Shikhar Dhawan to lead India on limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka

Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Rana, K Gowtham and Chetan Sakariya have all received maiden call-ups to the national team, figuring in the 20-man India squad for the white-ball series in Sri Lanka, scheduled for July. The second-string squad – the main team will be in England at the time – will be captained by opening batter Shikhar Dhawan, who has never led India previously, and have fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar as the vice-captain.India’s Sri Lanka tour comprises six matches: three ODIs (on July 13, 16 and 18), followed by three T20Is (July 21, 23, 25). Former India captain Rahul Dravid has been confirmed as the head coach for the tour, although the BCCI did not announce the entire roster of support staff on Thursday when it made public details of the squad, which will have five reserve bowlers.India will have to field a team in Sri Lanka shorn of its premier players because the main squad, captained by Virat Kohli, is currently in England getting ready for the inaugural World Test Championship final against New Zealand (June 18 onwards), followed by a five-Test series against England starting in August. That makes this the first instance of two senior Indian men’s teams operating simultaneously in bilateral series. It is no surprise that four of the five uncapped players – Gowtham the exception – all made strong impressions in the last two seasons of the IPL. Padikkal and Gaikwad have been successful as openers at the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Chennai Super Kings respectively, while Rana has been a regular in the top order at the Kolkata Knight Riders for a few seasons, and pacer Sakariya made an impressive start to his stint with the Rajasthan Royals in the truncated 2021 edition.Padikkal became the first Indian to hit four consecutive List A centuries, while opening for Karnataka during the Indian domestic Vijay Hazare 50-over tournament this year. Padikkal, who made his IPL debut with the Royal Challengers in IPL 2020, has 668 runs in 21 IPL matches at an average of 33.40 and a strike rate of 131.75.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Gaikwad, who has a healthy average of 47.87 in List A cricket, has scored five half-centuries in 13 IPL matches. As for Rana, the Knight Riders’ regular, he has 13 fifties in the IPL and a total of 1638 runs. He also has three centuries in List A cricket for Delhi in the domestic circuit.Probably the biggest surprise in the squad, though, is Sakariya. The left-arm fast bowler from Saurashtra was bought by the Royals in the auction before the 2021 IPL for INR 1.2 crore (USD 164,000 approx.), which proved to be an inspired investment. Sakariya, 23, has picked up seven wickets in seven IPL matches so far, and his victims include MS Dhoni, KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu and Rana. The India call-up is bound to be a bittersweet moment for Sakariya, who lost his father to Covid-19 immediately after he returned home once the IPL had been suspended indefinitely in early May.For 32-year-old Gowtham, too, the India call-up means a step up from the fringes. He was included as a reserve bowler during the four-match home Test series against England recently and, during that series, he captured the headlines when he became the most expensive uncapped Indian player in the IPL when the Super Kings paid INR 9.25 crore (US$ 1,273,000 approx.) for him, beating bids from the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Knight Riders. In the 2020 IPL, too, Gowtham had bagged a massive sum from the Punjab Kings (then Kings XI Punjab), who released him after the season after fielding him in just two matches. Gowtham has 57 wickets in 35 List A matches for Karnataka and has a batting strike rate of 141.26 in List A and 159.24 in T20s respectively. The squad also features spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who has been picked for the third time by the selectors since the 2020 IPL. Chakravarthy, who plays for the Knight Riders, had been selected for the T20I series in Australia last year but did not travel because of a shoulder injury, and was again picked for the home T20I series against England earlier this year, but failed to clear the mandatory fitness test. The pair of Shreyas Iyer and T Natarajan were not considered for selection as they are both still recovering from surgeries. Iyer had hurt his shoulder during the ODI series against England and had undergone surgery in April, which had ruled him out of the IPL. Natarajan, who made a fairy-tale debut in Australia in all three formats at the turn of the year, had to abandon the IPL to undergo knee surgery.Squad: Shikhar Dhawan (capt), Bhuvneshwar Kumar (vice-capt), Prithvi Shaw, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Suryakumar Yadav, Manish Pandey, Hardik Pandya, Nitish Rana, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Yuzvendra Chahal, Rahul Chahar, K Gowtham, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini, Chetan SakariyaNet bowlers: Ishan Porel, Sandeep Warrier, Arshdeep Singh, R Sai Kishore, Simarjeet Singh

United face Arsenal in midweek before they take on Nottingham Forest, the league's surprise package, at the weekend.

