Durham 363 for 7 (Bedingham 118, Lees 70, Gibbon 4-75) vs WorcestershireDavid Bedingham pressed his international credentials with a brilliant century on day one of Durham’s LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two clash against Worcestershire at Seat Unique Riverside. Before the start of the season, Bedingham declared his intention to play for his home nation of South Africa rather than await his availability for an England call. He duly delivered a timely reminder of his quality with a sublime innings of 118 after Alex Lees provided the platform with a knock of 70 at the top of the order, allowing Durham to post 363 for 7.Ben Gibbon and Adam Finch were the pick of the Worcestershire bowlers, preventing the hosts from building a dominant position by taking timely wickets. Gibbon ended the day with four for 75, including the scalp of Bedingham in the final hour, to drag his team back into the game on day one. After being inserted, Durham opener Lees endured a streaky start to his knock. He survived two inside edges and was able to settle into a rhythm with Michael Jones, and Lees quickly brought up the fifty stand in the 11th over with a cut to the fence, continuing Durham’s attacking intent from their opening match against Sussex.Finch and Gibbon turned the momentum of the morning session by hitting the pitch hard with a tight line. Back-to-back maidens forced a mistake from Jones to hand Finch the breakthrough. Finch continued to run in from the Lumley End and his effort ball ended a difficult 58-ball stay for Durham captain Scott Borthwick, who looked rusty following his return from a finger injury.Lees remained stoic and ground out his second fifty of the season from 110 deliveries. The England opener was not at his fluent best but displayed much-needed resilience to hand his team a solid platform before he was finally undone by a peach from Gibbon, who found the gap between bat and pad and removed his middle stump.Bedingham was the beneficiary of Lees’ exploits and ensured that Durham capitalised on their position of strength, surging past his fifty at almost a run-a-ball. The South African was in pristine touch and pressed on toward three figures after taking 15 runs from Finch’s 14th over, including a brilliant pull into the pavilion to register his first six of the day.Bedingham notched his 14th first-class century with a gentle nudge into the leg side, earning the deserved applause of the Riverside crowd after a near-faultless knock. The right-hander was taken out of his rhythm by a rain break, and the brief pause allowed Gibbon to return with the new ball to prise out Bedingham, ending a stand of 113 with Graham Clark for the fifth wicket. One wicket became three in seven deliveries as the hosts were in danger of throwing away their grip of day one as Gibbon and Joe Leach struck to remove Jonathan Bushnell and Clark. Ben Raine and Paul Coughlin stemmed the tide with a fifty-run stand to give Durham a narrow edge on the scoreboard heading into day two.

'Jack De Bruyne!' – Erling Haaland is loving Grealish's resurgence at Everton as Man City striker compares close pal to mutual friend Kevin

Jack Grealish’s flying start to life at Everton has already sparked huge reactions, with Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland branding him “Jack De Bruyne” after another influential performance. The England international registered two more assists in Everton’s win over Wolves, taking his tally to four in just two games and drawing flattering comparisons to Kevin De Bruyne.

Grealish has quickly settled at Goodison Park after making a surprise loan switch from Manchester City to Everton this summer. Against Wolves, the winger set up Beto for the opener and was pivotal in the build-up to Iliman Ndiaye’s strike before providing the assist for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s winner. That performance made him the first Everton player to record two assists in consecutive Premier League games for his new side, and Haaland is loving his close friend's resurgence.

On Snapchat, Haaland posted a snap with the caption: “Jack De Bruyne does it again for Everton."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

For Grealish, this represents a much-needed resurgence after struggling for game time at Manchester City last season, where he made just seven league starts. Everton have given him the platform to rediscover his creativity and confidence, instantly making him a central figure under David Moyes. His early form suggests he could be one of the signings of the season if his momentum continues, and he could also present a selection headache for Thomas Tuchel for the 2026 World Cup.

Everton fans will be eager to see if Grealish can maintain this electric start as they look to push for a stronger Premier League campaign. His creativity could prove decisive in lifting the Toffees away from relegation scraps and into mid-table safety. For City, his form raises questions about whether they might regret letting him leave, even temporarily.

