It is understood that interim head coach Rumesh Ratnayake will also be on tour to help with the transition.Pakistan removed Arthur as head coach after the World Cup following a string of poor results, but the team also achieved some notable highs during his tenure, including winning the 2017 Champions Trophy and gaining the No. 1 ranking in Tests, albeit briefly, and in T20Is.Flower joins Arthur’s backroom staff having vacated the head coach role at Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) side Rangpur Rangers. Flower has a working relationship with Arthur, having worked with him as Pakistan’s batting coach before he too was let go earlier this year.Saker has worked as bowling coach for both England and Australia over the last ten years, before he took up the role of bowling coach with USA earlier this year – one he has now left.McDermott was the first of the four new appointments to have come on board, with SLC securing his contract earlier this month on the recommendation of Cricket Australia. He had earlier served as the South Australia Cricket Association’s high-performance coach.Despite the new appointments, however, previous Sri Lanka head coach Chandika Hathurusingha remains contracted with SLC.

Vikram Rathour set to replace Sanjay Bangar as batting coach

Bowling coach B Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar are going to retain their positions for another two years

India support staff interviews done in fair manner – chief selector MSK Prasad

Former India batsman and selector Vikram Rathour is all set to replace Sanjay Bangar as the new batting coach of the senior men’s team, with only formalities left to be completed. However, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach R Sridhar will retain their positions for another two years. India’s selection panel, led by MSK Prasad, shortlisted three candidates each for all the support staff positions with Rathour, Arun and Sridhar leading their respective lists in “order of priority” as “unanimous” choices, and will be officially appointed after formalities, barring any conflict-of-interest possibilities. The two other candidates shortlisted in each category were Bangar and former England batsman Mark Ramprakash for batting coach, Paras Mhambrey and Venkatesh Prasad for bowling coach, and Abhay Sharma and T Dilip for fielding coach. These men, barring Ramprakash, will work with the ‘A’ team, and at times at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. The support staff will be appointed for a period of two years, starting with the home series against South Africa in September and lasting till the T20 World Cup in 2021.Prasad did not give a specific reason why only Bangar was being replaced in the support staff. “In the last five years, there is definitely some amount of improvement. Looking ahead, with the Test Championship coming up and two T20 World Cups, we thought that there should be freshness in the department,” Prasad explained. “That’s the reason why we went ahead with Vikram Rathour as first choice.”He was the director of HPCA [Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association], he was also the coach of Punjab Cricket Association, he was also an assistant coach with Kings XI Punjab, so he’s got enough experience behind him. Apart from that, he has been doing a lot of assignments with the National Cricket Academy, so we are convinced with his skill-sets and we thought that he’d be our first preference.”Associated Press

That Rathour is the brother-in-law of former India offspinner and current Under-19 selector Aashish Kapoor also came up as a possible conflict-of-interest possibility but BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri clarified that there were no such issues.”This was discussed at the CoA meeting also because the CoA was presented with the shortlist,” Johri said. “Now, his brother-in-law is the selector of the Under-19 junior committee, and this is the batting coach of the men’s senior team, so we do not think there’s any conflict of interest.”A total of 14 candidates were interviewed for batting coach, 12 for bowling coach, nine for fielding coach, 16 for physiotherapist, 12 for strength and conditioning coach, and 24 for administrative manager. All the interviews for the above positions took place in Mumbai from Monday to Thursday. When asked, Prasad said that the team management and two Cricket Advisory Committee members – Kapil Dev and Anshuman Gaekwad – were also asked for their views for the support staff positions but the selection committee took the final decisions on its own “in a fair manner”. Prasad, however, suggested that going ahead, officially involving the CAC chairman could be helpful in picking the support staff. “The CAC chairman will definitely add value because they’ve conducted the interview for the head coach so there will be continuity and consistency,” he said.Among the selectors, Prasad, Sarandeep Singh, Gagan Khoda and Jatin Paranjape were present in person, while Devang Gandhi attended via video conference from the West Indies while conducting the interviews. The candidates shortlisted for the post of physiotherapist were Nitin Patel, Andrew Leipus and Vaibhav Daga, and the three finalised for the post of administrative manager were Girish Dongre, Venkatesh Rajagopalan and Anand Yalvigi. The selection panel also decided to call the following candidates for a second round of interviews for the post of strength and conditioning coach: Luke Woodhouse, Grant Luden, Rajnikanth Sivagnanam, Nick Webb and Anand Date. The contracts of head coach Ravi Shastri and the entire support staff had expired after the World Cup before they got a temporary extension for the ongoing tour of the West Indies and the USA. Shastri was then reappointed for a two-year period earlier this month by the CAC and the selection panel was tasked with appointing the support staff.

