Sunderland "waiting" on striker signings

A claim has emerged on Sunderland and their plans for the remainder of the summer transfer window…

What’s the talk?

Journalist Alan Nixon has claimed that the Black Cats are eyeing up deals to improve their attack ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

The reporter has revealed that the club may bring in more than one striker to improve Alex Neil’s squad before the end of August.

He Tweeted:

“Working on a (new) keeper and waiting on a striker (or two)…”

Supporters will be excited

Supporters will be excited by this as half of Nixon’s claim has already been proven to be accurate as the Black Cats announced the signing of goalkeeper Alex Bass from Portsmouth on Tuesday night.

The 24-year-old spent time on loan at Bradford City in League Two last term and enjoyed an impressive spell as he averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.94 in 21 appearances.

He has joined to put the pressure on Anthony Patterson between the sticks and help to avoid any complacency from the number one in the Championship.

Striker Ellis Simms is also reportedly closing in on a loan move to the Stadium of Light from Premier League side Everton. The attacker scored five goals in 11 starts in the Premiership for Hearts last term and managed 10 goals in 19 League One outings the year before that.

He has proven that he has the quality in front of goal to make a big impact and fans will surely be excited to see him arrive at Sunderland. The gem has the potential to be a big player for Neil next season, if the deal gets over the line, and supporters can look forward to him banging in the goals in the Championship.

Fans will also be excited because two parts of Nixon’s claim have seemingly come to pass and the prospect of another number nine coming in appears to be a real possibility.

With over a month left to run in the window, Sunderland have plenty of time left ahead of them to get deals done to improve the team. Although, the Championship campaign kicks off this weekend and having as many of their targets in the door as possible should be a priority in order to have a settled XI/squad.

Supporters will now be excited to see who the club are hoping to bring in alongside Simms in the forward department and will be keeping their eyes peeled in the days and weeks to come.

Alan Myers drops Everton transfer claim

Everton have been linked with numerous players this summer but have only made one signing so far, although a reliable source has now made a big transfer claim on two potential targets for the Toffees.

What’s the latest?

News editor and former Everton communications director Alan Myers has been responding to supporters’ questions about the current transfer situation at Goodison Park.

He dropped a 10-word transfer claim on Twitter in response to a question about the rumours of a speculated move for Adama Traore this summer, saying: “Not sure about Traore, wouldn’t rule out MGW coming in”

Supporters will be buzzing

There is no doubt that Everton supporters will be buzzing that it looks likely that the club are still working on bringing in new additions, considering the disastrous season they had to endure last time around as the Toffees finished on their joint-lowest points tally ever.

Frank Lampard hasn’t had the easiest managerial career after being sacked from Chelsea, but one area in which he has excelled since swapping playing for management is the nurturing of young players.

It hasn’t been an easy ride for the Goodison Park faithful over the last few years, with a high turnover of managers; and despite their constant spending, they haven’t been able to build a team worthy of competing near the top, so the fans must be hoping that new additions this summer can make a genuinely positive impact.

Signing Morgan Gibbs-White could be the perfect opportunity for legendary Premier League midfielder Lampard to unlock the potential of the player, just like he did with Mason Mount, Armando Broja and Reece James at Chelsea, to name but a few of the talents that the 44-year-old had a hand in developing.

The 22-year-old Wolves gem scored 11 goals and delivered nine assists from his midfield role whilst on a season-long loan with Sheffield United last term, excelling in a position in which Lampard thrived during his playing days, so the Everton boss could really offer his experience and knowledge to the young talent to get the best out of him.

Farhad Moshiri must do his best to keep the Goodison Park faithful and the manager happy going into the new season and there is still plenty of work to be done to improve the team ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

West Ham: Romano shares Broja update

West Ham United are believed to be edging ever closer to landing Chelsea youngster, Armando Broja…

What’s the word?

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Hammers are nearing an agreement with the Albanian striker regarding personal terms, while discussions are also said to be “ongoing” with the Blues.

