Just what can this Newcastle United side actually achieve?

Alan Pardew’s outstanding job of changing the fortunes of a team in a dead-end cycle and into a real competitor for a European finish in the Premier League has been great to watch. Even more so has been his insistence on bringing in players who can implement a much more attacking and impressive display on the pitch. The short-lived Premier League career in Newcastle of Andy Carroll might have left many fans with a feeling of great confusion and frustration at the direction of the club, but the work of Pardew to move the supporters and the club past that initial and necessary phase has amounted to a tremendous stamp on the Premier League.

Many Premier League fans should look to neighbouring France and the successes of the “lesser” clubs financially in recent seasons, or even the varying number of champions in Germany who, barring Bayern Munich, have assembled title-winning sides from transfer activity that could hardly be described as extravagant. But what about the Premier League? Is modern English football condemned to be in the hands of those who are financially equipped to spend their way to the top? Are Europe’s most impressive and desirable talents only available for figures upwards of £20 million?

The revolution at Newcastle certainly had something to say about all of that. The acquisitions by Pardew hardly caused much of a stir across Europe, but perhaps that helped. They have quietly and impressively assembled a group of players able to excite a football city and keep the crowds St James’ Park wanting more.

But it would be a tremendous shame if there was indeed a glass ceiling preventing Newcastle from catapulting themselves past Europa League football. It would absolutely be a stain on the Premier League if there were long term indications that the only way to succeed is if clubs spent heavily and unnecessarily.

The supreme talent of Yohan Cabaye deserves more than just a barely noticed display on Europe’s second stage. The attacking display and togetherness of Newcastle’s strikers Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba is one of the most impressive strike partnerships in the Premier League. And, importantly, the side’s best talent all have age on their side. With a few more shrewd moves in the transfer market and the need to keep their star players, is there much stopping a talented group of players working in harmony?

The powerful clubs ahead of Newcastle in the league would have something to say about an outsider trying to gatecrash the top four. But if last season were an indication of where the Premier League is headed, the top four may be up for grabs to more than just the usual suspects.

It’s worth noting that many clubs who make waves in sports do not just appear from out of nowhere, rather they’ve spent the recent preceding years assembling a squad capable of achieving results which may not be as far out of reach as many think.

What is good to see from Newcastle is that Alan Pardew has brought a great deal of stability to the club. There is also very little noise coming from players expressing a need to leave and establish themselves at a bigger club. Sure one or two may leave, but there is a necessity to address the financial aspect of running a successful club. As disheartening as it may be if Demba Ba, for example, were to leave, there is surely enough faith in Pardew to replace the striker and his goals.

At this stage, Newcastle are missing very few pieces across the team to sustain an assault on the top four in the Premier League. But, unlike many other nations in Europe, England has more than one club capable of financially out-muscling Newcastle in any aspect, as well as another group of clubs who have the history of finishing above them on a consistent basis.

The perceived glass ceiling may exist for clubs like Newcastle, who are strict with their financial commitments to players and who do understand the need to sell in order to move forward. But again, wouldn’t that just be damning to the Premier League?

What Newcastle can be proud of, however, is that they have manoeuvred themselves into the elite group of teams who are must-see on a weekly basis. Their current setup may not amount to much in terms of a genuine title-challenge with much more powerful clubs standing in their way, but the club are contributing greatly to the overall product of the Premier League. Newcastle are undoubtedly one of the front-runners for quality and excitement in English football.

Do Van der Vaart and Modric work together?

Watching Tottenham Hotspur last season, there were moments when you could see that accommodating Rafael Van der Vaart in the side had consequences. His desire to be on the ball and involved at all times was at odds with his advanced role in the team, sitting just off Peter Crouch. He would often, frustratingly, be seen in between the centre backs, picking the ball off their toes and playing a long ball out to the wings. This constant dropping off was unnecessary. Luka Modric and Tom Huddlestone were more than capable of starting Tottenham’s moves and Van der Vaart’s constant movement was at times more confusing than it was advantageous.

So, after a season, does Rafael Van der Vaart fit in Tottenham’s midfield? Can both Luka Modric’s and Van der Vaart’s creative styles work together? I think the answer is yes, if only Van der Vaart plays with slightly more positional discipline.