Chelsea in ongoing talks to sign Karim Benzema with Todd Boehly excited

Chelsea have been heavily linked with a January move for Karim Benzema, and a new update has suggested that the Blues are now in talks.

Chelsea's search for a new striker

Mauricio Pochettino’s side once again showcased their struggles in front of goal on Friday evening, drawing 0-0 with Aston Villa in the FA Cup.

The Blues and Todd Boehly are yet to complete any incoming business this month but have been heavily linked with a move for a new striker, including marquee names such as Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres. Chelsea are thought to be in pole position to sign Osimhen in the summer, whereas a big-money bid for Gyokeres was turned down earlier this month.

Therefore, for the remainder of the season, Chelsea could look at short-term solutions in the final third to rival Nicolas Jackson, should Armando Broja leave Stamford Bridge. Four forwards that have been offered to Chelsea this month have been AZ Alkmaar’s Vangelis Pavlidis, Zenit St Petersburg’s Mateo Cassierra, Cercle Brugge’s Kevin Denkey and Atletico Mineiro’s Paulinho, whereas Benzema has also been mentioned as a target.

Recent updates in the week said that Chelsea were set to make contact with Benzema, and it looks as if that has materialised.

Chelsea in Karim Benzema talks

According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea talks over a move or Benzema are ongoing, and ‘a number of connections have suggested that the opportunity to bring in someone like the 36-year-old is something that really excites the owners’, and by extension Boehly.

The report adds that Benzema’s team are ‘in constant communication with Chelsea’ and that ‘all avenues have been discussed’, even though 'his wages are problematic'.

Benzema only made the move to Saudi Arabia in the summer, joining Al-Ittihad after leaving Real Madrid. As to be expected, the 36-year-old has continued to shine in front of goal, so he could be the perfect option for the Blues as they look to make a later surge up the Premier League table, while also looking to lift both domestic cup titles.

Benzema has also been praised in the past, with football talent scout Jacek Kulig saying:

It looks as if a high-profile deal could be one to keep an eye on in the final days of the window, although any move could be dependent on Broja’s future.

‘Pedal to the metal!’ – Trinity Rodman explains why USWNT will go full throttle under former Chelsea boss Emma Hayes

  • Have Olympic gold medal bid to come
  • Proven winner calling the shots as coach
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Having briefly slipped into reverse at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the United States are looking to move through the gears once more. The current calendar year has already been a productive one, with W Gold Cup and SheBelieves Cup glory savoured, and there is a gold medal bid to come at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

    WHAT RODMAN SAID

Former Chelsea boss Hayes is now calling the shots ahead of a trip to Paris, as she settles into the most demanding of roles, and Rodman is looking forward to working with a proven winner. She has told : “I just had known of her accomplishments and how great she was, and heard through other people, how successful and how good she is also just as a person … So I was really happy. I think the growth of the game and also having more women in this sport, I think is really cool. I’m very open minded and excited about the future and what there is to come with her, because we haven’t even scratched the surface I don’t think, and when she comes in I think it’s going to be pedal to the metal for sure.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodman has helped to get the USWNT back on the trophy trail, with the general consensus being that they have benefited as a collective from seeing a global crown snatched from their heads. Rodman added: “For us younger players in the World Cup that played a lot, like me and Soph [Smith], and [Emily] Fox and Naomi [Girma] … it tested us a lot. As a team you [have] got to figure out what’s going wrong quickly and we didn’t do that in the World Cup. So for me, I don’t look back at it in a bad way any more. I think I did closer to the loss and being sent home. But now I look at it happily, just because it was a great learning experience.”

    WHAT NEXT?

Rodman is now accustomed to performing under pressure – a trait she appears to have inherited from her NBA legend father Dennis, who once played alongside Michael Jordan at the Chicago Bulls – and she will have an important role to play under Hayes despite being just 22 years of age.

Smith, Warner ready to 'face the fire' on Australia comebacks – Langer

Australia coach delighted to have Steven Smith and David Warner back ahead of World Cup and Ashes in England

Melinda Farrell18-May-2019As Australia commenced their World Cup preparations on English soil, coach Justin Langer admitted the personal welfare of Steven Smith and David Warner would require sensitive monitoring and handling over the coming months. The two players joined in the centre wicket practice at Whitgift School, in the suburbs of south London, with a small media contingent and a few dozen fans, mainly children in whites, sat on the grassy banks. It was a quiet and even genteel start to a gruelling four-month tour that will incorporate World Cup and Ashes campaigns and Langer knows more hostile crowds and greater scrutiny will greet Smith and Warner now they have served the bans handed to them in the wake of last year’s Cape Town ball tampering affair.”Well we can’t control the crowd,” Langer said. “What I do know? It may ramp up, it may heat up, but it won’t be any hotter than it was 12 months ago. I’ve never seen anything like it so the boys are very well prepared. They’ve paid a heavy price and we’re expecting always to come here and to face the fire and we’re ready for that.”What we’ve got to understand is that they’re human beings as well. There’s not too many I’ve met in my life who like being booed or heckled or disliked so… they’re human beings. We’re going to have to care for them, we’re going to have to put an arm around them and make sure they’re going okay. But what people say, whether it’s in the crowd or social media or wherever, there’s nothing they can do about that, they can’t control it but what we can do is keep an eye on them and make sure they’re going okay as people as much as cricketers.”ALSO READ: Finch ponders tactics to counter run-festsSteven Smith bats during Australia training•Cricket Network