Gianluigi Donnarumma 'not pleased' as PSG tell him they're definitely signing a €40m replacement goalkeeper – and Man Utd & Chelsea target will LOSE his No.1 status

Gianluigi Donnarumma has reportedly been told by Paris Saint-Germain about their plan to sign Lucas Chevalier from LOSC Lille, leaving the Italian understandably frustrated.

The French and European champions have agreed a deal to bring the 23-year-old Frenchman to the club, in a move that has disturbed the Italian goalkeeper. report that, when Donnarumma was made aware of Chevalier's imminent arrival, he wasn't pleased amid uncertainties over his place in the starting line-up. Donnarumma was integral to PSG's success in the Champions League last season and will clearly be upset to have been cast aside.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Should Donnarumma, whose contract expires in 2026, be made available for transfer, it will alert a number of leading clubs across Europe and the rest of the world. Both Manchester United and Chelsea are searching for a new man between the sticks, with Andre Onana and Robert Sanchez yet to prove a stable, safe pair of hands. Donnarumma would provide a comprehensive upgrade for both Premier League clubs, but there are yet to be any club-to-club discussions. Given the 26-year-old's contract situation, PSG will be determined to get the highest fee possible in the summer transfer window to avoid the risk of losing him for nothing.

DID YOU KNOW?

United's hunt for a new goalkeeper has proven to be a thankless task so far this window. Moves for Botafogo's John Victor and Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez have failed to materialise and there appears to be few clubs ready to take the error-prone Onana off of their hands. The Red Devils' transfer woes do not stop their either, with reports on August 2 claiming that Benjamin Sesko has chosen Newcastle over Old Trafford as his next club.

Josh Tongue seeks another taste of the action after summer to savour

Fast bowler made strong impression in England colours, now he’s seeking further honours

Vithushan Ehantharajah21-Nov-2023From the verge of retirement to holding a prized central contract – it has been a whirlwind 12 months for Josh Tongue. At the back-end of 2022, following a 15-month spell on the sidelines with a shoulder issue, calling time on a promising fast-bowling career and utilising a Level 2 coaching badge was given serious consideration. Now, as one of seven England fast bowlers on multi-year deals, a level of security he admits to having “dreamt about”, his stock and confidence are as high as ever.Much has happened in a short period of time for a player who turned 26 on Wednesday. A botox injection in his neck proved a revelation when it came to calming the nerves afflicting his shoulder, allowing him to tour Sri Lanka with England Lions at the start of 2023. A red-ball debut for the representative side went well, taking 5 for 34 and 3 for 77, with managing director Rob Key – who presented his cap – impressed enough to push his case down the line.Tongue then dismissed Steve Smith in a County Championship match for Worcestershire against Sussex to provide an early-season boost to his credentials, manifesting into a Test debut against Ireland at Lord’s, which he marked with 5 for 66. A second cap would come at the same venue in the Ashes, in which he would remove Smith once more in the first innings, albeit when the Australian had 110 to his name.Tongue also underwent a change of counties, moving from New Road to Trent Bridge, though getting acquainted with his Nottinghamshire team-mates will have to wait. On Thursday, he flew to the United Arab Emirates as part of a Lions training camp aimed at gearing up for the challenge of a gruelling five-Test tour of India to come in the New Year.Even that trip to the UAE will be short and sweet; Tongue has been included in both ODI and T20i squads for the West Indies tour in December. He will travel straight to the Caribbean to join up with an England squad desperate to draw a line under their dismal 2023 World Cup campaign.Related

