Hafeez confident of better openings

Pakistan’s need for a substantial opening stand is growing and Mohammad Hafeez is confident he and Ahmed Shehzad can deliver

Osman Samiuddin in Pallekele07-Mar-2011

Mohammad Hafeez, and his opening partner Ahmed Shehzad, have not had a substantial partnership in this World Cup•AFP

Three matches in and murmurs over Pakistan’s opening combination are increasing. Mohammad Hafeez and Ahmed Shehzad have put on 11, 28 and 16 against Kenya, Sri Lanka and Canada but on two occasions the middle order has bailed the side out. There is no move from the team management to change things just yet – in fact there is a commendable rigidity to stick, as much as possible, to the same winning XI – but the need for a substantial stand is growing.Hafeez has looked the more fluent of the two, particularly in his 32 against Sri Lanka, where a disastrous run-out ended a promising knock. The surfaces they have come across, while good for batting, have been more competitive than some seen in the World Cup and that Hafeez concluded has also played a part.”When you assess the pitch as an opener, you have to plan out what it would be like, and both pitches at Hambantota and at the Premadasa had a lot of movement and swing,” Hafeez said in Pallekele, a day before his side’s game with New Zealand. “We need some time to build a good partnership but you get one good delivery or a decision goes against you, which are a partof the game, and you have to take it positively. Here there has been some lateral movement with the new ball and swing as well.”Hafeez’s return to the ODI set-up in the last English summer has brought Pakistan a sense of stability at the top, though his most productive partnership has been with Kamran Akmal, now batting at one down. Hafeez averages nearly 33 in 19 ODIs since, with a hundred – in New Zealand – and three fifties. The figures don’t look outstanding, but he has chipped in otherwise, with wickets (13) and a safe presence in the field.”In the three series against England, South Africa and New Zealand I think I’ve been consistent,” Hafeez said. “It’s only that I haven’t performed in three World Cup matches. In one match I got run out and in another I got a bad decision. To perform in cricket you need luck other than your own potential as well sometimes.”A good start also gives Pakistan greater flexibility in their batting order. Because the openers have not so far come off, Pakistan has stuck with bringing Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq together behind Kamran Akmal, in order to insure against a collapse. But there are indications within the camp that if the openers provide a substantial, pacy start, Abdul Razzaq or even Shahid Afridi could be pushed up the order, as high as one-down.Having scored his first and only ODI hundred against tomorrow’s opponents in the series in January, a change of results, Hafeez believes, is due. “As an opener I know we have not given good starts to the team, but there’s no lack of confidence. We just need one good partnership to get back the confidence. We handled New Zealand’s bowling very well [in New Zealand], I also scored a century against them so the confidence is very high.”

– O Elias e o Luan estavam cansados.

T&T, Hampshire set up title clash

A round-up of the semi-finals of the Caribbean T20

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Jan-2011Johann Myburgh scored 88 off 58 balls to lead Hampshire to a competitive total against Windward Islands, after which Hamza Riazuddin’s four-wicket spell helped secure a narrow victory, and with it a spot in the Caribbean T20 final. Hampshire had a solid start to their innings, with Jimmy Adams and Myburgh adding 47 in 6 overs before Adams was run out. Myburgh provided the acceleration, striking six sixes during his half-century, while James Vince made 36 off 32 balls. Myburgh, who was eventually bowled by Mervin Matthew with the score on 160, was the only batsman dismissed by a Windward bowler. The other three wickets in the score of 166 for 4 were run out.Windward lost Johnson Charles early but Andre Fletcher and Devon Smith steadied the chase. They didn’t score at breakneck speed but they led Windward to 75 in the 10th over, when Riazuddin struck for the first time, getting Smith caught behind. Keddy Lesporis was run out for 6 but Windward were still in it, at 114 for 3, when the 16th over began. In that over, Riazuddin ripped out three wickets, reducing the innings to 116 for 6, and severely broke Windward’s momentum. Riazuddin finished with 4 for 15, and even though Matthew blasted 27 off 15, Windward fell four runs short.Trinidad & Tobago’s passage to the final was easier as they beat Jamaica by eight wickets with 13 balls to spare in the second semi-final. The result ensured T&T’s qualification to the Champions League later this year by virtue of being the best Caribbean side in the competition.Jamaica’s innings failed to take off as wickets fell regularly and the run-rate struggled to rise over six. The top four batsmen fell for less than 20 and strike-rates of less than 100. Wavell Hinds and Andre Russell provided some stability, scoring 23 and 36, but the tail folded after their departures. T&T legspinner Samuel Badree, who opened the bowling, finished with 1 for 15 in four overs, while Ravi Rampaul and Sunil Narine picked up two wickets each. T&T needed only 137 to set up a summit clash with Hampshire. The top order did the job, with Adrian Barath making 37 and Lendl Simmons contributing 51. Darren Bravo continued his impressive form, scoring 25 off 19 balls at No. 3, to lead T&T to 140 for 2 in the 18th over. Of the six bowlers Jamaica used, only Jerome Taylor took a wicket.