Writing on Twitter about the 20-year-old, the respected insider stated: “Armando Broja will clarify his future very soon. West Ham are really close to reaching an agreement with Broja on personal terms, talks ongoing with Chelsea.

“There are many clubs interested – Chelsea, on it. Broja’s on his way back to England as @AdamNewson reports.”

Romano put out a later update, sharing the following: “Details of the official bid submitted by West Ham for Broja: £30m total fee. Waiting for Chelsea answer, then buy back/future sale percentage will be discussed.”

As Romano hinted at above, the 14-cap gem has left his current side’s tour of the United States in order to return to England to get a deal over the line, having only belatedly joined up with Thomas Tuchel’s squad in the first place due to the rampant speculation over his future.

Recent reports have suggested that the Slough-born starlet – who is also believed to be attracting attention from Frank Lampard’s Everton – could be set to move to the London Stadium on a loan deal, having previously been linked with a £30m permanent switch.

Supporters will be buzzing

Supporters will undoubtedly be buzzing to hear that the deal is heading in the right direction, having perhaps been somewhat concerned when the £8.5k-per-week menace had linked up with his fellow teammates on tour, following the lack of movement regarding a departure.

A new centre-forward addition has been a necessity for manager David Moyes this summer due to the ongoing burden on current number nine, Michail Antonio, with the Jamaica international the only, recognised senior striker in the squad at present.

The 32-year-old – who is the club’s highest scorer in Premier League history – has gone from something of a makeshift stand-in to a real, genuine goalscoring threat in attack, having netted ten goals in each of the past three top-flight campaigns.

That being said, he endured a particularly dry spell in the second half of last term, scoring just three league goals in 2022, with Moyes and co also perhaps paying the price in Europe for their lack of a genuine alternative.

The former Nottingham Forest man has himself admitted that the Irons are in need of striking competition to help carry the workload, having been without a direct rival since Sebastian Haller’s departure for Ajax 18 months ago.

In Broja then, GSB will be adding a young and hungry asset who has proven his credentials in the top tier, notably netting nine goals in all competitions while on loan at Southampton last season, including bagging six goals in the league.

Although the east Londoners have a long-running tradition for making failed, centre-forward signings, the hope will be that the £19.8m-rated brute can buck the trend, having shown promising glimpses of his talent under Ralph Hasenhuttl in the 2021/22 campaign.

If he can replicate and build upon that form under Moyes next season, then supporters will no doubt be in for a real treat.

AND in other news, Contact made: Moyes can unearth a new sensation as West Ham move for “complete” £39m target

West Brom can upgrade with Choudhury

West Bromwich Albion can seriously upgrade their midfield and give their promotion push next season a huge boost by signing Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury this summer.

The Baggies have been strongly linked to Choudhury recently with the Birmingham Mail reporting that Leicester would be willing to let the player leave, but would prefer a permanent deal rather than a loan.

Whether West Brom are willing to pay the fee required is another matter, but if they’re not, then in any loan deal they would still have to pay 80% of his wages, according to The Express and Star.

They are also not the only club interested with fellow Championship side Middlesbrough also admirers of the player. Steve Bruce’s side need to do all they can to land the 24-year-old who can seriously improve their midfield.

The club’s current squad is in need of a refresh, and we think that Choudhury would be a better option than club captain Jake Livermore. As controversial as it may sound, at 32 years old, the Baggies skipper isn’t getting any younger.

If they are to compete at the top end of the league, they need players who are almost Premier League quality, and Livermore certainly isn’t that anymore.

He made 37 appearances for the West Midlands side last season so played a key part, and having previously played under Bruce at Hull City, he’ll be tough for the manager to drop.

However, just because he wouldn’t be starting as many games doesn’t mean he wouldn’t have a key role to play, particularly in the dressing room if the team are fighting to go up.

Choudhury has been described as “excellent” by journalist Baz Cooper, and his performances in a Leicester shirt have seen him talked about as a future England star.

