This season's Rashford: Man Utd talent looks "increasingly likely" to leave

Manchester United’s business in the transfer market in the summer of 2025 will potentially be remembered as one of their best windows in recent history.

Ruben Amorim has spent around £200m on new additions within his front three, with such additions already making an immediate impact at Old Trafford.

Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko were the three signings made by the hierarchy, with the latter being the most expensive at a staggering £74m including add-ons.

The trio have already had a say in nine of their 15 Premier League goals in 2025/26 to date, as Mbeumo sits top of the Red Devils’ goalscoring charts with his total of four goals in nine outings.

Such form has led to serious doubt being cast over the futures of numerous players already within Amorim’s ranks, which could lead to numerous exits during the upcoming January window.

Players who look set to leave Man Utd in January

Over the last couple of days, rumours have been swirling over the future of multiple players, with midfielder Manuel Ugarte just one United player who could be edging closer to the exit door.

The Uruguayan international joined in a £50m transfer from PSG last summer, which led to huge expectations being placed on his shoulders to end their hunt for a new ball-winning option.

However, the 24-year-old has fallen down Amorim’s pecking order, only starting two league outings in 2025/26, leading to rumours over a winter move to join Turkish outfit Galatasaray.

He’s not the only player who appears to be moving closer to the exit door, with forward Joshua Zirkzee another Red Devil who has struggled to nail his starting role down this season.

According to CaughtOffside, the Dutchman is now “increasingly likely” to depart Old Trafford after featuring for just 82 minutes this season – only a year on from his £36m transfer to join the club.

The report states that the 24-year-old will allow the former Bologna talisman to depart in the coming months, but will be looking to recruit the majority of their investment back.

It also confirms that the player himself wants to depart to gain valuable first-team minutes to help improve his standing in the national setup ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

However, such a decision could come with a risk, especially given the examples that have unfolded in front of Amorim’s eyes over the last couple of months.

The United star who could become this season’s Rashford

Before Amorim’s arrival at United, attacker Marcus Rashford was seen as a key member of the first-team squad, arguably being one of the most threatening options within the final third.

The England international has racked up 138 goals for the Red Devils during his nine years in the first-team, but it rapidly became apparent the 40-year-old wasn’t keen on the academy graduate.

Despite starting and scoring in the manager’s first game at Ipswich Town, the 27-year-old was excluded from first-team training – subsequently joining Aston Villa on loan for the second half of 2024/25.

Rashford registered four goals and five assists in his 17 appearances before linking up with Spanish giants Barcelona during the recent window – once again producing the goods away from Old Trafford.

He’s already notched 10 combined goals and assists in his 13 appearances, with such a decision arguably one of Amorim’s worst during his near 12-month tenure with the Red Devils.

However, he could be about to make another huge mistake in sanctioning Zirkzee’s exit, especially if the Dutchman can replicate such form before his move to England.

The 24-year-old scored 12 times and registered six assists in his 37 appearances prior to his switch to Old Trafford – even managing to impress in glimpses last campaign.

Zirkzee scored twice in Amorim’s second game in charge of the club back in December 2024, with his contributions in the clash with Everton just one example of the talent he possesses in the final third.

Other outings against Lyon and Real Sociedad in the Europa League showcased his ability to provide the goods in key moments – subsequently helping the Red Devils reach yet another European final.

Whilst it still remains unclear what the attacker’s best position is, even describing himself as a 9.5, he still managed to rank highly in numerous areas during the club’s dismal 2024/25 season.

Zirkzee ranked in the 82nd percentile for possession regained in the final third, whilst also completing the most passes per 90 of any forward in the first-team ranks.

Such numbers showcase his tireless effort out of possession, before firing the killer pass to a teammate – subsequently allowing him to pick up two assists across all competitions.

There’s no doubt his tally of five goals in 49 appearances was way below the expectations of the supporters, but Zirkzee desperately needs to be cut some slack by the manager.

Such a year was his first in England’s top-flight, but it’s evident that the manager has made up his mind with the forward, as seen by his tally of 82 league minutes in 2025/26.

Allowing him to leave could once again come back to bite them, potentially following the same route as Rashford and thriving in Europe after departing the Red Devils.

Billionaire takeover candidate makes Sheffield Wednesday decision as deadline nears

A billionaire candidate who looked at buying the club has reportedly made his decision on completing a takeover of Sheffield Wednesday, as their initial deadline nears.

