Spurs: Nuno given timely financial boost

Tottenham Hotspur are about to be handed a timely financial boost, according to emerging reports.

It’s claimed that the North London outfit have sealed a new lucrative sponsorship deal that’ll help boost the coffers after dealing with the difficult repercussions of the pandemic over the past year.

The ever-reliable Alasdair Gold revealed the news on football.london earlier this week.

“football.london understands that Tottenham are set to boost their finances with a new training kit partner sponsorship deal, which is believed to have already been tied up and will see the new partner’s name visible on the Nike apparel,” he wrote.

Lilywhites chairman Daniel Levy stated that the club were expected to lose around £200m in revenue due to the lack of crowds and events at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which led to him taking out a £175m loan from the Bank of England.

That has since been paid off but it’s hard to imagine that they have regained much of the funds lost throughout the previous 12 months as fans aren’t expected back in the ground until the new season gets underway.

Therefore, any new finances will surely come as a huge bonus to Levy and the club.

It is the first time that Spurs have dipped their toes into this kind of sponsorship, even though it is prevalent right across the Premier League these days.

For instance, in 2018, Liverpool struck a four-year deal worth £20m-a-year with insurance provider AXA to sponsor their training kit. That relationship has since increased to include sponsorship of their new training base.

Similarly, Manchester United had American insurance giants AON on their training tops until May and that was thought to be a £120m deal across eight years.

Now Spurs are set to join the party, you can expect a little boost to the finances and that should leave Nuno Santo absolutely delighted as he looks to stamp his authority down in N17.

He and new sporting director Fabio Paratici could now get to work on potential arrivals in the transfer market, they’ll surely be working together at Hotspur Way knowing that they have a little more money to work with.

This is a great boost for for Levy, who’ll be buzzing to get some extra funds in the Spurs account after such a difficult 18 months.

AND in other news, Paratici should seal Spurs summer swoop for “excellent” beast admired by Lionel Messi…

Pundit not sure Hughes would start for Aston Villa - Exclusive

Aston Villa certainly don’t appear to be strapped for cash this summer even without selling Jack Grealish, and with the calibre of players they have been linked with already, former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey isn’t sure if Will Hughes would start under Dean Smith.

Hughes has spent three seasons in the Premier League with Watford in the past and he failed to ever set the league alight with his highest WhoScored rating in the top-flight being 6.74, not something that screams European football.

That is likely going to be the aim for Villa next season but with Hughes being linked with a move, he would surely only be good enough for a rotation or cup game role, something that would not make sense for either club or player.

After being an integral part of Watford’s side earning promotion back into the Premier League, it would be a bizarre move to see Hughes throw away first-team football for a spot on Villa’s bench, as he would be unlikely be a regular starter, according to Howey who spoke exclusively to Football FanCast:

“I think he’s a decent player but is he going to go in there and be in the starting XI? I’m not too sure given the players that are in and around their midfield.”

Hughes has always been a constant performer for Watford in both the Premier League and Championship and he appears settled but with just one year left on his contract, the Hornets may look to sell him on and generate some funds for this summer.

At the moment, Villa can boast options such as John McGinn and Douglas Luiz but if they manage to bring in James Ward-Prowse, there is surely no chance Hughes starts ahead of any of those options.

Sheff Wed consider Dennis Adeniran move

Sheffield Wednesday are considering making a summer move for Everton midfielder Dennis Adeniran, according to a new report.

The Lowdown: Moore looks for new signings

The Owls are preparing for life in League One, having not played in the third tier since 2011/12 season.

Darren Moore is still relatively new to the job and faces his first transfer window as manager, so will surely be looking to bring in a number of new faces who can adapt to both his style and a new league.

The Latest: Owls eye Adeniran move

According to The Sheffield Star, Wednesday are eyeing up a move for Adeniran, who is about to be without a club, due to his Everton deal expiring on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old spent last season on loan at fellow relegated Championship side Wycombe Wanderers, featuring in 21 league games and chipping in with one assist.

Moore’s influence is thought to be a key factor behind Adenrian potentially joining the Owls, with a number of Championship also believed to be interested.