Bruce has also admired him for a long time and even wanted to bring him to Newcastle United during his sting on Tyneside.

If you compare him to Livermore you can see he performs better in many areas, he makes on average 2.0 interceptions per game which is better than the WBA captain’s 1.1.

He also won an impressive 70% of duels last season with Livermore winning 47%. This is simply a transfer West Brom have to be making.

Liverpool must ramp up interest in Bowen

Sadio Mane is set to leave Liverpool this summer as a deal is reportedly getting closer to being made with Bayern Munich, and now the club must do all they can for damage control in terms of replacing his attacking output and goal contributions in the team.

The Senegalese winger has played a huge part in the success during Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at Anfield over the last six years, with the player integral in winning several trophies including the Premier League title, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup, so to replace him will be no easy task for FSG.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Darwin Nunez has completed his move to Merseyside, but with Divock Origi leaving the club on a free transfer and Taki Minamino speculated to be sold this summer, further reinforcements may be required at the club to ensure they have enough depth to compete on all fronts once again next season.

With that being said, the powers at Anfield must identify and carefully consider potential transfer targets that can join the formidable forward line to continue Liverpool’s pursuit for trophies, and Jarrod Bowen could be the transfer target up to the job.

The West Ham United star has been a player that Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have admired and held interest in for some time, and the German coach has even reserved high praise for the player calling him “unbelievable” in a press conference last season.

The £75m ace who was hailed “first-class” and a “genius” by Daniel Gabiddon has been an absolute force for the Hammers scoring 18 goals and delivering 15 assists in 51 appearances across all competitions, but it’s not just his goal contributions that have caught the attention and interest of other clubs.

In 36 Premier League appearances, Bowen has created nine big chances, made 1.2 key passes, one tackle and taken 2.2 shots on average per game while proving successful in completing the majority of his dribbles (57%), evidence that he is an absolute nuisance for his opponents.

However, if Liverpool want to sign the winger this summer they will need to ramp up their interest as soon as possible, as Arsenal have now reportedly made contact with West Ham about signing Bowen according to The Beautiful Game Podcast.

Signing the 25-year-old would be a great piece of business for Liverpool as he could be the perfect Mane heir in terms of his attacking talents and could even strike up a great partnership with new signing Nunez if he was deployed in the Liverpool forward line in the future.

Rangers: Alan Nixon delivers Oladapo Afolayan transfer update

Reliable journalist Alan Nixon has suggested that Glasgow Rangers could look to bring Bolton winger Oladapo Afolayan to Ibrox as a replacement for Ryan Kent.

The Lowdown: Kent interest

Kent first joined the Scottish Premiership outfit on a four-year deal worth £7.5m from Liverpool back in 2019, but having now entered the final 12 months of his current contract in Glasgow, the forward has been attracting plenty of interest from the Premier League, with the likes of Wolves, Leeds, Everton, and Fulham all said to be keen on the former top-flight man.

With the possibility of Giovanni van Bronckhorst losing his number 14 very much real, now would be the perfect time for the Dutch manager to start looking for a potential replacement, and it appears as though the ideal candidate that has been identified to fill that role in Afolayan, after it was revealed last month that the Gers are weighing up a summer deal.

The Latest: Nixon’s Afolayan reveal

In response to a fan question asking whether the Gers could make an attempt to sign the Wanderers attacker in the coming weeks, Nixon wrote:

“Only if Kent goes I suspect … if there was spare cash you could do him as cover … if he fancied that.”

The Verdict: Time to cash in

Kent is set to become a free agent when his contract at the Ibrox expires next summer, but Rangers simply cannot afford to let him go for nothing.

The £18k-per-week ace has become a hugely pivotal player under van Bronckhorst, having provided a staggering 20 assists across all competitions this season, as well as managing to get on the scoresheet three times himself too, as per Transfermarkt.

