Vince, Silk destroy Heat to lift Sixers to second

The Sixers easily disposed of the Heat in Sydney on Sunday, led by a sizzling James Vince innings and a tame Heat reply. The Englishman made 75 from 45 deliveries, enabling the Sixers to post an imposing 177. After slumping to 2 for 16 after four, the Heat weren’t ever able to make a dent. The result moves the Sixers to ten points and second position, while the Heat remain rooted to seventh position with seven points. While enough time remains in the tournament for both sides to improve their position, a defeat was going to make matters difficult for the losing outfit.Sixers lay the foundationThe Heat won the bat flip and elected to field, leaving the Sixers to negotiate a wicket that appeared to be a fraction slow at first sight.Josh Philippe, promoted to open with Daniel Hughes, found the boundary four times from the first nine deliveries of the match before skying a Josh Lalor slower ball and departing for 17.Hughes kept the score rattling along, taking 13 from Jack Prestwidge’s first over, but soon departed when another Lalor slower ball – this one at 104kmph – had the opener dragging a pull shot on to his stumps. At 2 for 42 after the Powerplay, Henriques and Vince took up the mantle. The latter was able to free his arms regularly to find the rope as a solid partnership loomed. But an Henriques top-edge saw Lalor scoot around the edge of the third man boundary to take a good catch, arresting the Sixers’ momentum and bringing Jordan Silk to the crease.Getty Images

Vince and Silk take the game awayAs the Tasmania opener played himself in, Vince looked to accelerate, peppering the short boundary and providing plenty of work for Brendan Doggett and Prestwidge. Some solid boundary riding was interrupted when Doggett dropped a huge skier, and from there Vince stepped up a gear. He brought his fifty up in 35 balls, and was chief architect in setting up the Sixers total. It wasn’t without luck, as he was then dropped a second time by Doggett, this time after slogging Mitch Swepson to cow corner. The second was simpler than the first, and was painfully followed by a Vince six into the O’Reilly Stand. At this point, Silk joined the fray. Using all areas of the crease, he was consistently able to find runs through the leg side, at one point taking a Ben Cutting over for 17, as the Sixers closed in a total of 170-plus. With so many wickets in hand, Vince and Silk entered helter-skelter mode, before Vince eventually perished for 75 from 45 balls, caught after attempting to reverse sweep Mujeeb.Silk followed soon after, crabbing across too far as Lalor took his leg stump, handing the Heat pacer his third wicket. His fourth came after Alex Ross took a great catch running in from the deep after Tom Curran skied one to leg, and he then claimed a fifth – the only five-for of the tournament – after Jack Edwards was caught at long-off. It meant Lalor had 5 for 26, great reward for a spell that expertly mixed cutters and quicker deliveries. The Heat were never in itSteve O’Keefe opened the bowling and could hardly have started his team off better. He bowled Max Bryant with the fourth ball of the over, before containing Chris Lynn to finish with a wicket maiden. Ben Dwarshuis conceded one from his opening over, before O’Keefe returned and yielded only two.At 1 for 4 from three overs, the Heat needed to make a move. Bash Brothers Inc were able to combine for eleven from Dwarshuis’ next over, but Lynn came unstuck from Sean Abbott’s first ball, heaving one straight in the dewy air, leaving the ball to be well-held by Edwards. It was largely a run a ball for the period thereafter, which left the Heat needing nearly 12 an over with only eight overs gone. With the pressure mounting, Lloyd Pope then produced a delivery of quality,, enticing Jimmy Peirson from his crease, spinning it past the bat and allowing Phillipe to effect a sharp stumping. All that stood between the Sixers and a much-needed win was McCullum, and it was the flame-haired leggie, Pope, who picked him up. On 27 from 31, McCullum tried to sweep Pope in front of square, but sliced it all the way to Silk on the deep midwicket boundary, as he clasped it tight into his chest. The task was insurmountable from thereon, and the Heat’s batting slumped as a result. They lost wickets at regular intervals, with only Ben Cutting providing a sliver of light with a bright 28 before he was comprehensively bowled by Tom Curran, who led an excellent Sixers bowling performance, picking up 3 for 16.

Tottenham looking to sign "exceptional" star who could solve major problem

Tottenham Hotspur are now looking toward the January window and have reportedly identified a player who could help to solve a major problem in N17.

Tottenham Hotspur's injury struggles…

Since arriving from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic in the summer, Ange Postecoglou has gone on to have a major impact in the Premier League and has repeatedly shown his unwavering commitment to playing a brand of high-intensity attacking football.