In the current starting eleven both players fit well, Modric controls possession and tempo in the centre of the pitch whilst Van der Vaart drops to link with him and flood central midfield but also pushes on to feed on Crouch’s knockdowns. The only time it doesn’t work is when Van der Vaart feels starved of the ball. Allowed a free reign by Redknapp, Van der Vaart upsets the balance when he gets impatient and starts attempting to do everything on his own. Whilst Modric plays the patient, percentage, possession game, Van der Vaart likes to move the ball forward quickly. It may be a contrast of styles but it is not a conflict, the two players compliment each other well and their respective styles are well balanced.

Had Tottenham possessed a front man who could put the ball in the net, the true quality of Modric and Van der Vaart as a creative force would have been seen. Modric created 66 goalscoring opportunities last season, one behind Van der Vaart, the fact that our leading striker scored 10 (Pavlyuchenko) shows where it all went wrong.

Both players have a confidence on the ball that makes their quality obvious to see, it would be a great shame if they could not be accommodated in the same side, fortunately I think they can and I hope they will be next season. If Van der Vaart stops dropping all the way back to get the ball, and out of somewhere we find an in form striker I’ll be a happy man.

Do you agree? Would Redknapp be better off with a traditional 4-4-2?

La Liga wrap: Important wins for Almeria, Real

Almeria climbed off the bottom of the La Liga table with a 3-2 win over relegation rivals Osasuna on Sunday.

Jose Luis Oltra’s men got off to a dream start, with goals to Carlos Garcia Badias and Leonardo Ulloa putting them two-up after just 11 minutes.

Badias was on the end of a Hernan Bernadello corner to finish from inside the six-yard box, before Michel’s cross found Argentine striker Ulloa three minutes later to give the hosts a strong lead.

Osasuna pulled a goal back via the boot of Carlos Aranda, whose shot from the edge of the area sparked the visitors into action.

But they could not find an equaliser, and shortly after the break the home side restored their two-goal buffer when Ulloa scored his second from Michael Jakobsen’s cross.

Osasuna striker Dejan Lekic struck two minutes into second-half injury time to create some nervous moments for Almeria but they held on for three vital points, lifting them to 18th on the table and just one point from safety.

Real Madrid kept the gap between themselves and Barcelona to four points on the table, with a 1-0 victory over Mallorca.

France forward Karim Benzema’s strike in the 61st minute was all Jose Mourinho’s side needed to get maximum points from the clash at the Bernabeu.

Espanyol consolidated their fifth placing on the table with a 3-1 win away to Getafe at Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Miku put the hosts ahead in the 14th minute, and they maintained their lead to the break.

But it was all Espanyol after half-time, as Luis Garcia, Jose Callejon and Sergio Garcia all netted in the space of 12 minutes.

Real Zaragoza continued their resurgent league form, bringing up their third win in four with a 1-0 triumph over Deportivo La Coruna.

Sporting Gijon upset Atletico Madrid 1-0 home, with striker David Barral on target for the victors.

Villas-Boas fitting the bill for Tottenham

Tottenham are ready to offer their vacant managerial role to Andre Villas Boas, according to The Guardian.

The north London club are in the market for a new head coach after dismissing Harry Redknapp last week, and are thought to have met with the ex-Chelsea trainer on Friday and Saturday.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is thought to want a young, motivated manager to lead the side forward, and has also taken David Moyes, Roberto Martinez and Laurent Blanc into consideration.

Despite this, Villas Boas has emerged as the favourite for the position, and will be offered the role in coming days.

One of the pre-requisites to the Portuguese trainer accepting the position is assurances over the future of key playmaker Luka Modric, who Villas Boas tried to sign for Chelsea last summer.

Whether Modric leaves or stays Villas Boas is expected to have a considerable transfer kitty to spend this summer however, and will be charged with delivering Champions League football to the White Hart Lane side.

Liverpool 1-1 Sunderland – Match Review

Liverpool and Sunderland shared the spoils at Anfield in what was the battle of the debutants.

No fewer than 7 players made their debuts for their respective new clubs, in a game that was very much a clichéd game of two halves.

Liverpool was by far the better team in the first half and created numerous chances and although Luis Suarez missed an early penalty, was able to head home from the impressive Charlie Adam.