Sheffield Wednesday near initial deadline

Whether it was optimistic or not, Sheffield Wednesday’s co-administrator Kris Wigfield initially set a soft deadline of December 5 to find a preferred bidder for the club. That is just one day away, however, and it seems unlikely that the Owls will have their answer in the next 24 hours.

Instead, it’s been a frustrating week. The club has been dealt an additional six-point deduction thanks to the lingering consequences of Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership and must already turn their focus towards Championship relegation and a campaign in League One next season.

After a decision that only adds salt to their wounds, Wednesday will hope to see some progression regarding their takeover sooner rather than later.

On that front, several rumours have emerged about a number of interested candidates and one report even claimed earlier this week that some parties may choose to put a joint bid together.

It would be quite the move to match the Owls’ £30m valuation, but whether that move is deemed acceptable by Begbies Traynor remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, reports have also claimed that Mike Ashley has already seen one offer rejected for the club, having fallen below Sheffield Wednesday’s valuation. The former Newcastle United owner is one of interested candidates, albeit one who is yet to match other bidders.

However, the same can’t be said for Anders Holch Povlsen, who has dealt those at Hillsborough a frustrating blow with his latest verdict on buying the club.

Povlsen makes Sheffield Wednesday takeover decision

According to Danish outlet Tipsbladet, as relayed by The Star, Povlsen is not among the final candidates to buy Sheffield Wednesday. The Dane may have taken a look at the club, but has decided against putting his name in the hat ahead of the Owls’ crucial decision.

For those at Hillsborough, his interest would certainly have been welcomed. Povlsen already owns Midtjylland and a Forbes profile claimed his estimated networth was $11.3 billion (£8bn) in 2022.

The 53-year-old inherited a majority stake in ASOS and is reported to be the largest individual private landowner in the UK thanks to his land in the Scottish Highlands. So, to say that money is not an issue would be a major understatement.

Alas, it’s not just his money that made Povlsen an attractive takeover candidate before he decided against a move. The Dane also ticks the box for experience in the world of football – something other rumoured candidates do not have. In many ways, he was the ideal man for the job, but Wednesday must now look elsewhere.

Astros GM Admits Yordan Alvarez Should've Rested Hand More to Avoid Further Injury

Yordan Alvarez was expected to return to the Houston Astros' lineup soon after he landed on the injured list back on May 2 with a right hand strain. However, further imaging showed that the team's designated hitter suffered a "very small" right hand fracture.

Now Alvarez will miss more time, and his return date is still unknown. In hindsight, Astros general manager Dana Brown wishes Alvarez would've rested his hand more before getting him back to hitting.

“I think the big point here is when he had the first injury, in terms of the muscle strain in the hand, maybe we shouldn’t have let him fight through that," Brown said on Sports Talk 790, per Astros beat reporter Brian McTaggart. "He said it wasn’t the normal pain that he usually gets in his hand, so he thought maybe he could grind through it and it was just soreness. Maybe at that point we probably should have shut him down, maybe for a week, giving it a chance to heal and not let him try to fight through it and potentially cause more damage.”

Alvarez shared a similar message on Saturday, stating that taking batting practice caused his hand to halt its healing. He said he needs to be resting the hand now in order to get back in the lineup.

Before landing on the IL, the three-time All-Star was averaging .210/.306/.340 with three home runs and 18 RBIs in 29 games.

Man Utd join race to sign "underrated" Arsenal target in bargain Baleba alternative

Hoping to get one over on their rivals, Manchester United have now reportedly joined Arsenal in the race to sign Quinten Timber, whose contract is set to expire next summer.

Ruben Amorim’s midfield has been a topic of discussion ever since his arrival. The Portuguese manager revived Casemiro from a player destined to leave to an invaluable part of his side, but that has also come at a cost for Kobbie Mainoo. In an attempt to find balance, the academy graduate has struggled to get into the side.

As things stand, it looks like Casemiro and captain Bruno Fernandes will occupy the two deeper midfield roles in Amorim’s system when everyone is available for United. But there does lie one problem.

Casemiro is 33 years old and can’t go on forever, no matter how much his form has been revived. And with Manuel Ugarte still unable to find his feet at Old Trafford, Man United could do with a long-term solution.

Now worth more than Anderson: Man Utd star is the "nearest thing" to Zidane

Manchester United have hit the jackpot on a star who’s worth more than Elliot Anderson.

ByEthan Lamb Nov 14, 2025

Rumours centred around Carlos Baleba in the summer as the Red Devils attempted to do exactly that, before the midfielder stayed put at Brighton & Hove Albion, and it’s clearly something that INEOS are looking to address.