Imagine him & Ozoh: Derby could sign "unique" star who wants the move

Derby County fans only have one more day to wait until they're able to watch their beloved Rams play Championship football once more, with Paul Warne's men travelling to John Eustace's Blackburn Rovers for a Friday night affair at Ewood Park.

Warne will still be itching to get more bodies in through the door between now and the close of the month though, with a real position of worry for the Rams coming in between the sticks, as a move for lofty Swedish goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström continues to be delayed.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

The ex-Rotherham United manager could well also want to improve the forwards he has at his disposal heading into the tougher league, with this tricky attacker on the agenda of the newly promoted outfit once more.

Derby determined to snap up former EFL ace

Last weekend journalist Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, reported that Derby are very much keen on a move for Brest winger Karamoko Dembele this summer, and could have an upper hand now in their pursuit of the enigmatic forward.

Dembele, according to Nixon, fancies a move to the second tier over a switch anywhere further down the EFL, which doesn't bode well for Birmingham City, who are known to be another interested party alongside the Rams.

Derby County target Karamoko Dembele in action for Blackpool.

What Dembele can offer alongside Ozoh

Starring out on loan in the third tier last season with Blackpool, before heading back to France, Warne and Co would love to be able to win his services, knowing how slippery he can be on the ball when bombing forward at opposition defenders.

Derby would reportedly be able to snap Dembele up on a permanent basis too, and based on his pre-season performances before the bread and butter of Championship football finally kicks into gear, the diminutive forward could star in his new location partnered alongside Crystal Palace loanee David Ozoh.

The promising 19-year-old central midfielder would pop up with a strike in Derby's final pre-season fixture against Real Valladolid, to help his new loan employers to a 2-1 victory, which could mean he has laid down a significant marker for a starting spot against the Riversiders tomorrow night.

At youth level for Oliver Glasner's Eagles, Ozoh has shone too, with four goals and three assists managed from a combined total of 68 games in and around the U18s and U21s.

Dembele will know very well the importance of having a formative loan spell away from your parent club, with his time at Blackpool last campaign in League One finally seeing him live up to the hype that came his way when he was a wide-eyed kid at Celtic, with eight goals and 13 assists tallied up from 39 league games.

Described as "unique" in the way he goes about playing his football by his ex-Tangerines manager Neil Critchley, with a constant focus on entertaining onlookers with dazzling displays, Dembele might well become a fan's favourite at Pride Park if he does sign on the dotted line, with Warne's style of football known to be more attritional at times than free-flowing.

Signings such as Dembele entering into the building could further help Derby in their quest to at least stay up next season in the Championship, as Warne aims to build an exciting squad that can take on the second tier and succeed, rather than sinking back down to the murky depths of League One.

Chris Gayle set for West Indies T20I return

Gayle has interrupted a stint with Quetta Gladiators to return to the Caribbean

Osman Samiuddin23-Feb-2021Chris Gayle is expected to return to West Indies’ T20I squad for the first time in two years, when the side takes on the visiting Sri Lankans at the start of March. West Indies will announce a squad later this week but Gayle has interrupted a stint with the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL to return to the Caribbean, having been given indications that he will feature in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. As with the other members, Gayle will undergo a fitness assessment before the final squad is named. If he does play, it will be the first time he has represented West Indies in any format since August 2019, when he played an ODI against India; it will be exactly two years to the day since he last played a T20 international, against England in March 2019.Gayle is scheduled to return to Pakistan for the remainder of the PSL after the last T20I, on March 7 – an arrangement that had been agreed upon after the draft but before the season began. In fact, the PSL had announced just before the season that Faf du Plessis would be a partial replacement for Gayle just before the season began, though they did not specify why such cover was needed. But this recall, under the captaincy of Kieron Pollard, marks a significant milestone in Gayle’s career, as well as for West Indies, coming as it does in a year in which they will be preparing to defend their T20 world title. That tournament is due to take place in India in October-November, West Indies having won the last edition of the tournament also in India, in 2016.At 41, Gayle’s future – international and otherwise – has been the subject of on-off discussion since the 2019 World Cup. Prior to the event, he had said the World Cup would be his last ODI cricket, though he reversed the decision during the tournament itself. He then turned out for the ODIs against India after the tournament, blasted a 41-ball 72 before walking off – to handshakes from opponents and applause from fans – as if it was his last game for West Indies. He took a brief break from all cricket at the end of that year but upon his return in January 2020 at the Bangladesh Premier League, said he was still open for a return for West Indies – also joking that he might continue playing till he was 45. If he does play at the T20 World Cup, he will be 42.Though the announcement of du Plessis as cover hinted at a return, the actual reasons for Gayle flying back were revealed, inadvertently*, in a PCB press release after his 68 (off 40 balls) against Lahore Qalandars failed to prevent a nine-wicket defeat. Gayle has batted at one down for Quetta and scored 39 off 24 balls in the first game, another loss to Karachi Kings. Chatting to Gayle on his experience of returning to Pakistan after 14 years, the release said that Gayle “will leave shortly to feature in the West Indies’ T20I against Sri Lanka back home.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Khel Shel (@khelshel)