As most fans and pundits alike will now know, the Australian boss has absolutely no desire to change his system any time soon; however, the Lilywhites' relentless commitment to forcing the issue has begun to take its toll on his squad regarding injury concerns.

As cited by The Evening Standard, Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur are absent for the Lilywhites at the moment, with the latter set for a lengthy period on the sidelines. Cristian Romero has been suspended of late and has been a big miss in central defence for Spurs following his red card against Chelsea last month.

Micky van de Ven, Ryan Sessengon, James Maddison, Ivan Perisic and Manor Solomon are mentioned by LondonWorld as other notable players who are currently on the treatment table at Hotspur Way, which will likely ramp up expectations for Postecoglou to move in January to secure additional squad reinforcements.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham will try to recruit another midfielder in the mid-season window following news of Bentacur's recent injury after internal talks were held at the club over their winter transfer plans.

Yves Bissouma and Matar Sarr are also expected to depart in January to feature in the African Cup of Nations for their respective nations, which has prompted Spurs to act as their options in the engine room dwindle by the week.

Fresh information has now come to light about who could potentially join Tottenham in January to help offer some cover in the middle of the park, according to one recent claim.

Tottenham Hotspur in race to sign Kalvin Phillips

Tottenham are believed to be keen on Manchester City outcast Kalvin Phillips, who has been told that he is free to leave the Etihad Stadium in January to seek a new challenge, as per Football Insider.

Nevertheless, Spurs will need to see off competition from several other clubs to sign the England international. Newcastle United, West Ham United and Serie A giants Juventus are all keeping tabs on the former Leeds United man heading into the January window.

Predominantly used as a substitute by his current employers, Phillips will be keen to secure a move sooner rather than later to ensure his inclusion in Gareth Southgate's Three Lions squad for EURO 2024.

Nevertheless, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano did share quotes last month from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, detailing that the Catalan manager labelled the 27-year-old as "exceptional" while also signalling that he is set for a January departure, as he stated the following on social media platform X.

Given Tottenham's injury crisis, bringing Phillips to north London could prove to be a shrewd bit of business from Postecoglou that would help to shore up his midfield ahead of the second portion of this campaign.

Journalist shares news on contract talks with "unplayable" Sunderland star

Sunderland have a number of key players who are vital to their Championship promotion charge, but a key update has emerged over the future of an “unplayable” ace.

Sunderland’s promotion charge

The Black Cats have made an encouraging start to their league season, as they look to go one better than last time around, when they were beaten by Luton Town in the playoffs. On Saturday afternoon, Tony Mowbray’s side drew 0-0 away to Swansea City, and while a point is a solid enough result, they did face 10 men for much of the proceedings, meaning failure to win was a little frustrating.

Sunderland certainly look well-placed to mount another strong promotion tilt this season, but for that to happen, they will need their most important players to keep performing and stay fit, with the matches continuing to come thick and fast in the New Year. Injuries can often been key in any season, so Mowbray will be hoping for good fortune in that department as the weeks and months pass.

There are key players everywhere you look at the Stadium of Light currently, whether it be Anthony Patterson in goal, or Jobe Bellingham and Jack Clarke outfield, among numerous others, but a worrying update has dropped over the future of one indispensable figure.

Jack Clarke’s Sunderland future

Jack Clarke

According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon, Sunderland are finding it hard to tie Clarke down to a new deal, throwing his future into doubt. He has been offered a pay rise, in order to keep him for as long as possible, but no progress has been made yet. Nixon states that the Black Cats are “struggling” to persuade him to extend his stay at the club, with Brentford one of the sides who are believed to be on “red alert” for his signature, seeing him as an exciting option to bring in.

Clarke has undoubtedly become one of the first names on Mowbray’s team sheet these days, and in general since arriving from Tottenham in 2022, providing so much quality in the final third and performing with such consistency. A class act, Clarke’s statistics so far this season highlight what a strong campaign he is having, with nine goals coming his way in just 15 Championship appearances.

If the 22-year-old was to suddenly leave for a Premier League club midway through the season, it could have a massive impact on Sunderland’s promotion hopes, and even if next summer is when the interest emerges, it would still be a huge setback to see him move on.