Ten Hag could axe Man Utd duo

Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard could be granted one last chance to rescue their Manchester United careers with the appointment of Erik ten Hag.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from The Sun who claim that Rashford has received assurances that he will get his chance to perform under Ten Hag next season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

Whilst Lingard could also stay if Ten Hag is able to convince him that he has a future at Manchester United.

Saved or Axed?

24-year-old Rashford has endured the worst season of his career this year, with the out-of-favour England international having just four goals and two assists to show for his 25 appearances for United this season.

It goes without saying that Lingard has also suffered this season, but more so for game-time rather than form, with the 29-year-old accumulating just 355 minutes this campaign from 16 cameo appearances that have seen him grab two goals.

Lingard, who has been dubbed “awful” by Journalist Rob Blanchette, is free to sign a pre-contract agreement with his deal expiring this summer.

Rashford’s situation on the other hand is slightly more intricate, with the winger still holding value amidst his contract expiry in 2023, of which the club have an option to extend by a year.

The 24-year-old – who was labelled “absolutely terrible” by Chris Waddle for his performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League – does have something going for him though. And that is the fact that this is his first blip at Man United with the club massively underachieving as a collective this season.

Though, quite simply, the pair have not been good enough this season and with Ten Hag looking to rebuild the Red Devils, the saving in wages on Lingard and the sale of £45m-rated Rashford could help United to build on their transfer war chest.

Ten Hag’s stance on the £275k-per-week pair will make or break their future at Old Trafford, though with on-going links to the likes of Sebastien Haller, Nicolo Zaniolo, and Antony, it does not bode well for the duo and it should well see them axed.

Bombay High Court upholds Rajasthan's return

The Bombay High Court has upheld the stay issued by the judge hearing the arbitration between Rajasthan Royals and the BCCI, but subject to certain conditions

The Bombay High Court has upheld the stay on the termination of Rajasthan Royals issued by the judge hearing the arbitration case between the franchise and the BCCI. The board had earlier appealed against the order issued by the arbitrator, Justice BN Srikrishna, on November 30 that gave the team back all its rights under the franchise agreement, allowing it to participate in the player auction currently scheduled for January 8 and 9. Justice S Vazifdar, who is hearing the case, ruled in Rajasthan’s favour today. The court, however, modified the arbitrator’s order, adding conditions similar to those it issued in the Kings XI Punjab verdict last week, where it granted an interim stay on the franchise’s expulsion, subject to certain stipulations. In Rajasthan’s case, the court has asked for the owners – Manoj Badale, Suresh Chellaram and Lachlan Murdoch – to file an affidavit stating that “they are in control of their respective investment companies”, and to specify how they control these companies, by January 3, 2011. The franchise will also have to provide a bank guarantee, from a nationalised Indian bank (a bank owned by the government of India), worth $20.83 million – $18 million to cover the players’ salaries over two years and $2.83 million to cover their contract with the BCCI.Rajasthan’s lead counsel, Janak Dwarkadas, argued that the guarantee for players’ salaries should be reduced to $11.8 million because the franchise had retained Shane Watson and Shane Warne at a stipulated cost of $3.1 million per year, and the pair had agreed to sign with them knowing that the team was involved in legal proceedings. The court responded by saying the two players could choose to provide no-objection certificates saying they did not need their salaries protected by the court. If they do so, Rajasthan will be free to deduct $6.2 million from the bank guarantee amount.Rajasthan’s IPL affiliation was terminated by the BCCI on October 10 on charges of transgression of shareholding and ownership norms that threatened to “shake the very foundation of the tender process”, as the notice put it. The two sides then decided to settle their dispute over the termination through arbitration on November 15 after Rajasthan had filed a case in the High Court challenging the board’s decision to take the step unilaterally. Both parties argued their case over four days, after which Srikrishna ruled in Rajasthan’s favour. The crux of his argument was that the BCCI all along knew Rajasthan’s ownership patterns, and that by communicating with it for three-and-a-half years – and accepting the guarantee money – effectively approved of it.The BCCI now has the option of appealing against the decision to the Supreme Court, but the court is closed for two weeks beginning December 17, meaning the franchise is practically guaranteed to take part in the auction, unless it is postponed again – something that the BCCI is reportedly considering. The decision is another blow to the board’s attempts to host an eight-team IPL in 2011, as opposed to the original decision made in Lalit Modi’s tenure – to field 10 teams from the fourth season onwards. The arbitration proceedings between Rajasthan and the board will proceed independent of the court’s decision on the issue of termination, and the stay will remain in place until six weeks after the arbitrator’s final ruling on the case.