The penalty caused friction within the Liverpool camp who felt that Phil Dowd should have sent off Kieran Richardson for the challenge on the Uruguayan. Whether Dowd felt Suarez was going away from goal remains unknown, but it is hard to argue that this was a goalscoring opportunity that was thwarted by Richardson’s challenge. Dowd issued a yellow much to the dismay of the Reds.

Sunderland impressed in the second half and looked the much better of the two teams and scored a wonderful equaliser through Sebastian Larsson. Sessegnon’s cross was met with an acrobatic effort from the Swedish international that gave Pepe Reina absolutely no chance.

Both sides huffed and puffed in the end but neither could make a breakthrough to secure the points. The spoils were shared in a result that Steve Bruce would arguably be the happier with.

Raiola confirms Liverpool interest

Mark van Bommel has been attracting much interest from the Premier League in recent weeks and the Dutch international’s agent is claiming that Liverpool have made an offer for the Bayern Munich midfielder.

Van Bommel’s agent Mino Raiola has confirmed that the Anfield club has made a firm offer for the player, but also that the Reds face competition for his signature. Raiola told Germany’s Bild newspaper that “I know about Liverpool’s interest, but other offers are currently more interesting.” He went on to say “I have got to find Mark the perfect club and we still have enough time for that.”

So is Liverpool the perfect club for Mark van Bommel? Kenny Dalglish is seemingly keen to add some experience and quality to his squad and in those two respects van Bommel is an ideal signing. With the Dutchman’s contract expiring in the summer, the Reds should be able to get van Bommel on the cheap as well.

Mark van Bommel himself was not willing to shed any light on the situation. He said “you never know what the future brings. I am concentrating on Bayern while my agent takes care of all the rest.”

The 33-year-old looks almost certain to leave Bayern Munich in the summer, but he could yet stay in the Bundesliga and sign for Wolfsburg, or move to Italy where Serie A giants AC Milan have registered an interest. If the Bayern Munich captain was to join Liverpool, he would come to the Premier League with his tough tackling reputation and style of play that could well be perfect for the English game.

Ranocchia to be used as bait to tempt City

Inter will offer central defender Andrea Ranocchia as part of a deal to try and sign Aleksandar Kolarov, according to The Sun.

The Serbian left-back has fallen out of favour at the Etihad Stadium since the arrival of Gael Clichy last summer, and as such he is keen to move clubs to find regular first-team football.

Juventus are reported to have made a loan move to sign the full-back this week, but Roberto Mancini’s men have rejected this as they look to sell the fringe player.

Inter are also interested in the eastern European defender, but are keen to reduce the transfer fee they would pay for Kolarov.

With Mancini looking to sign an extra central defender this summer as cover to Vincent Kompany and Joleon Lescott, Ranocchia has emerged as a potential target.

Bojan focused on Roma future

New Roma signing Bojan Krkic wants to put his bitter departure from European champions Barcelona behind him.The Spain Under-21 international criticised Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola after signing for his new Serie A employers on Friday.

But Krkic says he has moved on and is focused on producing his best form for Luis Enrique’s team.

“Well, first of all I’m very happy to be here. I came from a big club, but I have moved to a big club and for me it is a dream to be here,” Krkic said on Monday.

“Regarding Guardiola and Barcelona, for me it is finished. I only want to think about Roma.”

“Coming here to work for Luis Enrique makes me think a lot of things. It was because of him that I made my decision to come here and I want to thank him for that.”

The 20-year-old is hopeful of taking inspiration from former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Thierry Henry after choosing to wear the number 14 jersey this season.

After his departure from La Liga, Krkic admitted he had not spoken to Guardiola since May’s UEFA Champions League final and said he did not think the Spaniard was the best coach in the world.

Do Aston Villa fans have a right to expect more?

After defeat to Liverpool, and all that went with it, it was the first time Aston Villa fans vented their frustrations at Gerard Houllier. After showing too much respect for one of his former clubs and suffering a heavy defeat, Aston Villa fans have started to question their managers style of play and ability to move Aston Villa forward. Are Aston Villa fans right to question their manager’s capabilities?

After the job Martin O’Neill did at Aston Villa, it was always going to be a difficult job for anyone. The funds simply aren’t in place to compete with Tottenham and Manchester City and the squad is thin. Martin O’Neill took Aston Villa as far as he could – is Houllier the right man for Aston Villa? Sadly, it seems that his tactics and football philosophy are outdated and he hasn’t changed from his time at Liverpool. Of course Aston Villa fans will be disgruntled with the way he sets his teams out. Martin O’Neill was a manager who desired expressive and expansive play – Houllier will not allow his players this freedom.

