Crystal Palace: Fans react to Alexandre Lacazette links

Crystal Palace and West Ham have been linked with a possible swoop for Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette, according to 90min.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles fans have been giving their thoughts to the rumours on social media.

90min shared a story on Thursday, providing an update on Lacazette’s future at the Emirates Stadium.

They suggest that the French forward, who turned 30 in May, is likely to leave the club in the coming months.

He could sign a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club in the New Year when he is into the final six months of his contract, however, remaining in London is also a possibility.

The report suggests that the Eagles and the Hammers are possible destinations for Lacazette, who is open to remaining in the capital.

Exclusive: Ex-PL star drops big Celtic transfer prediction

Former Southampton star Carlton Palmer insists that goalkeeper Fraser Forster could join Celtic on a free transfer next summer once his contract expires.

The 6 ft 7 goalkeeper has enjoyed a number of spells at the Scottish champions in recent seasons.

Forster spent the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons on loan at the club, before making that move permanent in 2012. He remained there for two years and joined Southampton, but returned to the Hoops for the 2019/20 season.

In the 19/20 season, Forster made 39 appearances for the club, but he struggled for minutes upon his return to Southampton, playing 13 times in all competitions.

He has been on the bench thus far this term, apart from the EFL Cup clash with Newport County, which the Saints won 8-0.

His contract is set to expire at the end of this season and Palmer believes that a move to Celtic could happen once the season is over.

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, he said: “Absolutely, he’s got an affinity with the supporters there so, yeah, I could easily see that happening, with Celtic also in the financial position that they’re in, I think he’d be a good fit on a free.

“I could definitely see that happening.”

Liverpool suffer huge selection setback

Liverpool have suffered a huge blow ahead of their Premier League fixture with Leeds United over the weekend after their Brazilian contingent were ruled out of action.

What’s the story?

Alisson Becker, Fabinho and Roberto Firmino have been banned for a short period of time after the Anfield outfit’s hierarchy refused to release them for international duty due to quarantine rules for red-listed countries by the UK Government.

A report in the Liverpool ECHO stated that: “The club have received notification from FIFA that the Brazilian FA has asked the governing body to invoke their five-day rule, which sees players who fail to link up for national team duty then banned for a brief period from featuring for their clubs.

“With Brazil’s final match of the current break taking place in the early hours of Friday morning UK time, it means Alisson, Fabinho and Firmino – who in any case is hampered by a hamstring problem – will miss the Premier League trip to Leeds United on Sunday.”

Jurgen Klopp will be fuming

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will undoubtedly be fuming at this latest revelation as he will be forced to contend with the absence of two key players due to football politics.

Although Firmino is currently injured and would have been fit to play, Alisson and Fabinho have featured heavily in the club’s opening three league encounters of the season, and their enforced omissions from the starting line-up will significantly weaken the 19-time English champions.

After picking up a very respectable seven points from a possible nine in the opening weeks of the current campaign, Liverpool will be hoping to continue their good form at Elland Road on Sunday.

However, that task has now become significantly harder after their first-choice goalkeeper and key defensive midfielder have been ordered to stay at home.

Maguire reacts to Rangers’ Cinch stand-off

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been reacting to Glasgow Rangers’ continued decision not to feature Cinch either on their sleeves or around Ibrox.

The Lowdown: Gers continue Cinch stance

Earlier this year, the SPFL signed a five-year deal (sportspromedia.com) worth £8m per season with new title sponsor Cinch – it is the biggest such agreement in the organisation’s history.

However, the Gers believe there are gaps in the contract and have therefore refused to advertise the sponsor during their Premiership matches (The Daily Record).

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire believes that it is a big blow to Cinch and believes they will be furious with the Gers’ stance. He said:

“The SPFL deal is worth £8m, which is a record.

“They were criticised for not having a sponsor last season. As part of the deal, you’ve got to feature Cinch’s logo on the sleeve and in the matchday event.