It seems as though the Brighton man remains a target, but he’s now not the only one on United’s shortlist. Atlético Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, another name on the shortlist, is now reportedly open to an Old Trafford switch, whilst INEOS could yet land an alternative bargain deal to end their problems once and for all.

Man Utd join Quinten Timber race

According to Caught Offside, Man United have now joined the race to sign Timber and could yet jump ahead of Arsenal in pursuit of his signature.

The Gunners already have Quinten’s twin brother, Jurrien, in their ranks but may be forced to watch on as the two siblings do battle rather than unite in the Premier League next year.

There’s little chance that those at Old Trafford will be priced out of a move for the 25-year-old, too, as was the case with Baleba in the summer. The Dutch midfielder is set to become a free agent at the end of his current Feyenoord deal in June — handing Arsenal and Man United the chance to land a bargain deal.

Dubbed “underrated” by U23 scout Antonio Mango last year, Timber is also attracting interest from Borussia Dortmund, who are leading the race for his signature. Both Man United and Arsenal must first fend off competition from the Bundesliga giants before doing battle themselves next summer.

Announcer Brian Anderson's Call of Guardians' Game-Tying Homer Was Absolutely Electric

Thursday night's ALCS Game 3 between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians got incredibly exciting in the late innings. The visiting pinstripes went back-to-back thanks to Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton in the eighth to take the lead, entering the bottom of the ninth up 5–3.

The Guardians were teetering on the verge of a borderline insurmountable 3–0 deficit but still managed to get a man on second with two outs. Then Jhokensy Noel, the slugger known as Big Christmas, came up to the plate and crushed a two-run home run to tie it all up.

It was an amazing moment and play-by-play announcer Brian Anderson absolutley nailed the call for TNT. As soon as Noel made contact Anderson and his cohorts in the broadcast booth were reduced to excited shouts for a few seconds. Then Anderson's instincts took over and he delivered the call of the playoffs so far: "BIG CHRISTMAS HAS TIED IT! THE ULTIMATE PRESENT UNDER THE TREE!"

Such an epic moment is only compounded by a great call and Anderson killed it here.

What a homer. What a call.

Not just Hojlund: Man Utd must rue selling a CF who's outperforming Mbeumo

Manchester United forked out huge funds over the summer transfer window to try and hand Ruben Amorim the talent he needs to transform the first team squad.

The majority of his £200m spending was directed to the front line of the squad, with Bryan Mbeumo one of the additions made from fellow Premier League side Brentford.

The Cameroonian international cost a fee in the region of £71m during the off-season, undoubtedly generating huge excitement after scoring 20 league goals for the Bees last campaign.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

In his first handful of outings for the Red Devils, the 26-year-old has only found the key on two separate occasions, only one of which has come in England’s top flight.

However, he was brought in to provide the goods within the final third, with one player on their books sacrificed and allowed to depart Old Trafford after the big-money transfer.

Rasmus Hojlund’s form after joining Napoli this summer

After scoring just four league goals last season, striker Rasmus Hojlund was given the green light to move on loan to Napoli with an obligation to buy this summer in an attempt to get his career back on track.

The Dane was once seen as United’s saviour in attacking areas, just like Mbeumo is this summer, but his £72m transfer was ultimately a failed one, with the 22-year-old unable to produce the goods.

However, since moving to Naples, the youngster has made an immediate impact under Antonio Conte, scoring on his debut for the club in the meeting with Fiorentina.

Hojlund has since impressed further, this time in the Champions League, scoring twice against Sporting CP on Wednesday night, subsequently securing their first European win of the campaign.

It’s early days in his latest stint in Italy, but the centre-forward has already hit the ground running, averaging a goal every 128 minutes for the defending Serie A champions.

Should he continue such form, there’s no doubt the Red Devils will regret sanctioning his exit, just as they’re currently experiencing with another former talent who is thriving in front of goal.

The former United star who’s outperforming Mbeumo

Given the nature of the change for Mbeumo, he will certainly need time to adapt to Amorim’s system, especially given he’s operating in a rather unfamiliar role.

The 26-year-old mainly featured in a wide right role in a 4-3-3 system under Thomas Frank last year, but has been utilised in a central position in a 3-4-2-1 formation at Old Trafford.

An ounce of leniency should be directed to the Cameroonian despite his lack of impact to date, with real hope that he can hit the ground running in the months ahead.

However, the price tag will have no doubt ramped up the pressure on the attacker to deliver, especially after numerous players before him tried and failed to fill the void.