Aside from the expected questions from the media there was little evidence of any lasting effects of a turbulent 12-month period, punctuated by severe recriminations and introspection throughout Australian professional cricket. But Langer suggested both players have shown an understandable eagerness to finally put their exile behind them, from their return to the squad for warm-ups against New Zealand to the squad’s visit to the World War One battlefields of Gallipoli, where they broke their journey to England.”Dave’s got that look on his eye, he’s really hungry, he’s a great player as we all know, he’s so dynamic, he brings so much energy, and that’s what we ask from our players, Langer said. “You watch Glenn Maxwell field or bowl or bat – he brings the energy. Dave Warner always brings energy to the contest. It’s really nice to have him back.””I watched Steve Smith batting against New Zealand in those three practice games, he’s literally a master of the game, so it’s nice to have him back. It’s been hilarious for me because whether on the ANZAC cove or in the lunch room or we’re in the bus playing cards, he’s just shadow batting the whole time. He’s literally – he loves batting, he’s shadow batting on the sand, he’s shadow batting in the shower – I’m not joking. You should see him, he just loves batting. From that point it’s great to have him back.”From a broader perspective, it’s nice to have them back as well, they’ve had 12 months to have a good think about a mistake they and the team made. I’m sure they’ll be better people for that.”Aside from his surprising knowledge of Smith’s daily ablutions, Langer believes both players are physically ready as they continue to progress from elbow surgeries earlier this year, although he admitted they are still at partially restricted in the field.”They both fielded in the three [World Cup warm-up] games against New Zealand. Steve’s in literally career best shape. I mean you just saw a 2K time trial, he’s in great shape and Dave Warner is always elite fit. So in terms of their throwing, they’re building it up. Where they’ve come from, from surgery, I’m really proud of them and they’re up and running. Are they going to throw like Andrew Symonds or Ricky Ponting? Probably not at the moment but they’re certainly working towards that.”Last week in Brisbane, [Smith] batted beautifully, he played an unbelievable shot off Nathan Coulter-Nile there – it was like watching Sachin [Tendulkar] bat. He’s in pretty good shape I think.”Steven Smith, Justin Langer and David Warner during the Australia World Cup squad’s trip to Gallipoli•Cricket Australia

Of greater concern to Langer is the task of getting his side prepared for their first World Cup match against Afghanistan in Bristol, the reason for their match scenario practice, which saw bowlers asked to simulate specific stages of an innings. After a difficult home summer, Australia embarked on an eight-match winning streak in India and Pakistan and they now have two warm-up games in England to settle on a starting side. The main selection questions centre on how to fit Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja and Warner into the top three while Coulter-Nile appears to be favoured as the third seamer in an attack also featuring Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. The coaching staff will be bolstered by World Cup winners Ponting and Brad Haddin and, while England’s batting has dominated the local cricket headlines, Langer is adamant that Australia won’t be drawn in to changing their tactics.”We’ve been hearing it for 12 months. We’ve shown if we stick to the formula then we’ll have some success. It’s as simple as that. And when it comes to playing India and England it’s just like match play, we’re just going to have to compete harder and be ready for them. In terms of scores, a lot will have to do with the grounds we play on, the conditions, whether we’re chasing or setting, all those sorts of things but we’re really clear on the game plan. We showed in India and Dubai that, if we stick to it, we’ll score big enough scores to win games of cricket.”We love our cricket and we’ve been good at it. When everyone says we’ve got to start playing like England or start playing like New Zealand or start playing like India, no – we’ll keep playing like Australia because we’ve won four of the past five World Cups and that’s something to be proud of.”The boys are aware of it and we know if we stick to the Australian way of playing great cricket… history has shown we’ll be pretty good.”

Mia Enderby: Liverpool's Lauren Hemp-like teen on track to fulfil her dream of playing for the Lionesses

The England youth international had an excellent first season in the Women's Super League and looks sure to have a huge future

There are not too many better ways to announce yourself as one of the Lionesses’ hottest prospects than by flicking the ball over the head of an England legend to set yourself up for your first goal for a club like Liverpool. That’s exactly how Mia Enderby, the Reds’ 18-year-old starlet, marked her name out as one to remember this past season.