“It works out at around £34,000 per club, per season. That’s a lot of money for a club in League 2, though I presume the money is tiered not split equally between each team in the league system.

“But there is no love lost between the SPFL and Rangers. The club believes that, under Scottish law, they don’t have to comply with the deal.

“The downside is that Rangers are currently the biggest draw in Scottish football in terms of viewership and interest.

“That means that they are on TV every week. From Cinch’s point of view, if they refuse to play ball, it’s a bitter loss of profile. They’ll be furious.”

The Verdict: Distraction

After a stellar 2020/21 campaign in which the Gers didn’t lose a single league game as they claimed the Premiership title (thefishy.co.uk), the new season has not got off to the best of starts for the 55-time Scottish champions. It has taken them just two league outings to suffer their first defeat this time around, a 1-0 loss to Dundee United (Sky Sports), while they also find themselves 2-1 down after the first leg of their Champions League third qualifying round tie with Malmo.

While the Cinch deal is not directly linked to performances on the pitch, it is becoming a bigger and bigger talking point and may be evolving into a distraction for the Gers. The return leg of the clash with Malmo is on Tuesday – they cannot afford to have their minds elsewhere.

In other news, Rangers are open to offers for this ace.

Man City linked with Kyle Hudlin

Premier League champions Manchester City have been linked with a shock summer move for rumoured Sheffield Wednesday transfer target Kyle Hudlin.

The Lowdown: Owls linked with Hudlin move

The Owls have had a busy summer in the transfer window, bringing in 13 new players in order to aid their League One promotion bid.

One player who hasn’t joined yet but has been linked with a move to Hillsborough in recent months is Hudlin, who is a remarkable 6 foot 9 tall and has scored 10 goals in 36 appearances for National League side Solihull Moors.

The Latest: City emerge as shock suitors

A surprise update has now emerged, with The Athletic claiming that Manchester City are considering signing the striker, who has been reported as ‘the tallest outfield professional player in Britain’.

The Premier League giants have sent representatives to watch Hudlin in action, with Middlesbrough and Cardiff City also mentioned as possible suitors.

The Verdict: Surely not?

It remains to be seen whether Wednesday’s prior interest in Hudlin remains strong, but it would be a huge shock if he went to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s side are known for their huge spending and are keen on signing Harry Kane from Tottenham, who as England captain and a renowned Premier League goalscorer is a few levels above Hudlin, with the greatest of respect to the Solihull Moors marksman.

At 21, he does represent an exciting young prospect, though, and he could be a very useful option for Wednesday, given his extraordinary height and proven scoring ability. Perhaps the Owls remain more realistic candidates than Man City despite the Premier League champions’ apparent interest.

Journalist unsure whether Leeds target Traore is a Bielsa player

Wolves winger Adama Traore may not be a good fit for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United, says Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

Traore has been heavily linked with a move to Elland Road this summer, with 90min recently reporting that the Yorkshire club are considering making a bid for the player.

When it came to delivering in the final third, Traore was not at his best last season, coming up with just four goal contributions in the Premier League.

Despite that, the £27m-rated 25-year-old still looks like he can bring an attacking threat to Leeds’ side. As per WhoScored, no player in English football’s top flight managed to average more dribbles per game than he did.

For Hatfield, though, Traore does not have all the requirements needed to play in a Bielsa team. The Wolves journalist told FFC:

“I’m not too sure whether he’s a Bielsa player to be brutally honest. I think there’s always been a couple question marks over not his work rate, but his defensive nous I’d say.

“And for Leeds, although they are, you know, all-out attack a lot of the time, I’m sure Bielsa wants his players tracking back and doing some defensive dirty work as well, which is not what Traore’s really known for.”

It is something to consider, but given how strong the Traore to Leeds links have been, it would definitely not be a surprise if the Whites did end up launching a bid for the Spain international.

Spurs eye Martinez

According to L’Interista, Tottenham are interested in signing Lautaro Martinez if Harry Kane forces a move away from the club.