One of whom was Danny Welbeck, with the academy graduate rising through the youth ranks before making a name for himself in the first-team squad at Old Trafford.

He spent seven years at the Theatre of Dreams at senior level between 2007 and 2014, racking up 142 appearances for the first-team and finding the back of the net on 29 occasions.

The now 34-year-old was undoubtedly sold prematurely, joining Arsenal in a £16m deal in the summer of 2014 – even netting against the Red Devils in one of his visits back to Old Trafford with the Gunners.

11 years on from his departure from his boyhood club, Welbeck is now plying his trade for fellow Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, subsequently racking up over 150 appearances in the last five years.

Last campaign was his best-ever in the Premier League, netting ten goals and reaching double figures for the first time as Fabian Hurzeler’s side ended the year just outside the European places.

The forward, who’s been dubbed “incredible” by journalist Ryan Adsett, has already registered two goals and one assist in all competitions – subsequently posting a higher tally than Mbeumo (2) to date.

He netted a double off the substitutes bench against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this weekend, further highlighting his ability to find the net in key moments despite entering the final years of his professional career.

Given his goalscoring record and ability to outperform United’s big-money signing, there’s no denying that the hierarchy made a mistake in approving his departure from the club over a decade ago.

He may not be the most glamorous of strikers, but it’s clear he has a nouse for the back of the net – something which the first team has greatly lacked over the last couple of years.

Americans Abroad: In-form Folarin Balogun continues scoring streak, Tim Weah and Marseille go top, but injuries temper mood

GOAL reviews the major takeaways from Americans playing in Europe, including yet another goal from the Monaco striker

The return to club soccer after an international break is always a bit strange. There's a sense of relief for the casual fan, but a lack of fluidity in the actual product. Games sometimes seem jetlagged.

It can be challenging for U.S. internationals, who typically have to fly back across continents to play for their clubs. Some can look half awake.

But not Folarin Balogun, who was excellent for the USMNT in recent friendlies and recaptured the same form for his club. Tim Weah was less effective in a U.S. jersey, but has been instrumental in Marseille's unlikely march to the top of Ligue 1. Tyler Adams, too, looked tidy in what was a frenetic game.

And even if Christian Pulisic is out, nursing a low-grade hamstring injury, Mauricio Pochettino can still take heart from a number of solid showings from the types of players who will be looking to make their case for a USMNT spot at the World Cup.

GOAL looks at the major takeaways from this weekend's Americans Abroad.

  • Getty Images

    Balogun's big break

For some players and clubs, the international break can be the source of injuries or halted momentum. You can ask AC Milan how they feel about international soccer, if you want that point of view.

For others, though, it's a chance to build momentum. That's the camp that Folarin Balogun and Monaco will find themselves in.

After scoring for the USMNT against a very good Ecuador team during the international break, Balogun returned to Ligue 1 and found himself another, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Angers on Saturday. It was a fantastic finish, as he held off a defender after a perfect ball in from Takumi Minamino. Balogun, who entered the game as a substitute, buried it.

This could be big for Balogun. For several years now, he's been waiting to build some kind of momentum with Monaco, only to see it slowed by a variety of circumstances. Last season's injury derailed him. This campaign, then, is about putting that behind him.

After scoring twice for the USMNT in as many international breaks, Balogun has an opporunity. With a new coach at Monaco and some newfound confidence, perhaps this will be Balogun's big breakout.

Weah and Marseille lead Ligue 1

Ligue 1 is generally Paris Saint-Germain's playground, and the expectation was – and probably still is – that this season would be more of the same. They won the Champions League last season, after all, and the young squad that got them there is returning with even more experience to dominate.

Don't look now, though, but there's another team on top after eight weeks, and it features an American.

Following PSG's 3-3 draw with Strasbourg on Friday, Tim Weah and Marseille went top of the table on Saturday, and they did it in style, bashing 10-man Le Havre, 6-2, at home. Saturday was mostly the Mason Greenwood show, as the former Manchester United winger scored four of the six in the win.

Weah came off the bench in the 72nd minute, getting 16 touches of the ball as Marseille pushed for more. Weah, generally, has been a starter for Marseille, including big matches against Real Madrid and PSG in September. During the break, he started both matches for the USMNT, featuring as either a wingback – or a "fake wingback" depending on who you ask.

The question is, can Weah and Marseille keep hanging around the top of the table in defiance of PSG?

  • Getty Images Sport

    USMNT's Richards and Adams duel

You won't see many games involving Chris Richards or Tyler Adams end in 3-3 draws. Saturday was just that chaotic, though, as Richards and Adams could only watch as their two clubs basically played a game of basketball against one another.