The Verdict: Solid midfield acquisition

Wednesday need an injection of youth and vibrancy next season, with the team growing stagnant in recent years, as a core of established players grew older together.

At 22, Adeniran would certainly represent a youthful addition and he could provide energy and defensive quality in the middle of the park, having averaged 1.1 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game in the league last season with Wycombe.

He has played for England at Under-17, Under-18 and Under-19 level, highlighting his quality as a player, so he could be an exciting signing.

In other news, one Sheff Wed player is reportedly set to join a fellow League One club. Find out who it is here.

Colin Croft: There will never be another like Courtney Walsh

I believe that Courtney Walsh should stick to his guns, and ride off into retirement

Colin Croft26-Apr-2001I believe that Courtney Walsh should stick to his guns, and ride off into retirement. Why prolong the inevitable and even the agony? Enough is enough. As if to confirm this, Walsh has said two things that were somewhat pertinent.”I would like to finish my International cricket career at Sabina Park, my Jamaican home of cricket. It would be fitting if we can win that final game so that I could go out as I came in, on a victorious team.”
Courtney Walsh leaves the Test field for the final time
Photo © CricInfo
Both of these have now occurred. Walsh had a fine match figures of 6-93 in the final Test, and 25 wickets overall. The West Indies actually won the Test, so no problem there.”I would like to help the younger fast bowlers come through and take their places in this team, so that the tradition can be carried on in good hands.”In a way, that too has come to pass. I would also suggest that Courtney Walsh, especially in recent years, could not have done more to show younger fast bowlers how the art should be practised. At least Merve Dillon, by taking 20 wickets in the five Tests against South Africa, a tremendous improvement in production and maturity, has shown that he can step up and deliver. What he will now need is consistency.Cameron Cuffy, while diligent, will never be a world-beater. Nixon McLean is, in my mind, even worse off, since he is not even a fast bowler any longer. Simply, he has been around much too long not to have even learned the basic fundamentals of fast bowling, so it is very likely that he will just peter out and eventually fade away.Of the more recent fast bowlers in the Caribbean, Reon King, along with Cuffy, Dillon and McLean have been used, with sometimes Colin Stuart as the utility bowler. Since Marlon Black is no-where to be seen, due to that physical beating he took in Melbourne, the Leeward Island’s Kerry Jeremy could get a look in.Reon King still has to prove that he is really made of the stuff that is necessary to be a good fast bowler, since he seems to be perpetually injured. It is likely that he will get his chance again in Zimbabwe, while Stuart and Jeremy could well be on stand-by, if not indeed in the squad. It therefore confirms that there are personnel to fill the void, even though none have really shown, perhaps except Dillon against the South Africans, that they can do the business. However, prolonging Walsh’s career to Zimbabwe will make no sense at all. What purpose will it serve now? That final day of Walsh’s career was very sad, even though the West Indies had won the game, for they were losing their champion. It was ironic that when Marlon Samuels took the lofted catch to dismiss Paul Adams, completing the West Indies first Test win since June last year, and condemning the visitors to their first loss in 13 games, no-one paid any attention to him at all. Why should they? There were much more important things to do.Every player, even the operating bowler, Merve Dillon, were, by then, hugging Courtney Walsh with tremendous emotion, euphoria and appreciation. Even the younger ones, those who were just pups whenWalsh played his first Test in 1984, joined in the celebrations. From his 1st wicket, Australian Graham Wood in 1984, to his 435th, Henry Olonga, caught at forward short leg by Wavell Hinds; to his 500th, Jacques Kallis, LBW; to his last, Allan Donald, the ninth wicket in South Africa’s second innings, to give him his 519th Test wicket, in his 132nd and final Test; Courtney Walsh has been the ultimate professional, producing when it mattered most. What a performer; what a void he now leaves, but he has nothing more to prove. It is very difficult to contemplate, even imagine Courtney’s accomplishments, much less understand and appreciate them. At least, the numbers can tell some of the story.By the end of his final Test, his 132nd, more than any other West Indian cricketer, Walsh had bowled about 5,000 overs in Test cricket. That would mean, without counting any no-balls (and he would have hadmore than a few since his advent to Test cricket in 1984), that Walsh would have sent down no less than 30,000 legal deliveries in his almost 17 years of Test cricket.Allowing for a bowling approach/run-up of about 20 meters, simple mathematics would tell you that Courtney Walsh must have run about 600,000 meters, or 600 kilometres, at a good canter, bowling for the West Indies in Tests alone. There are many bicycles these days that never get that far without needing repair. To have a proper perspective of Walsh’s contribution to the cricketing world, one must also remember that Walsh has been bowling for Jamaica and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club as long as he has been playing for the West Indies. What kept this guy going is probably a miracle. Perhaps he could now bottle it and sell it, though determination and pride of performance can never be bottled or duplicated. One simply has to be born with the right attitude!Courtney Walsh replaced me directly in the West Indies cricket team, so I have a very special place in my heart for him. No one, especially Walsh himself, expected to last all of 17 years. He has carried on the best traditions of fast bowling, doing the right things to not only remain in the West Indies cricket team after all of these years, but to remain at the very top of the West Indian fast bowling tree, even after losing his best friend and fast bowling partner, Curtly Ambrose almost a year ago.An amazing statistic, I think, is that Walsh, after getting his 435th wicket to break Kapil Dev’s record, also at Sabina Park, in 2000, has taken 84 wickets over the last calendar year. Absolutely stunning!Given an honorary doctorate by the University of the West Indies for his services to cricket, feted and heralded everywhere around the Caribbean, I would suggest that we all would be much less well off with the end of his career. With some luck, he will put some of his experiences back into West Indies cricket’s future. From me, it is “Thank you, Cuddy”, personally and from everyone in West Indies cricket and the cricketing world at large. I would also say this. Anyone attempting to break his wicket record will be drop-dead tired if and when they do. There will never be another like Courtney Walsh.