The Lowdown: Kane proving a problem

Kane has already indicated to Tottenham that he wishes to leave the club this summer (Sky Sports), but so far Daniel Levy and Fabio Paratici have held firm.

The England international then failed to report for training on Monday (The Guardian), which appears to indicate he is looking to force a move away from north London by any means necessary.

Of course, any exit for the Lilywhites talisman would come with a significant boost to the transfer kitty, and a direct replacement would be a necessity.

The Latest: Spurs eye Martinez

If Kane is able to get a transfer elsewhere, Tottenham will make a move for Internazionale striker Martinez according to reports in Milan.

They claim Paratici and co have now lined up the Argentina international as the main alternative to their skipper.

The Verdict: Top target

Signing Martinez would more than soften the blow of Kane’s departure if he does leave this summer. With 49 goals in 132 games for Inter and 14 strikes in 28 Argentina caps (Transfermarkt), including three at the Copa America as his country lifted the trophy, the forward is already a star talent and is still just 23 years of age.

Lionel Messi has even previously called Martinez a “complete” player in the past (via 90min.com) – praise does not come any higher than that.

Valued at £72m (Transfermarkt), Martinez would set Spurs back a big fee, but any sale of Kane would surely cover that. If Tottenham’s star man does leave, Martinez would be a fantastic replacement.

In other news, Tottenham are interested in signing this Euro 2020 ace.

Spurs complete report on Cantwell

An update has emerged on Norwich City midfielder Todd Cantwell, regarding Tottenham’s interest in his services…

What’s the talk?

According to Dean Jones of EuroSport, Tottenham have put together a scouting report on Norwich City attacking midfielder Todd Cantwell. Fabio Paratici is looking to improve Nuno Santo’s squad this summer and the Englishman is one of a number of midfielders the club are considering – along with Franck Kessie, Miralem Pjanic and Marcel Sabitzer.

Fans would love it

Daniel Levy must sanction a swoop for Cantwell this summer to bolster Santo’s squad. If there is a chance that he could be available in the coming weeks then Spurs must act and attempt to swoop him up as he could be an excellent addition to add depth in the attacking areas.

Cantwell has 12 months left on his contract at Carrow Road, although Norwich do have an option to extend it by a further year. This means that Spurs could, potentially, convince the Canaries to part ways with Cantwell in order to avoid his value depreciating throughout the course of next season. If Norwich are relegated from the Premier League and then have Cantwell in limbo with Championship football on the horizon and just a year left on his deal, then that could be a real cause for concern.

Therefore, the opportunity could be there for Tottenham to sign him and it could be a smart piece of business by the club. The 23-year-old is a talented young player who could have potential to improve and develop into a key player for Santo over the course of a number of years, which fans could enjoy watching.

Former Norwich and West Ham striker Dean Ashton lauded him as a “wonderful” player earlier this year and highlighted his ability to take opponents on with the ball at his feet.

He said:

“When I first saw him I said to Darren Huckerby, ‘how is that lad not training with the first-team?’. He was incredible. The way he was drifting past players. His speed of thought and his awareness. He’s just a wonderful player.”

The £19.8m-rated maestro already has experience in the Premier League. He scored six and assisted two goals in 30 starts in the 2019/20 season for Norwich, before scoring six and assisting six in 30 Championship stars as he averaged an excellent WhoScored rating of 7.13.

Steven Bergwijn, Erik Lamela, Carlos Vinicius and Lucas Moura managed just six goals in the league between them for Spurs last season. This suggests that Cantwell could be an upgrade on Santo’s existing options behind his starting group of forwards; Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.

Therefore, Levy must work hard to land the up-and-coming midfielder this summer as fans would love to see a goalscoring wide man to complement Kane and Son, as they were missing that with the aforementioned flops last term.

Phil Hay drops major Leeds United update

The Athletic’s Phil Hay has dropped a Leeds United update involving the club’s improvements to both the training ground at Thorp Arch, and at Elland Road too.