This kind of scintillating form would make Kent a brilliant signing for any English side and they would probably be able to offer him more money than what he’s on now, so if the maestro decides not to extend his stay in Scotland, the best option would be for the club to cash in and indeed make a move for Afolayan.

The 24 year-old has been hailed for ‘pressing all over the pitch’ by former Mansfield manager John Dempster, who says he runs ‘himself into the ground’, seemingly making him the perfect fit for GvB’s high intensity style.

In other news… Rangers are believed to have rejected a bid for one of their first-team stars.

Farbrace's Sussex challenge: 'No reason why we shouldn't be pushing to get promoted'

New head coach wants young squad to make big strides after tough transition at Hove

Alan Gardner30-Mar-2023Rarely does an audience with Paul Farbrace, set to embark on his first season as Sussex’s new head coach, not throw up several talking points. He was in typically garrulous mood for the club’s media day at Hove on Wednesday, holding court on his time spent coaching at the International League T20 over the winter, Sussex’s “unacceptable” recent record in the Championship, their signing of Australia’s Steven Smith ahead of the Ashes, and the state of county cricket in general (“in a good place”).At one point, having sidestepped a question about the potential involvement of English players in Major League Cricket – a tournament that threatens a regular clash with the ECB’s prime summer white-ball slots – to allow Ravi Bopara, Sussex’s T20 captain, to give his view, Farbrace followed up with a twinkle: “That sounds like a bloke who has done his homework on dates.”It is Farbrace’s evident enthusiasm and busy can-do approach that Sussex hope can harness a talented group of young players after several years of underperformance down on the south coast. Amid a raft of departures, and no shortage of supporter discontent, the club have managed just three wins in first-class cricket – and 19 defeats – over the last three seasons. But Farbrace has already scotched any talk of incremental progress and set out two lofty goals: promotion from Division Two of the Championship, and an appearance at T20 Finals Day.”We don’t want to start talking about winning two or three games this year, rather than one last year, [and then] let’s try and do a little bit better next year. We’ve been very open with the players [that] promotion in Championship cricket is our absolute goal, and getting to Finals Day and challenging to win the T20. It is achievable with the players that we’ve got, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be pushing to get promoted and get into Finals Day.”I know that sounds punchy, and I know that sounds as though perhaps I’m a little bit deluded there. But if we come in and we start talking at the start of the season about ‘let’s see how far we can go, let’s hope to win a few games’ – well, let’s not bother turning up.”Sussex have leaned heavily on their academy in recent seasons – in part due to the financial necessity that also sees a newly completed ziggurat of flats watching over the south entrance to the ground – and take obvious pride in developing a number of promising players in their teens and early 20s. The club provided nine players to England at various representative levels over the winter, from Ollie Robinson in the Test team to Tom Haines and Jack Carson with the Lions and as many as five members of the Under-19s squad that toured Australia.Haines captained the red-ball side last year, stepping up after Travis Head did not return for the second year of his contract with Sussex, but Farbrace has opted to lighten his load. India’s Cheteshwar Pujara will instead lead the team in the Championship, with Tom Alsop lined up to fill in when Pujara is away on Test duty; Haines will captain the one-day side, while being allowed more time to focus on his batting.Cheteshwar Pujara will captain Sussex in the Championship this year•Getty ImagesAs well as Pujara and Smith, who will join for three Championship games in May, Sussex have recruited the Australian allrounder Nathan McAndrew to bolster a squad that has not been used to winning. Pujara and McAndrew are due to arrive in time for the start of the season while Robinson is also expected to play in next week’s opener against Durham, as he works towards his Ashes head-to-head with Smith later in the summer.”Players learn from players, and the more high-quality people we have around our players, the quicker they’ll learn and the quicker they’ll learn how to win those tough periods of games, which will allow them then to start winning games of cricket. You win the tough sessions, and then you win another tough session, and then you win the day – before you know where you are, you’re winning games and it becomes an expectation rather than hope. And I think that’s the narrative that we have to change – not hope, let’s expect.”We’ve got to be stronger, [saying] that this is the session that we need to make sure we stay in the game, and then we can start getting ourselves back into winning the game again. And that’s why you need to break it down hour-by-hour, session-by-session, basically.”On the notion that the counties ought to play with more of a “Bazball” mentality this year, following on from the success of the England Test team under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, Farbrace said “positive, attacking cricket” would be encouraged at Sussex. In particular, a bowling attack that has struggled in the absence of senior heads like Robinson, Jofra Archer and Steven Finn, will be told to focus on wicket-taking rather than economy.Related