This was Gayle’s first cricket in Pakistan since touring with West Indies in 2006-07 and he was, he said, feeling “blessed” to be playing at all during a pandemic.”Playing during this particular time is a blessing. Hopefully, things can get better in the future.”When you look at what’s happening in the world there are no fans in the stadiums and people have to watch [cricket] on television. It is something people and players look back and say we have to appreciate times when we actually had good things and not take them for granted.”Things are tough with the world in pause. We must not take life for granted when things can open. We’re going to try to live the best life and live it to the fullest, spend more time with family and friends and reach out to the people a lot more.”Gayle hoped cricket will resume in full soon.”I am sure players are still hungry for it. “It is our livelihood, it is our job, our earning and that is what we know.”

The Arsenal boss was upset when Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar had stopped a dangerous counter-attack with a tactical foul and began to have words with his opposite numbers in the Newcastle technical area. Arteta and Eddie Howe's assistant came close to one another, shouting in each other's direction, and had to be separated by the fourth official. It was a moment in which Arsenal and Arteta's frustration on a difficult afternoon reached a climax.

    WHAT ARTETA SAID

Arteta was rather mild-mannered in his reflections after the game compared to last season. A year ago, the Spanish boss, lamented the decision to award Newcastle's controversial winning goal. He said: "Embarrassing what happened – how this goal stands, in the Premier League – this league we say is the best in the world.

"When we're not good enough I hold my hands up and take responsibility.

"It's not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this."

However, this year, the Gunners boss could have no complaints for the officiating and offered a short reflection. He said: "We expect every opponent has their qualities and characteristics and they’re really good at what they do."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal were not good enough against Newcastle and struggled to assert themselves throughout the game. A fantastic Alexander Isak header from an equally impressive Anthony Gordon cross was enough for the Magpies to earn back-to-back 1-0 home wins against the Gunners. Arsenal are now three games without a win in the Premier League and have slipped seven points behind Liverpool.

Talk of Osimhen's future has continued to make headlines this season, with speculation claiming he could move on to Arsenal, Chelsea or even Bayern Munich. The striker has claimed he is still "worth more than €100 million", which may be bad news for Galatasaray and their attempts to secure his future.

Celtic could land Hatate alternative in swoop for "tenacious" SPFL star

Celtic ended their 2023/24 campaign on a high last month as they won the SFA Cup thanks to a 90th-minute strike from Adam Idah at Hampden Park.

The Hoops beat their local rivals to secure the trophy and ensure that they came away from the season with two pieces of silverware added to the cabinet, having lifted the Scottish Premiership title the previous weekend.

Brendan Rodgers, however, may look for progress on the continent as his team were knocked out of the Champions League in the group stages.

The Bhoys finished rock bottom of their group, which included Feyenoord, Lazio, and Atletico Madrid, with one win in six games and may pursue more success next term.

Rodgers could use the summer transfer window, which officially opened for business on Friday, to bolster his squad and add more quality options across the park to compete in all competitions.

Central midfield is one area that could do with further additions after Reo Hatate endured an injury-ravaged season, and the Hoops are already reportedly looking at an impressive SPFL midfielder.

Celtic's interest in signing SPFL maestro

It was recently reported by Sky Sports that the Scottish giants are interested in excellent Dundee central midfielder Luke McCowan ahead of next term.

The outlet stated that Rodgers' side have been tracking the left-footed star's progress with the Premiership side, ahead of a potential swoop for his services.

His current contract with Dundee is due to expire at the end of the 2024/25 campaign and it remains to be seen whether or not he will put pen to paper on an extension.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers applauds the fans.

This means that the current transfer window could be their last chance to cash in on the 26-year-old maestro before they lose him for nothing next year, which could open the door for Celtic to swoop in and secure a deal.