Middlesex collapse after Shah's heroics

Owais Shah made the highest championship score at Durham’s Riverside ground before becoming a victim of Middlesex’s panic-stricken collapse in search of a fifth batting point. At 354 for three in the 118th over they still had 12 overs to reach 400. But 11 overs later they were all out for 386, with Shah sixth out for 190.In building so impressively on his seventh first-class hundred he added 50 to his own previous best, made against Yorkshire at Lord’s three years ago.Shah hit 18 fours and added three sixes once he had passed 150 before he swept his 330th ball to short fine leg as Michael Gough’s off-spin produced his first five-wicket haul in a spell of five for 12 in 29 balls. The previous highest Championship score on the ground was Michael Vaughan’s 177 in 1998, although Darryl Cullinan hit 200 not out for South Africa against Durham in the same season.Shah and Stephen Fleming put on 248 in 78 overs for the third wicket before Fleming fell for 114, clipping Nicky Phillips to square leg. There were ten balls left before the 130-over cut-off for bonus points when David Nash was last out, run out for 19.Durham had to bat for 18 overs in poor light and five warning lights were already shining when Gough was caught off bat and pad off Tufnell, prompting the umpires to call a halt 45 minutes early.

Bent backs Everton to sign Danny Ings

Marcus Bent believes Everton should sign Danny Ings to provide competition and back-up to Dominic Calvert-Lewin this summer.

Calvert-Lewin often ploughed a lone furrow up front for the Toffees in the 2020/21 season.

The England international scored 16 goals in 33 league outings and has subsequently been rewarded with a place in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the European Championships this summer.

But there is not much depth when it comes to out-and-out strikers at the club and Bent believes that a deal to sign Ings would improve the options available to boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Ings was first touted as an option by pundit Chris Sutton, when speaking to Radio 5 Live via the Liverpool Echo, and Bent believes he would be a superb, if expensive, acquisition.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a fine season at Southampton this term, scoring 13 goals in 33 outings in all competitions, and he would undoubtedly lighten the load on Calvert-Lewin next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, he said: “They definitely need to bring someone in, they’re talking about Ings. He’s 28.

“He’s not going to be a replacement for years, he’s not going to be at the club for years. He’s doing well at the minute.

“But talking to a couple of people at the club, he’d be a good buy, I wouldn’t say a cheap buy, but he’d be someone who would come in and probably play around DCL and he’d get his number of goals too, I think.”