Ponting questions England batting strength

Ricky Ponting has questioned whether England have the batting strength necessary to retain the Ashes by winning in Australia

Ricky Ponting has questioned whether England have the batting strength necessary to retain the Ashes by winning in Australia, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Mike Gatting’s team did so in 1986-87.”Kevin Pietersen, obviously, is a big question mark for them at the moment,” Ponting told UAE’s Radio 2 (listen to the entire interview on ESPNcricinfo’s ). “Alastair Cook is just holding on to his spot by the skin of his teeth, and [Paul] Collingwood has probably not had the best Test summer of his life either. So there is enough happening around there to know that they will be a little nervous when they arrive in Australia.”Pietersen averaged 27.25 in four innings against Pakistan this summer and hasn’t scored a century in 19 months. John Buchanan, the former Australia coach who has accepted a consulting role with the ECB, had also suggested that Pietersen could be a ‘major problem’ for England.Cook had been under intense pressure following a prolonged lean spell before earning some breathing room with a gutsy 110 against Pakistan at The Oval. Collingwood had a successful tour of South Africa last winter but six of his previous eight Test innings have been scores of five or less.Ponting said that England could pose a strong challenge, especially with the rise of offspinner Graeme Swann and fast bowler Stuart Broad, whose five wickets at The Oval were vital to England reclaiming the Ashes last year, continuing to deliver in crunch situations.”They have some good players in their side at the moment, who are playing well,” Ponting said. “Graeme Swann is probably the stand out. Stuart Broad, and probably their captain [Andrew Strauss], these have been the guys who have stood up for them over the last couple of years. But they have certainly been the more consistent team than any English team I have played against in the past.”Australia have a formidable home record, having lost only one series since 1992-93. They blanked England 5-0 in 2006-07, and Ponting hoped his side could repeat that performance. “We all know how hard opposition teams find it coming to Australia, and particularly starting at the Gabba, they always find it a difficult place to win. So as an Australian, and an Australian captain, we are hoping for a very similar series to the last one.”Ponting has played in more Test wins than anyone else and already has three World Cup trophies – two as captain – but insisted his hunger for the game hadn’t waned.”There is no doubt about that. I mean, I would have not worked as hard as I have over the last eight weeks if the hunger wasn’t there,” he said. “I am as excited about the next period of cricket, with the Ashes and then the World Cup at the end of that, so that is about six or seven months of biggest cricket tournaments that you ever play.”

Celtic had a howler over Lewis Morgan sale

Celtic have been involved in many transfer deals over the years, whether it be in terms of new players making moves to Parkhead or others leaving the club on loan or permanent deals.

One particular move that took place in recent years that the Hoops may now be regretting is their sale of winger Lewis Morgan.

Signed from St. Mirren during the 2018 January transfer window for a fee of around £300k, the attacker made just 31 appearances for the Hoops across all competitions.

In those appearances, the winger scored two goals and provided only three assists before being sold to Inter Miami in January 2020 for a fee of £400k.

Even though they managed to make a profit on him, it didn’t feel worthwhile signing him in the first place based on what they got out of him on the pitch in terms of consistent goals and assists.

With 58 appearances to his name for David Beckham’s club, the former Celtic figure found the net seven times and delivered seven assists before then being sold again.

This time, Morgan found himself staying in America but joining New York Red Bulls back in December for a fee of $1.2m (£942k).

Having played in just eight games for his new club, the attacker, who was picking up £8k-per-week in Miami, has scored four goals and provided one assist for his teammates.

According to Transfermarkt, the Scotsman’s current market value stands at £3.6m, which is significantly higher than the fee that Celtic got for him and what his value was listed as during his time at Parkhead.

This highlights just how impressive the 25-year-old has been since leaving Celtic, as he now seems to be shining in America.

Praised for his “unique” ability to use both feet to an equally high level on the pitch by his previous club, Morgan could now be filed under the category of players that Celtic were maybe a bit hasty when it came to selling.

Even though the Bhoys have not had much trouble when it comes to scoring goals in the league this season, it would have been interesting to see what Morgan could have achieved under the management of Ange Postecoglou had the club not sold him.