“The last year has been a bit of a rollercoaster,” Tongue said. “Before that, nearly retiring because of my shoulder injury and then being picked for that Lions tour of Sri Lanka, I was over the moon about that. And this summer, playing the Ireland Test and then being in the squad for the Ashes and then playing that game at Lord’s, it was a special moment – a bit surreal, I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.”I didn’t start the season well for Worcestershire (11 Division Two wickets at 41.45 in four matches leading up to his maiden Test call-up), so being selected for that Ireland Test was a bit of a surprise because there were a couple of injuries. Once I got into that environment with Baz [Brendon McCullum] and Stokesy it was such a chilled environment, and being around Jimmy (Anderson) and (Stuart) Broad was just amazing.”For obvious reasons, the Lord’s Test against Australia stands alone as a highlight. The occasion in itself would have been memorable enough, but with England 1-0 down after losing at Edgbaston and with Just Stop Oil protesters storming the pitch after the first over of the match, the events of the final day took it to another level, with Jonny Bairstow’s contentious run-out followed by Ben Stokes’ remarkable 155. Tongue took 5 for 151 in the match, and his dismissal in the second innings – losing his leg stump attempting to slog – confirmed Australia’s 43-run win to go 2-0 up.Josh Tongue celebrates his maiden Test wicket against Ireland at Lord’s•Gareth Copley/Getty Images”A lot did happen in that match!” he reflected. “For me personally, just walking through the Long Room about to do the national anthem. I have said to all my family and friends I am never going to forget that moment, in the Long Room. It’s just electric in there. It didn’t help that the Oil protestors came on straight away – and I was just like ‘urgh, I just want to get playing now’.”Even in the Ireland Test, I think there was like 28,000 in and that is the biggest crowd I have ever played in front of and I knew when I got told I was playing in the Ashes match that this is going to be full – 35,000. Just amazing.”Even batting towards the end with Jimmy – I never thought I’d be batting with Jimmy Anderson at the other end even a couple of months before that – the crowd was amazing. I tried to have a bit of fun (Tongue struck 19 off 26), tried to move round the crease and, erm, got bowled at the end.”Following Broad’s retirement, a more permanent seam bowling spot has opened up, and Tongue’s strong first impressions in the format, consistently sending the ball down in the high eighties puts him in a good spot. It helps, too, that McCullum and Stokes have created an environment he feels brings out the best in him.”I think my pace will help in subcontinental conditions and I can get the ball to reverse as well and my bouncer tactic, which Stokes obviously likes, will benefit the team.”I know being in that Test squad, the pressure is really taken off you. Stokesy and Baz were so good in terms of telling me how to play my cricket – ‘you are here for a reason, you are good enough to be here, have fun, chill out, don’t put too much pressure on yourself’ – and obviously it is going to be a lot different over in India. I have never been to India before, it will be very exciting if I am selected.”It is pretty much guaranteed that Tongue will be in India, with the Lions also touring the country parallel to the main squad. The experience in Sri Lanka earlier this year has him in good stead when it comes to a fast bowler’s duties on the subcontinent. He will look to fine-tune those elements over the next fortnight.”I normally bowl from mid-crease, so mixing up the angles, even coming round the wicket to the right-hander, trying to reverse the ball back in. Obviously it is a bit harder getting LBs (leg before) from round the wicket, but [it’s about] making sure that length is fuller to get that. I think just being a bit unpredictable as well, batters don’t like that; just mix up angles, even cross-seamers. Just something different.”He also has limited-overs skills to hone: “Death stuff – yorkers, slower balls etc, towards the back end, I bowl in the powerplay as well and in the middle, so I am used to that. One of my main areas of getting better is the back-end of the innings.”The aim, ultimately, is to show the selectors he can be an option for all formats. Tongue’s career to date has largely been skewed towards the red ball, with 50 first-class appearances set against 15 List A and 15 T20 matches. He impressed in 2023’s Men’s Hundred, taking seven wickets at 17.85 for Manchester Originals under England’s white-ball captain Jos Buttler, who will be more willing than ever for fresh blood for the next World Cup cycle, including next summer’s T20 World Cup. Tongue is likely to pick up his first white-ball cap before the year comes to an end, and there is every chance 2024 will be as memorable as 2023.”I have played a lot more red-ball than white-ball, but I do see myself as an all-three-format bowler, and I want to get better at my white-ball cricket. Hopefully, I can showcase that in the West Indies.”

Arsenal set to offer contract to Bayern star ahead of cheap Emirates move

Arsenal have plans on making the summer window an exciting one under Mikel Arteta and could now swoop for an exciting star who is available on a free transfer, per reports.