“Our batting I’ve got no issues with, I think we’ve got a lot of batters who will naturally take the game on,” Farbrace said. “But it’s our bowlers, if we can get that shift into their mindset, then I think that that could really work well for us.”And Farbrace, who was assistant to Trevor Bayliss when England last won the Ashes in 2015, is in no doubt that first-class cricket – and the Championship in particular – is something that must continue to be nurtured. While England were crowned T20 World Champions in November, and the ever-expanding franchise circuit offers increased opportunity for English players during the off-season, Farbrace warned that the ECB could only continue to have the best of both worlds if it looked after the domestic structure at home.”There is a danger for any young cricketer that can strike a cricket ball, you could end up playing nine months of the year white-ball cricket, three months’ red-ball cricket. That’s why I was really strong last year [during the Strauss review] when we started talking about reducing Championship cricket from 14 to 10 games. I was very much of the view we need to maintain 14 games and we need to protect county cricket, because county cricket is where we produce players to play for England.”County cricket is alive and well, producing a lot of very talented players – we all know that when England struggle away from home, we look at county cricket but actually county cricket is in a good place. And I think we’ve got to protect Championship cricket and make it the best version we can.”

Lahore Qalandars look to go one better, Karachi Kings bank on top order, Peshawar Zalmi in reboot mode

Here is part 2 of our team-by-team guide to the new Pakistan Super League season

Umar Farooq19-Feb-2021Lahore QalandarsTeam overview
All those seasons at the bottom of the table were forgotten last year thanks to the Qalandars’ bristling competitiveness. The franchise rose from the ashes and stormed into their final by eliminating Peshawar Zalmi and then the league toppers Multan Sultans, before they lost to the Karachi Kings in the final. Over the years, the Qalandars had struggled to find their ideal combination and grappled with injuries and player unavailability, but last season they managed to create a desirable core under their captain Sohail Akhtar, a product of their player-development program.Related

The Qalandars now have a deadly bowling trio at their disposal, comprising the three highest T20 wicket-takers of 2020 in Haris Rauf (57), Rashid Khan (56) and Shaheen Afridi (52). And while this dynamic attack makes them stand out from the rest of the teams, their batting also packs a punch, with their top order including Fakhar Zaman, who is looking to revive his Pakistan career, Akhtar, who comes into the tournament with T10 form behind him, and Ben Dunk, who made 300 runs last season at a strike rate of 167.59. The Qalandars have retained him for this season, and released Chris Lynn. The middle order also bursts with authority with Mohammad Hafeez, David Wiese and Samit Patel in the ranks. These three aren’t the youngest, but they bring valuable experience and rock-solid temperaments.Strengths
The Qalandars possess a bowling attack with all bases covered – pace, seam, left-arm spin, legspin, offspin. The captain Sohail Akhtar is an underrated batsman, who has a T20 hundred under his belt. His career strike rate of 128.68 might not look too flash, but he comes into the PSL with a chart-topping 248 runs at a strike rate of 187.87 in the Abu Dhabi T10. Hafeez has hit a purple patch in the shortest format of late, scoring 1005 runs at an average of 47.85 and a strike rate of 141.54 since the start of 2020. He’s added a new dimension to his game with improved power-hitting, and even at 40 the Professor shows no signs of stopping.Weaknesses
Rashid is with the Qalandars for only two games since he will be leaving for national duty to play a Test series against Zimbabwe for Afghanistan. The Qalandars don’t have too much cover for his role, and his loss will be felt going deep in the tournament. After a promising start to his international career across formats, Fakhar Zaman is now out of favour with his form dipping significantly. The Qalandars will hope he can get back to his best because he is a key figure in their top order.Roster

