Defesa sólida é a chave do momento positivo do Corinthians no Brasileirão

Richardson backs timing of bowling crackdown

‘Majority against straightening of the arm’ – Richardson

The ICC’s chief executive David Richardson has defended the timing of the recent clampdown on illegal bowling actions, which has resulted in Saeed Ajmal and other spinners being suspended months before a World Cup. Ajmal’s loss could hamper Pakistan’s chances in the tournament but he is just one of a number of spinners to be banned in recent months.Sohag Gazi of Bangladesh, Prosper Utseya of Zimbabwe and Kane Williamson of New Zealand have all been reported and suspended since the June meeting of the ICC’s cricket committee, where recommendations were made for stronger scrutiny of bowling actions. But the timing of the action has been the subject of debate, given that it has come within nine months of the World Cup, which starts on February 14.”If we decide that there’s something wrong with the game, why should we wait until after a World Cup?” Richardson told reporters in Dubai. “I think we’d reached that straw that broke the camel’s back. There were just too many bowlers starting to emerge that people were starting to worry about.”I think it was simply that we said no, this is far enough. It’s arguable that we should have taken this kind of action earlier. That we can take on the chin.”Any of the bowlers already suspended can have their action re-tested if they believe they have corrected the flaws, meaning that Ajmal and the others could feasibly still bowl at the World Cup. However, he would still be at risk of being reported again during the World Cup, and at ICC events the usual rules requiring testing to take place within 21 days of being reported do not apply.Saeed Ajmal’s suspension in the run-up to the World Cup could affect Pakistan’s chances at the tournament•AFP”There’s a shortened testing time frame for ICC events,” Geoff Allardice, the ICC’s general manager of cricket, said. “A bowler needs to be tested within seven days. So pretty much, if you were reported in a World Cup for instance, you’d be straight off to the nearest testing facility, which we would have ready to go and the results would be fast-tracked.”The introduction of more testing centres – currently ICC-accredited testing can take place in Brisbane, Chennai, Cardiff or Loughborough – means the 21-day requirement might soon be reduced to 14 due to greater availability of venues. But what is not likely to change any time soon is the ICC’s wider approach to illegal actions, with the 15-degree rule seeming to be set in stone.A perceived imbalance in the contest between bat and ball has led to some commentators arguing that the doosra should be allowed in the same way that batting innovations such as the switch hit have been permitted. But Richardson said when such a move had been discussed at ICC level, the overwhelming sentiment was that the traditions of the game would be fundamentally dismantled if such leniency was written into the laws.”We had that debate. Should we change the law to allow bowlers to straighten their arm so that they can bowl the doosra and get it to spin the other way?” Richardson said. “There were some who argue that, but the majority say no, stick with the laws as we’ve always had them. If you want to promote unorthodoxy, there were people in the history of the game, Johnny Gleeson, for example, who learnt how to spin the ball using his fingers.”There are legitimate ways that you can do something special without actually changing the whole principle that you need to bowl with a straight arm. Hopefully we encourage unorthodox actions and deliveries, but within the laws. Even I could spin the ball when I threw it in the nets. I couldn’t when I bowled with a straight arm. So why make it easier to bowl for most bowlers? The guys who get the wickets must be the best bowlers.”Fifteen degrees was chosen as that is the point at which you will start to notice that someone is straightening his arm. We felt it’s unfair to suspend a bowler who might be straightening his arm by five or six degrees now because we’ve got the technology, whereas in the history of cricket such a bowler would have gone unnoticed.”The June meetings of the ICC’s cricket committee and chief executives’ committee has led to the current crackdown, but Richardson and Allardice said there were no directives from the ICC for certain bowlers to be tested. Instead, they said the key factor in the increased number of reports and suspensions was that umpires now felt they had more support on the issue.”Over the years, sometimes they felt like they were the ones being victimised for identifying bowlers with suspect actions,” Allardice said. “The other thing that they want is a testing process or testing results that match up with what their observations were on the field. They’re the two things that go together to giving them the confidence to express their views.”In recent times I think the support from the ICC and its member boards in this regard has been good. I think they [the umpires] are sensing that, and I think that’s why they’re more confident in expressing their concerns.”