Arsenal's main transfer priorities this summer

While the Gunners’ Premier League title challenge has fizzled out, they still have hope that a famous Champions League triumph could be on the cards if they can navigate past Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage.

Admittedly, that is easier said than done, but Arteta’s men haven’t given up hope of winning Europe’s famous prize. Regardless, the upcoming window is set to see some major transfer priorities addressed at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

Bringing in competition to bolster the forward line is at the top of the agenda, with Juventus star Kenan Yildiz now of interest to Arsenal despite potentially costing £75.7 million to prize away from Serie A.

Centrally, Alexander Isak is the Gunners’ dream attacking target. His form at Newcastle has been nothing short of spectacular, so it is no surprise that £150 million has been quoted as the fee needed to take him off the hands of Eddie Howe.

For now, supporters need to wait until summer for confirmation of arrivals. Still, it could be their lucky day following news that Arsenal are set to escalate their window business.

Arsenal to offer contract to Bayern Munich's Leroy Sane

According to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are set to offer a contract to Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane, who is on course to become a free agent this summer with his deal at Bayern Munich expiring.

Having formerly worked with him at Manchester City, Arteta is keen to seal a deal even if the German international’s wage demands require some negotiation in the coming months.

Arsenal have now done "a lot of the groundwork" to sign "prolific" £59m ace

The Gunners could have a good chance of winning the race for a top striker…

ByDominic Lund Mar 21, 2025

Labelled “special” by Pep Guardiola in 2019, Sane has registered nine goals and five assists in 35 appearances across all competitions this campaign.

Famed for his pace and end product, the former Manchester City star has also laid on 26 chances in the Bundesliga and is one of the most renowned left-wingers on the planet.

Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli may have something to say about any prospective arrival. Nevertheless, the chance to sign proven experience on a free transfer may help the Gunners move to the next level.

Complementing Sane with a premium striker to combine with appears to be the plan of action for a club desperate to get themselves in and around domestic honours on a regular basis, so let’s see if they can push an agreement over the line.

Hazard loved him: Chelsea have already sold their answer to Evan Ferguson

One of the biggest issues at Chelsea currently is the lack of balance in the squad, whether it’s not having enough risk-takers in the attacking line, not having enough runners to stretch the pitch or not having enough defensive stability in the middle of the park.

This was highlighted recently when Chelsea took on Brighton in the FA Cup, starting with a front line of Christopher Nkunku up front, Pedro Neto on the right, Jadon Sancho on the left and Cole Palmer in the ten.

Chelsea only took seven shots in the game, failing to exploit the space Brighton gave them and looking rather toothless. It was clear they had too many players wanting to receive the ball into feet, rather than making sacrificial runs in behind and stretching the pitch for their teammates.

Enzo Maresca could do with a few more options in this squad of different profiles, in order to bring the best out of the talent he already has, by combining players with each other that complement their styles of play, rather than hinder them.

The profile of striker that Chelsea need

With the profile of winger that Chelsea currently have at the club, a lot of their play results in 1v1 scenarios where crosses can be put into the box. However, due to the lack of presence the Blues currently have in the penalty area, they often don’t threaten, with the opposition easily dealing with these types of balls into the area.

Players like Neto and Sancho, especially when playing together as a wing pairing, do not offer anywhere near enough goal threat to attack the box themselves, provide output with goals and help the team in that way.

But, what they can do, is find brilliant crossing angles, to provide high xG chances for the centre-forward.

Chelsea have been linked with plenty of varying profiles to Nicolas Jackson, to offer Maresca another route of breaking these lower block defences, one of which was Evan Ferguson, who ended up joining West Ham on loan in January.

Whilst the 20-year-old has suffered with some injuries in the past few years, his profile of being much more of an old school forward, wanting to stay in and around the box and put himself in situations to score, attacking crosses and causing chaos, is exactly what the Blues have been missing for a while now.