What’s the story?

Writing for The Athletic, he said:

“Leeds were committed to overhauling their Elland Road pitch this summer, replacing all the drainage and lower layers at a cost of more than £1.5m. The stadium will have a full-spec hybrid surface next season and Leeds requested that their first game of the new term be away from home to allow the pitch as much time as possible to bed in. The work will also see the old dugouts replaced, in line with Premier League requirements.

“As preparations were made to lay the surface, Bielsa made another suggestion. If Leeds were playing on a specific hybrid pitch at Elland Road, would it not make sense for them to train on identical grass too? That way the players would enjoy some continuity.

“The club agreed and at his insistence, another substantial sum of money was set aside to install the same surface at Thorp Arch. He wanted other, more aesthetic, changes to the complex too but an enhanced training pitch was the big idea, a route to more marginal gains.

“These, for Orta and the club’s board, are the surest signs of where Bielsa is mentally: still fixated, still banging the drum for improvements, still glued to his office.”

Bielsa will be buzzing

Amid a superb Premier League season that saw Leeds finish in the top half of the table in their first campaign back in the top-flight, one of the big concerns for Bielsa and the club was the state of the pitch at Elland Road.

At times, it simply didn’t look fit for purpose, and would have looked out of place even in the lower leagues, let alone the top-flight.

When pictures first emerged of the work being done, former Leeds man Noel Whelan said: “They’re going to spend a lot of money on getting the surface right at Elland road. I think when you think about the style of play that we like to play, it’s imperative that you get the pitches, training pitches, everything that’s going to give you that extra edge over other teams.

“The surface is a massive part of it, the way we play. So we need to have our pitches right, you need to have that surface right. Hence why teams play at the training ground with the same dimensions as the first-team ground. You get a feel of it and for progression of players, this is what you need to have now. You know you need to have those standards set high on and off the field.”

Whelan’s comments are a snapshot of just why the extensive work being done is such exciting news for Leeds and why Bielsa will be buzzing. As Hay says, those “marginal gains” are what could translate into points over the course of the season that potentially sees the Whites finish in a European place for example.

The Leeds boss’ meticulousness needs to be matched off-the-field as well, and the fact the club have taken his ideas on board so seriously and have looked to address some of the big problems from last season, shows the level of backing and support they have for him.

A newly renovated pitch at both Elland Road and on the training ground is sure to have Bielsa delighted.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have reignited their interest in this star…

Leeds keen on signing Junior Firpo

Leeds United are interested in signing Barcelona defender Junior Firpo this summer as their search for a new left-back continues.

The Lowdown: Leeds look for new left-back

Marcelo Bielsa will be eyeing up reinforcements throughout his squad in the summer transfer window, but left-back could be a priority position for the manager.

With Ezgjan Alioski’s future very much up in the air, additions in that area could be essential as Leeds look to continue their current rise.

[freshpress-quiz id=“359346″]

The Latest: Whites interested in signing Firpo

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth, the Whites are keen on bringing Firpo to the club, with the Spaniard being described as a ‘strong candidate’ at left-back. A number of other clubs are also interested in signing the 24-year-old, though, with Napoli mentioned in the report.

Firpo made just seven appearances for Barca in La Liga last season, struggling to oust first-choice left-back Jordi Alba from the starting lineup (Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-6/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: Exciting left-back option

Firpo seems to be an ideal option for Leeds, given his age and style of play, with his peak years not likely to arrive for a while.

The Spaniard enjoyed an 89.7& pass completion rate in the league last season, which suggest that he could thrive in Bielsa’s possession-based system. Admittedly he wasn’t always tested defensively at Barca – he only averaged 0.1 tackles per game – but his tally of 1.8 for Real Betis in 2018/19 suggests he can thrive in that area when required.

Leeds could do a lot worse than considering a move for Firpo, who may want a move to a club where he might enjoy more regular game-time.

In other news, a pundit has claimed one Leeds player could be sold this summer. Find out who it is here.