Adams and Bournemouth took a 2-0 lead in the first half behind Eli Junior Kroupi's brace, only to see Palace fight back in the second. Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a second-half hat-trick, including a 97th-minute equalizer, to cancel out what appeared to be an 89th-minute winner from Ryan Christie.

It was, by a large margin, the most chaotic game of the weekend, and both Americans played 90 minutes.

They won't feel it's a good 90, mind you. With both generally more focused on the defensive side of the ball, neither Richards nor Adams will be particularly thrilled with their side engaging in a back-and-forth shootout. Both, though, will be happy to get a point out of it.

At the very least, it was a fun one for those watching those two USMNT mainstays face off.

    USMNT injuries dampen the mood

There were a few concerns, though. International breaks tend to be hard on the legs, and there was no difference here. The October window treated the U.S. pretty well: a win and a draw against two Would Cup-qualified sides. What will be an irritant to some club sides, though, is the fact that a few returned to their teams not fully fit.

Pulisic has a hamstring issue. And now there are concerns for both Antonee Robinson and Malik Tillman. Robinson has dealt with bumps and bruises for nearly six months now, and missed the Cottagers' game with Arsenal due to a minor knock.

Tillman has a thigh issue and could potentially miss several weeks. It's uncertain as to whether any of the three will be available for the USMNT's November friendlies.

I'm going to have that weight' – Matheus Cunha admits there is 'confusion' around his playing style after being brought to Man Utd to score goals

Manchester United star Matheus Cunha admits that he has to carry the "weight" of being a goalscorer at Manchester United, although he admits there is some "confusion" over how he plays. The Brazil international joined the club in the summer for a fee of £62.5 million ($83m) and has yet to catch fire at Old Trafford.

Cunha a big-money signing

Cunha may have joined United for a major fee in the summer but he has yet to score his first goal for the club, despite making six Premier League appearances. He has now claimed that he is not actually a traditional centre-forward, although there is a "stereotype" that follows him leading people to assume he is a natural No.9. Last season, at Wolves, the Brazilian scored 15 league goals, having netted 12 the season prior. Before that, he had only hit double-figures once in his career, and Cunha says he is actually more of a midfielder.

Speaking to Globo, he said: "I think that because I play for Manchester [United] and people follow me more on the pitch, they understand better how I play. I think it's part of having that weight, which is a privilege. It's a weight that came after the Tokyo Olympics [for Brazil in 2021]. And if it means having that weight and becoming a champion, I think it's worth putting up with a little bit of confusion about where [I] play."

At the Olympics that year, Brazil won the Gold medal, beating Spain in the final; Cunha, then on the cusp of joining Atletico Madrid, scored against Saudi Arabia, Egypt and La Roja.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesCunha claims midfield position was 'eliminated'

Cunha admits that he always played as a midfielder, before 'encountering' a 4-3-3 formation when he became a professional.

He added: "I came to the national team with this stereotype of a number 9 shirt. I play my entire base as a midfielder, and when I became a professional, I encountered this world of 4-3-3. It seems like you have to adapt: either play centre-forward, winger, or 'eight'.

"They eliminated the midfielder position, and you have to adapt. But I see it positively, as it has given me experience, many more positions, and even more so in short-term tournaments with the national team. Having a versatile player is a huge help for any coach."

Cunha enjoying personal life

Cunha admits that while he has not enjoyed a prolific start to life at United, he has found personal satisfaction, as he is playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, and has also become a starter for Brazil.

He added: "What I was searching for as a person more than anything else, I'm slowly finding. You constantly want to improve; that's innate in human nature, but I can't help but stop and enjoy this moment.

"Feeling privileged to wear the jersey of the greatest national team in the world, one of the greatest clubs in the world…it's a spectacular personal moment. I have an incredible family, another little girl now, everyone is doing well and healthy. I'm enjoying all of this in a positive way."

(C)Getty ImagesWhat comes next?

United are currently 10th in the Premier League table and face Liverpool after the international break as they attempt to return to form. Cunha will hope to make a real impact against the Reds, as he is still awaiting his coming-out performance for the club after his move from Wolves.

He added: "Being here now with the national team, at United, is, without a doubt, a different level, a different moment as a player. I'm trying as much as possible to adapt, to learn… It's only been two months, but it feels like I've been here for a long time because of the club's current situation, because I have to deliver results as quickly as possible, because I'm a new signing… All of this helps me adapt more quickly and feel my best with the national team."