You have to go back a few years to remember that sort of player at Stamford Bridge…

Chelsea's answer to Evan Ferguson

Perhaps the last time Chelsea experienced an old-fashioned striker like this at their club, was Olivier Giroud, who made 119 appearances for the Blues, scoring 39 goals, providing 14 assists and totalling 5,700 minutes played.

When comparing the two forward’s metrics here, you can see the similar attributes they offer, looking to do the majority of their work around the box.

They are happy to have fewer touches and have less involvement in the game, subsequently registering a low number of progressive carries. That doesn’t stop them from being clinical in their final action, providing goals for the team and doing their job.

Giroud was described as the “ideal team player” by France international teammate, Antoine Griezmann, before playing his final home international match for his country in 2024 and he certainly proved that at Chelsea.

As it happens, after a stint in Milan where he was described as a “monster” by the Italian media, the 38-year-old is now playing his final years in the MLS in the United States, having joined LAFC on a free transfer in 2024.

Ultimately, whilst the likes of Giroud and Ferguson may not be the most star-studded names, they know their role in the team and will aid players around them even if it means they don’t get all the glory, which again, is something Chelsea seems to be missing in abundance right now.

Fewer touches than Vicario: Ange must drop 3/10 Spurs dud after Bournemouth

Tottenham Hotspur came from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with European chasing Bournemouth in North London earlier on this afternoon.

Goals from Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson gave the Cherries a two-goal advantage before Pape Sarr’s effort floated over Kepa Arrizabalaga, who fouled Heung-min Son in the area, resulting in the South Korean stepping up from the spot to level the game.

The point moved Ange Postecoglou’s side onto 34 points in the Premier League, sitting 10 points off Andoni Iraola’s men after the clash at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

TottenhamHotspur manager Ange Postecoglou celebrates after the match

With just ten games to go, the Aussie will be able to experiment with his side, potentially planning who he may look to move on over the summer to avenge this campaign’s woes.

As a result, numerous players who started the clash against the Cherries today could struggle to maintain their role in the squad going forward.

Spurs’ poor performers against Bournemouth

Cristian Romero returned to the side today after his recent injury layoff but demonstrated signs of rustiness after not featuring since the start of December.

The Argentine featured for an hour before being replaced, losing possession 13 times and committing two fouls before his withdrawal from the contest.

Midfielder Yves Bissouma was handed his first Premier League start since the beginning of February this afternoon, but like Romero, he looked off the pace throughout.

The former Brighton man was replaced at the break, after getting dribbled past once and picking up a booking for a challenge on Evanilson, which deliberately prevented the counter-attack.

However, despite the performances of the aforementioned duo, one other first-team regular failed to deliver, with Ange needing to drop him ahead of Thursday’s crunch Europa League clash.

The Spurs player who needs to be dropped after 3/10 display

In recent weeks, numerous Spurs attackers have stepped up their fitness after spells on the sidelines with various injury issues, handing Postecoglou the depth he’s craved in recent times.

Dominic Solanke and Wilson Odebert were both included from the first whistle this afternoon, but neither were able to get themselves on the scoresheet in North London.

However, both managed to feature for the entirety of the contest, but the same can’t be said about winger Brennan Johnson, who once again struggled to impress within the final third.

The Welshman started off the right-hand side of the front three, but failed to score for the third consecutive game after his double against Ipswich Town last month.

The 23-year-old managed just 29 touches during the draw, a tally lower than that of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who managed 47, showcasing the lack of impact he had on proceedings.

He also lost possession eight times, failing to complete any of his two attempted dribbles – looking toothless and unable to get the better of opposition full-back Milos Kerkez.

Johnson also failed to register a single effort on goal, winning just 25% of the duels he entered, subsequently resulting in his substitution at the break, replaced by match-leveller Son.

To compound the Welshman’s misery, he was handed a measly 3/10 match rating by Football London journalist Alasdair Gold – the joint-lowest of any Spurs player who’s started the meeting.

As a result of his lack of impact, Ange can’t take any chances, desperately needing to drop him ahead of Thursday’s crunch Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar.

The Lilywhites enter the second leg a goal down following the meeting in the Netherlands a few days ago, with the Aussie needing to consider other options than Johnson after his dismal showing.