It is unfair to judge Houllier against O’Neill because Villa are a work in progress. Come January, Villa could have a new look, but it seems they will loose players before they invest. Take the example of Ashley Young. Will he now see Villa as a declining club under Houllier, and look to move on come January? It would be a huge blow for Aston Villa and their fans. They way it is going at Villa Park at the moment, who would bet against it.

Aston Villa fans deserve better that what Houllier has offered so far. Houllier is a better manager than he is showing. There are problems at Aston Villa – and Houllier is shouldering a lot of the fans’ frustrations. They are frustrated about not being able to compete in the transfer market, loosing key players to teams challenging around them and the fear that they are declining. If Aston Villa continue to drop down the Premier League table, Houllier may find himself out of a job. Fans’ frustration is very powerful.

The best thing Gerard Houllier and Aston Villa can do is get on with the job. The win against West Brom on Saturday will have lifted the whole club – it could be the kick start their season needed. Aston Villa need accept that they have fallen behind clubs, but they can fight back. Does Houllier have the fight in him? Do Villa need another O’Neill character – passionate. If results get better it wont be an issue, but Houllier could be in trouble if Villa do not start climbing the table again.

Michael Chopra – Hero Or Villain For Ipswich?

Earlier this week, Paul Jewell announced that Michael Chopra will be spending three weeks at a health farm in California as part of the striker’s pre-season preparations.

Jewell believes that this should help Chopra’s fitness and give him the best chance of starting next season in fine form. Views on Chopra vary amongst Ipswich fans and this was clear to see when hearing/reading how they reacted to this story.

Generally, the reaction was sensible and positive with most fans mentioning how they hope the health farm will help Chopra hit the ground running next season. However, a few fans aren’t as fond of the former Cardiff City striker and used the story as an opportunity to slate him for the problems he has had during his time at Ipswich. It is strange to hear that a clubs top goal scorer could be such an unpopular figure, especially as consistent goal scorers are so hard to come by in The Championship.

At the start of the season everyone at Ipswich considered the signing of Chopra fantastic news. It has been a long time since Ipswich have had a striker with a proven record at this level so it was great to see that the club had snatched a player who could potentially score 20 goals in a season.

Chopra’s popularity rose even higher when he scored twice in the opening game away at Bristol City but somewhere along the line this popularity plummeted. In October news came out that 28 year old striker had been suffering from a gambling addiction; admitting to losing up to £20,000 a day and probably having lost more than £2 million over a few years. Since then Chopra has been facing an uphill battle to win over the Ipswich fans and he took a while to get going again after this set back.

As the season progressed he had a few stints without scoring and a few bursts of form where he bagged plenty of goals, so it has been a mixed season for Chopra. Although, considering the problems he has had the Ipswich striker has had a good season as he has scored 14 goals with an inconsistent team behind him, also making him the clubs top goal scorer.

It is hard to label Chopra as either a hero or a villain for Ipswich. You could argue that the striker has been a massive burden on the club by bringing his problems into the dressing room and even needing the club to loan him money to pay his gambling debts.

The team’s performance this season was always going to depend a lot on Chopra’s form as he was being used as a lone striker; so the problems he had obviously had some affect on the team. However, the club and the management were all well aware of Chopra’s gambling problems before he was brought to the club so they knew what they were getting themselves in for.

You could even go as far to argue the exact opposite; that Chopra has been a hero for Ipswich this season as without his goals the club may have finished a lot closer to the relegation zone. Still, the most common assessment of Chopra that I have heard amongst Ipswich fans is that they feel he should have scored more this season and they hope he will next season once his gambling problems are further behind him. This is a fair assessment and one I think the Newcastle-born striker would be content with hearing.

Nobody can deny that he has the potential to be the 20 goal a season man that Ipswich want him to be. Any negativity aimed towards Chopra from the fans has usually stemmed from the frustration that he hasn’t been that man so far.

The truth is that if he had scored 20-30 goals this season even the most negative Ipswich fan would have forgotten about Chopra’s gambling problems. The one certainty is that Chopra should be judged from now on by his performances on the pitch alone and if he can put his problems behind him then he will be a key player next season.