Panthers and Lions make way into final

A round-up of the Haier T20 Cup matches played on September 27, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Sep-2014Fast bowler Imran Khan held his nerve in the final over of the match to restrict Sialkot Stallions to just five runs, as Peshawar Panthers won by six runs to make the final.Chasing 157, Stallions needed 12 off the last over, but Imran’s first two deliveries were dot balls. Immediately put on the back foot, Bilawal Bhatti swung around for a big shot, but could only manage a two. Bhatti and Shakeel Ansar exchanged singles with the next two balls, meaning that Bhatti had to hit the last ball for six to tie the game. However, he could only flick a slower ball away to fine leg for another single.Stallions had done well to recover from a shaky start that saw both Mukhtar Ahmed and Haris Sohail dismissed inside two overs. Shahid Yousuf led a counterattack by striking a 35-ball 56 and adding 80 for the third wicket with Mansoor Amjad. However three quick wickets inside five overs, including that of Yousuf’s, hampered Stallions’ momentum and the lower-order batsmen could not produce the desired acceleration to guide the team home.Panthers, having been inserted, had made 156 for 7 from their 20 overs. Their innings was built around crucial knocks from Rafatullah Mohmand (35), Adil Amin (34) and Zohaib Khan (30), which kept the team ticking at more than seven an over. Zohaib later capped off a fine all-round display by picking up two crucial wickets to dent Stallions’ chase. With all his bowling partners coming out with expensive figures, seamer Hasan Ali stood out for Stallions and finished with figures of 4-0-21-2.A four-wicket burst from left-arm pacer Mohammad Aftab meant it will be Lahore Lions who take on Panthers in the final on Sunday. He knocked the top off the Multan Tigers’ batting, to put his team on their way to a nine-run win, on the same day the other Lahore Lions team enjoyed success at the Champions League T20.Aftab claimed four of the top five Tigers’ batsmen to reduce them to 35 for 4 in a steep chase of 180. While a couple of partnerships of 40-something followed, the damage done at the top was enough to hold off Tigers. Rizwan Haider with 42 off 25 and Naved Yasin with a more sedate 39 off 31 were the biggest contributors for Tigers.Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan had jolted Lions in the very first over, earlier on, getting Abid Ali for a duck. However half-centuries from Kamran Akmal and Imam-ul-Haq made sure the innings stayed on track. The pair added 114 in 11 overs, with Akmal top scoring with 77 off 43. His innings included 11 fours and three sixes, and set Lions on their way to 179 for 7, which proved to be enough in the end.

No Paulistão sub-20, São Paulo empata e deixa escapar liderança

Agarkar: Sunrisers’ Indian batsmen have to chip in

Match facts Tuesday, April 22, 2014
Start time 1830 local (1430 GMT, 2000 IST)Big PictureWho will stop Kings XI Punjab? They chased 200-plus against Chennai Super Kings, then they hunted down 190-plus against Rajasthan Royals. And they did so with more than an over to spare both times. It has been basically the duo of Glenn Maxwell and David Miller who have done the damage; the others have either largely not clicked or have not been needed. They can’t keep on delivering at such levels every time, and soon, the rest of the Punjab batting will be tested, if their bowlers continue to go for so many.Sunrisers Hyderabad’s attack – Dale Steyn, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Amit Mishra, Karn Sharma, Darren Sammy – has the potential to test them more than their previous two opponents did. This group of bowlers set up several wins for their side last season in their run to the playoffs. However, even Sunrisers’ attack could find it tough in Sharjah. The pitch for the Kings XI-Royals match was a belter without any help for the bowlers. While Kings XI have plenty of firepower all across their middle order in the form of Maxwell, Miller and captain George Bailey, Sunrisers’ batting appears lopsided, with most of the strength concentrated at the top in Aaron Finch, David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan.Watch out forGlenn Maxwell’s scores so far have been 95 off 43 and 89 off 45. After being named Man of the Match against Royals, he said he had left the job “half finished” and should have taken his team to the finish himself. He may overwhelmingly favour the square leg/midwicket region against spin, but he showed another facet of his game against Royals. With Dhawal Kulkarni bowling on the stumps to a leg-side field and no sweeper on the off, Maxwell opened the face to pick up boundaries through cover.Amit Mishra has made legspin a wicket-taking asset in T20 without reducing it to quick-and-flat stuff. He lured several batsmen to their fall with big tossed up legbreaks in the recent World T20. He will be up against a man whose principal way of dealing with spinners is to slog-sweep them out of sight.Stats and trivia Glenn Maxwell’s strike-rate of 160.34 is the second-highest among batsmen who have made at least 1000 career T20 runs At 6.78, Amit Mishra’s economy-rate is the worst for spinners with 150 or more career T20 wickets

Zaheer, Nayar return to boost Mumbai

Mumbai will be boosted by the return of Zaheer Khan and Abhishek Nayar for their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Maharashtra at the Wankhede Stadium from January 8 to 12

Amol Karhadkar03-Jan-2014Zol lift for Maharashtra

Vijay Zol, the India Under-19 captain who scored a hundred in the U-19 Asia Cup final against Pakistan, will return to Maharashtra’s Ranji Trophy squad for the quarter-final against Mumbai, to be played at the Wankhede Stadium from January 8 to 12. Zol had missed Maharashtra’s last two Group C games due to the Asia Cup and the preceding preparatory camp for the tournament.
Squad: Rohit Motwani (capt & wk), Harshad Khadiwale, Chirag Khurana, Kedar Jadhav, Sangram Atitkar, Ankit Bawne, Anupam Sanklecha, Akshay Darekar, Pushkaraj Chavan, Samad Fallah, Shrikant Mundhe, Domnic Joseph Muthuswamy, Vijay Zol, Jay Pande, Shamsuzama Kazi.