The lure of moving to the top flight is clearly great for many players, so it is understandable why Clarke’s head could potentially be turned, and Adrian Clarke has described him as an “unplayable” footballer in the past. Clarke's Sunderland deal doesn’t expire until the summer of 2026, meaning the Black Cats are in a strong bargaining position to demand big money for one of their star men, but it would still be preferable to see him remain at the club for years to come.

Proved to the world what we can do – Anshuman Rath

Anshuman Rath, the Hong Kong captain, believes his side will leave the UAE with the satisfaction of “having shown the world” what they can do, and has implored the ICC to look at Associate cricket more seriously, after his side nearly upset India on Tuesday.Rath, who starred in a 174-run opening stand, Hong Kong’s highest ever in ODIs, with Nizakat Khan, set the base for a 286 chase, before his team’s inexperience in the middle showed. They eventually lost by 26 runs to get knocked out of the Asia Cup.”I think today was bittersweet,” Rath said. “We proved to the world what we can do, but in saying that, we had India by the horns and should have really finished it off. If we’re being hard on ourselves, which we should be, we should have finished that game off.”After the eight-wicket pounding against Pakistan on Sunday, Rath had said his side would’ve benefitted from playing tougher opponents in the build-up to the tournament. On Tuesday, he elaborated on the need to follow the Afghanistan model to ensure the development of Associate teams.”I think it’s more exposure to high level cricket,” he said, when asked about what they needed. “You look at Afghanistan as a prime example. Back from 2011-2015, they were performing like us, upsetting the odd teams but going through a string of performances where they were getting bowled out for 140-150 on good decks, just like we did against Pakistan.”But with the right backing, they started getting better and better, they started training a lot harder, became fully contracted with professionalism coming. Now they’re pretty much about to top group B. That’s something that lacks in Associates – the exposure to high level of cricket and today we proved we’re capable of it, and a lot of teams are. Look at Scotland at the World Cup qualifiers, they narrowly missed out. We just need that recognition.”For three hours, India were stretched as Hong Kong batted without any fear and inhibition. Rath and Nizakat raised a 174-run opening stand to leave them needing 112 off the last 16 overs with all wickets intact. “When [we] restricted India to 285, we knew, it was a good batting deck. They have the bowlers, but we knew 280-odd was just above par,” Rath said. “We had the batting firepower, had nothing to lose so I said ‘it’s game on here’.”But the batsmen were starting to cramp, and spinners failed to exerted the kind of control MS Dhoni expected of them earlier in the innings. “I mean when me and Kat (Nizakat) were out there, I could tell the Indian players were getting a little anxious,” Rath said. “Shikhar walked past Dhoni and said ‘280 may not be enough here. We should have scored 350.’ They’re heroes, aren’t they? The respect we’ve earned is commendable, and we’re just really happy. It’s a bittersweet feeling, we should’ve finished that game.”It was a confidence thing, you look at the way we batted against Pakistan and we were timid, a bit rigid, sort of ‘oh my god, we’re playing Pakistan.’ Here after our bowling performance, restricting India to 280 when they should’ve got 330-340 gave us a confidence boost. We said if we give it a good crack, we could chase it, but we narrowly missed out.”As things stand, Hong Kong’s ODI status will be taken away from them immediately, leaving their future in limbo. The ICC is set to meet in Madrid next month to decide the way forward for Associates, but there’s nothing pencilled in for the immediate future. This leaves a huge void for players to fill. It’s this uncertainty Rath hoped would end sooner than later.”Of course, we don’t know what the ICC have planned for us. Hopefully this performance helps,” he said. “The next three-four years will be quiet for us, going into a rebuilding phase, but hopefully the ICC recognise that Associate cricket has got a lot better and we proved that today.”

Liverpool news: Reds eye move to sign "amazing" attacking maestro for Klopp

Liverpool are battling one of their Premier League rivals for the signing of an "amazing" attacking maestro, according to a fresh transfer update.

Liverpool transfer latest

The January transfer window will offer the Reds the opportunity to make further additions to their squad, should Jurgen Klopp feel the need to bolster his options. Liverpool are looking primed for a potential Premier League title race, with Saturday's 2-0 win at home to Everton in the Merseyside derby another step in the right direction, and a few extra sprinklings of brilliance could make them even more formidable.

The Reds, and by extension owners FSG, have been linked with a number of players recently, from Jamal Musiala to Manu Kone, both of which represent exciting pieces of Liverpool transfer news, and although the latter could be a great addition, it would be a surprise if the midfield was focused on over other areas of the pitch.