It was back in November that she received the ball while under pressure from Steph Houghton, captain of the Lionesses for seven years, only to twist and lift it beyond the veteran defender while on the turn. In an instant, she was in behind, her lightning pace leaving her opponent in her wake as she burst into the box and arrowed the ball into the far corner.

It might not have been a monumental goal in terms of the result, simply changing the scoreline from 4-2 to 4-3 in the dying embers of Liverpool’s Continental Cup defeat to Manchester City. But after shining in the second-tier with Sheffield United for two years, this felt like the moment Enderby caught the eye on a wider scale and put herself on many more maps across England.

The Lionesses have a lot of exciting young talent coming through the system right now, and a pathway prepared to help them to the top, but Enderby’s debut season in the Women’s Super League has only reinforced the idea that she is prime among them.

Simon Bellis / SportimageWhere it all began

Despite no one really influencing the passion, from the moment Enderby could walk, she wanted to play football. That love took her into a local boys’ team in her early childhood before she successfully trialled for Leeds United’s regional talent centre at Under-12s level.

Her breakthrough in the senior game, however, came a little further south with Sheffield United, in the FA Women’s Championship. The Blades have long been fantastic at developing and trusting in young talent, and Enderby benefited from that when she debuted for the club aged 16, having joined from Leeds. A year later – with another prodigious teenage winger, Lucy Watson, having been snapped up by Chelsea – she became a regular starter and a key player, scoring seven goals for a team that finished eighth in a league of 12.

AdvertisementLiverpool FCThe big break

Unsurprisingly, plenty of WSL clubs showed interest in Enderby and, last summer, Liverpool won the race to sign her. Manager Matt Beard has an excellent track record of trusting in young players and his plans for the 18-year-old’s development won her over instantly.

“When I first spoke to Beardy, I had a meeting with him and Russ [Fraser, managing director], he went through a whole PowerPoint of me. After the meeting I said to my mum and my agent straight away, 'I want to come here',” Enderby tells GOAL. “I feel like everything he said, how confident he was about me, after that, I just wanted to come here.”

It was a big step. It would be the teenager’s first move away from her home in Bradford, her first experience at a professional, full-time team and a jump up to one of the best leagues in the world. However, she’s adapted brilliantly.

“To be honest, when I first came here, I wasn't expecting minutes at all,” Enderby admits now. “I am grateful for the minutes that I am getting and I'm just trying to keep working hard in games, in training, to hopefully start every game. That's my aim. I'm really grateful for [Beard] to put his trust in me and give me the confidence that I can play a lot more minutes.”

How it's going

Enderby has certainly set about repaying that faith put in her. After a bit of bad luck with injuries in the first half of the season, she had a brilliant and consistent run at the end of the campaign in particular.

She’s not shied away from the big moments either. Her goal against Man City in the Conti Cup was a moment in which she really announced herself to a wider audience, while her starring role in Liverpool’s shock win over Chelsea really showcased her potential and growth all at once.

Enderby has also been a key player for England’s youth teams this season, helping to secure qualification for a UEFA U19 Women’s Championship that she’ll hope to thrive in later this summer.

When GOAL asks Beard what stood out when he first watched Enderby, he doesn’t hesitate to reel off so many of her best attributes. “She’s direct, can beat players, can score goals, can score all types of goals,” he replies immediately. The 18-year-old’s raw pace is certainly another big asset that helps make her a real threat to any defence, with Beard noting that Millie Bright and Jess Carter, two of England’s best defenders, were “terrified” of it when Liverpool faced Chelsea earlier this month.

As Enderby’s first season at the highest level ends, you can see where she has already made big strides with this experience, too. That’s certainly true of the physical side, with the player herself even believing she’s got faster in the past year, while the tactical element is another she’s developed well in.

“With any player, when you've not played professionally, it takes a little bit of time to cope with the demands of the tactical element,” Beard explains. “We have a set way of playing, but there's always weaknesses that we want to exploit so we will alter things throughout the week. We may have more than one way of playing, more than one system, so there's a lot of information that you need to take on throughout the week. She's adjusted to that really, really well. I think the great thing for me is you can see the understanding.”

But perhaps above all is Enderby’s attitude to work hard. She can still get frustrated at times on the pitch, and “be her own worst enemy” Beard notes, but to talk to the teenager is to understand that she has a drive and a desire to do the hard yards to reach the very top. “Literally ever since I could walk, I've always wanted to play football,” she says. “It was my dream to play in the WSL and represent my country at the senior level. I feel like I'm a step closer. I've just got to keep working hard so I can get there.”