Uthappa returns for Karnataka

Karnataka batsman Robin Uthappa is back in the squad for the quarter-final clash against Uttar Pradesh in Bangalore from January 8 to 12. Uthappa, who had played only two games before suffering a hamstring injury, replaces Mayank Agarwal. Left-arm spinner KP Appanna, who missed the previous match against Delhi, too returns while the allrounder Stuart Binny will miss the remainder of the season after being picked in the India ODI squad for New Zealand.
Squad: R Vinay Kumar (capt), CM Gautham (wk), Robin Uthappa, KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Karun Nair, R Samarth, Shreyas Gopal, Ronit More, Abhimanyu Mithun, HS Sharath, Abrar Kazi, Ganesh Satish, Amit Verma, KP Appanna

Mumbai will be boosted by the return of Zaheer Khan and Abhishek Nayar for their Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Maharashtra at the Wankhede Stadium from January 8 to 12.Zaheer, who led the team for the first four Group A games, was recalled to India’s Test squad in South Africa and thus missed the last four group games. Nayar had been unavailable due to a left hip injury since he replaced Zaheer as captain for the game against Jharkhand.Wasim Jaffer, who had been in charge of the team for the last three games, will hand over the captaincy to Zaheer. In the first four games of the season, Mumbai had picked up 19 points, including three wins. However, with Zaheer, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane unavailable due to national duty and Nayar and the seamer Dhawal Kulkarni injured, the defending champions were struggling to qualify for the knockouts.Kulkarni, whose foot injury was detected hours after he was selected for India’s ODI series against West Indies in November, will take at least a week to return to action. “He has started doing some fitness drills and we are hoping that he would be available for the next round,” said Nitin Dalal, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) joint secretary.Despite Zaheer and Nayar’s return, the team management still have a lot to ponder over their combination ahead of the Maharashtra derby. The batsman Siddhesh Lad, who had a slipped disc on the eve of Mumbai’s crucial game against Gujarat in Valsad, is likely to be ruled out. Two other batsmen, Hiken Shah and D Subramanian, who had suffered hand injuries while fielding in Valsad, will miss the quarter-final.”Hiken split his webbing and Subbu [Subramanian] has a fractured thumb, thus ruling them out for this round,” Dalal said.As a result, the squad for the quarter-final will see five changes from the one that travelled to Valsad. Manish Rao (who had replaced Lad), Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Shah, Subramanian and Pravin Tambe have made way for Zaheer, Nayar, Vinit Indulkar, Sarvesh Damle and Nikhil Patil (Jr).Squad: Zaheer Khan (capt), Wasim Jaffer, Abhishek Nayar, Aditya Tare (wk), Kaustubh Pawar, Suryakumar Yadav, Vishal Dabholkar, Javed Khan, Shardul Thakur, Iqbal Abdulla, Sagar Kerkar, Vinit Indulkar, Nikhil Patil (Jr), Sarvesh Damle, Saurabh Netravalkar

Amla, Steyn return to South Africa's T20 squad

Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn have been named in South Africa’s T20 squad for the two-match series against Pakistan in the UAE next month. Batsman Farhaan Behardien and the seamer Rory Kleinveldt were the two players left out of the T20 squad that toured Sri Lanka in July.Amla last played a T20 in December 2012. He relinquished the limited-overs vice-captaincy in February when South Africa announced separate captains for all three formats. He had asked not to be picked for T20s in 2013, but it appears as if he is willing to commit to the shortest format. He is the third opening batsman in the squad, with Henry Davids and Quinton de Kock in the mix.”Hashim is a world-class player across all the formats,” said Cricket South Africa (CSA) selection convener Andrew Hudson. “His experience and stability at the top of the order are qualities that we believe will strengthen the squad in a key area.”Steyn last played in the World T20 in Sri Lanka in 2012. With the next edition of the tournament in March-April in Bangladesh, the coach Russell Domingo had made it clear that players had to be part of the squad regularly if they wanted to be picked for tournaments. Steyn took part in the Champions League in India for Sunrisers Hyderabad.”It is great to have Dale back as it means we now have all our senior players available again,” Hudson said. “There was also some encouraging form shown at the Champions League T20, notably by Henry Davids, who was unquestionably the batsman of the tournament until the Titans were knocked out.”The allrounder Chris Morris was not named in any of the limited-overs squads for the tour. South Africa play the two T20s in Dubai after the two Tests and five ODIs.Squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Hashim Amla, Henry Davids, Quinton de Kock, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir, Ryan McLaren, David Miller, Morne Morkel, Wayne Parnell, Aaron Phangiso, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, David Wiese