Sky Sports also claimed that the Hoops are in talks with Portuguese giants Benfica over a deal to sign Paulo Bernardo on a permanent basis after his loan spell.

They currently have an option to sign him for £6m but are trying to renegotiate to bring him back to Parkhead for a fee in the region of £3.5m this summer.

With McCowan, though, Rodgers could land a dream alternative to Hatate in the middle of the park to compete with the Japanese midfielder, or to play in his place if the injury issues continue into next season.

Reo Hatate's injury-ravaged season for Celtic

The 26-year-old dynamo came into this term off the back of 32 appearances in the Scottish Premiership in Ange Postecoglou's last year with the club.

His campaign was almost immediately disrupted by a calf injury that was sustained on the 13th of August, which kept him out of action for six matches for club and country.

Hatate then suffered a hamstring issue in October that ruled him out of 20 games for Celtic and Japan combined, with his return coming in January.

However, just a few weeks after his return at the start of the year, the central midfielder suffered another calf injury on international duty and missed 14 more matches.

This means that the right-footed ace was out injured for a whopping 40 games during the 2023/24 campaign for club and country combined, which severely limited his impact on the pitch for the Bhoys.

As you can see in the table above, Hatate only made 12 starts in the Premiership and that meant that he did not have a telling say in the title race over the course of the season.

However, the impressive ace did contribute with seven direct goal involvements in those 12 starts, which speaks to the quality he can provide in the final third when fit and available to play.

That is why Rodgers will surely be hoping that the midfield whiz can avoid another injury-ravaged year next term, as the Japan international could be a huge player for the Scottish giants if he is available week-in-week-out.

If his injury issues do persist, though, then the Hoops will need an adequate alternative who can step in and chip in at the top end of the pitch from a midfield position, which is why McCowan could be a fantastic signing for the club.

Why Luke McCowan is a dream Reo Hatate alternative

Firstly, Celtic may not have to break the bank to bring him to Parkhead due to his contractual situation and him currently playing in the SPFL.

He is not playing in a major European league and his contract does not have years left to run, which could allow the Bhoys to snap him up for a reasonable price – making him an ideal addition to provide depth in the squad.

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.

Secondly, McCowan is in the peak years of his career at the age of 26 and has proven himself in the Premiership. This suggests that he could hit the ground running and make an immediate impact, whilst still having plenty of years of service left to give to the Hoops.

His performances on the pitch for Dundee during the 2023/24 campaign also indicate that the quality is there for him to be a dream alternative to Hatate in terms of what they offer in a central midfield position.

If you compare his form in the top-flight this season with the Japanese maestro's displays for Celtic when he was fit for the majority of the previous term, McCowan appears to be an excellent target for the club to bring in as an alternative option.

As you can see in the table above, both midfielders provide quality as scorers and creators of goals from the middle of the park, and do so at a similar rate.

They also both get stuck in to win possession back through tackles and interceptions, with the Dundee star, who was dubbed "tenacious" by writer Kai Watson, potentially being able to offer more in that respect.

Bayern Munich were dealt a major injury setback moments before kick-off as Manuel Neuer felt some discomfort in his thigh during warm-up. Vincent Kompany immediately replaced the veteran goalkeeper with Sven Ulreich in the starting lineup.

The visitors broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute through Olise's strike, who converted a simple tap-in from Kane's assist. Nine minutes later, the former Crystal Palace star set up Jamal Musiala after a brilliant solo effort inside the Werder Bremen penalty box. Olise cut in from the right side and then dribbled past three defenders before squaring the ball towards Musiala in front of goal and the German doubled the team's lead.

Kane got his name on the scoresheet within 12 minutes from the start of the second half as he scored a milestone goal from Olise's assist. The forward became the highest-scoring English player in the league's history, surpassing Jadon Sancho's tally of 40 goals.

In the next eight minutes, Olise completed his brace while Gnabry netted a fifth goal as Kompany's side registered their 20th goal across all competitions in the past seven days, taking their overall tally to 29 goals after just six matches into the 2024-25 season.

New Bayern signing Olise stole the show with a double and a couple of assists as he spearheaded the team's dominant performance. The 22-year-old has taken German football by storm having already scored five times in six appearances across all competitions.

Bremen's defenders had a forgetful outing on Saturday as they were unable to contain the lethal Bayern attackers who have now scored 20 goals in the last seven days. The backline looked clueless, especially in the second half where they got toyed by the Kane-led attack.