With Mohamed Salah on Africa Cup of Nations duty early next year, it could be that Klopp also eyes up another attacker to bring in, especially if there is the threat of the Egyptian departing Anfield at the end of the season. A new update suggests that Liverpool are looking to Serie A for a possible signing.

Liverpool eyeing Nico Gonzalez

According to a fresh claim from Calciomercato [via Sport Witness] Nico Gonzalez to Liverpool is a transfer that could come to fruition, with the Fiorentina winger seen as a strong option by the Reds. The 25-year-old is believed to be a "popular target" with a number of English clubs, with Chelsea mentioned in the report as one of those interested in him. Liverpool have also sent scouts to watch him in action on "several occasions", further adding fuel to the fire, with Fiorentina possibly wanting around €60m (£52m) for his services.

Gonzalez has grown into a formidable player at Fiorentina since arriving at the club from VfB Stuttgart back in 2021, proving to be a regular supplier of end product in the final third and being called "amazing" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

When you look at Gonzalez's stats, they highlight his consistency, with 29 goals coming his way in 92 appearances, and 16 assists also registered. Five goals in six Serie A starts have already been netted this season, with the Argentine predominantly taking up a right-sided attacking role.

Liverpool could see the Fiorentina ace as a good backup for Salah, and someone who can immediately fill in for him when he heads off to AFCON duty in January. As mentioned above, it may be that the Reds are lining him up as the legendary attacker's long-term replacement on Merseyside.

Being the successor to Salah is going to be an almost impossible job for whoever does become that man at some point in the future, but Gonzalez has the attributes to suit Klopp's style of play, combining quick feet, strong finishing a good work ethic out of possession. At 25, you could say he is also coming into his prime, meaning he could be an intriguing addition to the Klopp 2.0 era that is currently happening at Anfield.

Luke Fletcher's career-best keeps defending champions Nottinghamshire alive

ScorecardNottinghamshire held their nerve to defeat Worcestershire at Trent Bridge and keep alive their hopes of retaining the Royal London One-Day Cup.Defending a sub-par total of 202, the home side bowled out Worcestershire for only 164, to pull off an unlikely victory by 38 runs.Luke Fletcher led the way with the ball, returning career best figures of 4 for 20 as the visitors were bowled out in 47.2 overs.Daryl Mitchell made 62 in the chase but far too many of his team-mates gifted their wickets away, as the defending champions kept a tight grip on the run-rate.The loss was particularly hard on Moeen Ali, who also had his best day with the ball, with figures of 4 for 33 as Notts were bowled out for only 202 in 45.1 overs.Riki Wessels, with 50, top-scored for the holders, who faced elimination had they been defeated. Alex Hales, playing his first match of the season for his home county, after returning from IPL duty, made just 21.Defending such a modest target the home side needed to make early inroads and were indebted to early bursts from Fletcher and Jake Ball which reduced Worcestershire to 21 for 3.Ball cleaned up Moeen with a candidate for ‘delivery of the day’ whilst Fletcher removed Joe Clarke and Callum Ferguson, who only made 6 after his 192 against Leicestershire on Tuesday.Mitchell remained defiant, whilst partners came and went at the other end. Matt Carter followed up his four-wicket haul on debut this week, with the scalp of Ben Cox and fellow spinner Chris Nash picked up his first Notts wicket by having Ross Whiteley caught at mid-off.Whilst Mitchell was at the crease Worcestershire appeared to be favourites but their hopes evaporated when he tamely chipped Steven Mullaney to midwicket.Ed Barnard made 36 towards the back end of the innings but was last out, when bowled by Samit Patel.Earlier, Notts struggled to build any momentum under cloudy skies. Openers Wessels and Hales added 44 from the opening Powerplay overs but were then separated by Barnard, as the England international chopped on.Moeen’s first two victims fell in identical fashion after sharing in a third wicket partnership of 63. Wessels reached his 50 from 51 deliveries but fell a ball later, bottom-edging onto his stumps and Ross Taylor did the same, after making 47.Pace off the ball continued to work for Worcestershire, with Brett D’Oliveira removing Patel and Mullaney in the same over during an excellent spell of 2 for 46.Notts, normally a free-scoring side, failed to hit a single six during their innings and a youthful tail was unable to bail out the top order, with the final five wickets falling for only 38.Mitchell also picked up two late wickets as the home side’s innings ended 29 balls early.Worcestershire, who lost at the semi-final stage a year ago, now have eight points from six matches, whilst Notts have moved on to seven, from the same number of matches.