The Karachi Kings broke their playoffs jinx last year to win the title. Otherwise, they had never finished in the top two, losing three times in the Eliminator and finishing in third place in 2017. They have always had a star-studded roster and arguably started each season as one of the favorites with a triumvirate of three long-standing players – Babar Azam, Mohammad Amir, and Imad Wasim as the captain – as their defining feature. This year, as in the last few seasons, they have carefully injected firepower into their top order to bat around Babar Azam, trading Alex Hales with Islamabad United to bring back Colin Ingram, who had two sensational seasons for the Kings in 2018 and 2019, scoring 587 runs at a strike rate of 153.66.Their coaching panel is largely taken care of by director and president Wasim Akram but the franchise has also roped in the former South Africa batsman Herschelle Gibbs as their head coach. Gibbs comes into the role that was previously held by Dean Jones, who died aged 59 in September last year in Mumbai. In November, the franchise dedicated their maiden title to Jones.Strengths
The top five positions offer guaranteed firepower with Sharjeel Khan, Ingram and Dan Christian capable of booming strike rates and batting around the class of Babar Azam.Weaknesses
The Kings have decent bowling options but their pace attack can be over-reliant on Mohammad Amir’s four-over quota. His form cost him his Pakistan place recently, and if he doesn’t fire on a given day, it might test the other fast bowlers – Arshad Iqbal, Waqas Maqsood and Aamer Yamin. It could be a make-or-break season for Amir’s career. A lack of batting depth could be an issue, with the Kings lacking truly top-drawer hitters down the order, though Imad and Mohammad Nabi can do a decent job.Roster
Aamer Yamin, Arshad Iqbal, Babar Azam, Colin Ingram, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir, Sharjeel Khan, Waqas Maqsood, Chadwick Walton, Dan Christian, Danish Aziz, Joe Clarke, Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Ilyas, Noor Ahmed, Qasim Akram, Zeeshan MalikPotential First XI

The franchise is in a rebuilding phase after losing their premier fast bowler Hasan Ali – who parted ways to join Islamabad United. They are the only team after Karachi to have made the playoffs each time they’ve played the tournament in the last five years. They’ve played as many as three finals, but won only once. Zalmi are going through a reboot this year, having retained only five players in the draft while every other team retained the maximum quota of eight to secure their core. This is a new development, since no team has had as loyal a core as Zalmi’s since the league began in 2016. Darren Sammy, Hasan Ali, Kamran Akmal and Wahab Riaz have worn no other colours until Hasan decided to leave; they also went through a mid-season crisis earlier, having to bench Sammy and appoint him as a coach. Their head coach Mohammad Akram – who has also been with the franchise from the beginning – has said the team is looking to make a fresh start.Strengths
The middle-order is brimming with experience, with Shoaib Malik and Ravi Bopara occupying key positions. The bowling is largely based on their go-to quick Wahab Riaz, who is the leading wicket-taker in the PSL and has made a crucial contribution to Zalmi’s success over the years. He might be missing Hasan at the other end but the attack will be bolstered by the arrival of the Afghanistan mystery spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who had a decent BBL season, picking up 14 wickets at an average of 13.42 and an economy rate of 6.26. Weaknesses
Veteran Kamran Akmal hasn’t had a good run lately with the bat, and has missed chunks of the recent domestic season due to fitness issues. Liam Livingstone pulling out on national duty has exposed cracks in the top order, leaving it largely in the hands of the inexperienced Haider Ali. Tom Kohler-Cadmore has been brought in as a replacement but he doesn’t have a lot of experience in Asian conditions. Imam ul Haq, meanwhile, has hardly played since picking up a thumb injury in New Zealand. Roster
