One of the toughest bowling days – Vettori

Daniel Vettori says the strong wind in Wellington made the second day of New Zealand’s Test against South Africa one of the toughest days he has had to bowl on

Firdose Moonda at the Basin Reserve 24-Mar-2012

Conditions did not make life easy for Daniel Vettori on the second day in Wellington•AFP

Complaining about the weather is not becoming of athletes. After all, they choose to play sport for a living so they should be willing to put up with conditions that are occasionally less than pleasant. Today, though, nobody would have blamed any of the New Zealand players for moaning about the weather. They had to field under heavily pregnant skies with tufts of drizzle blowing in intermittently. Worse than that, a wind of up to 80kph lashed the Basin Reserve, blowing the flags off their poles, the seagulls off their perches and the bowlers off their delivery strides. Regularly.”Out of the 460 odd days of Test cricket I have played, this ranks somewhere near the bottom,” Daniel Vettori said with a wry smile when asked to assess the day. “It was an incredibly tough day in terms of the conditions. Just not easy for the bowlers.”From the stands, or on television, one cannot judge just how difficult it is to deal with wind. “For the fast bowlers bowling with the wind behind them, it’s just about settling in and getting used to having it on your back,” Vettori said. “But into the wind it’s pretty tough for the seamers and even for the spinners. You get blown around in your run-up and in your delivery stride, and it can be a little difficult.”Mark Gillespie and Kane Williamson had the most notable difficulty with their run-ups, having to restart a few times, but all the bowlers struggled.Vettori did not use the conditions as an excuse for New Zealand’s performance, though, which saw them bowl 37 overs on the second day without taking a wicket, miss the two chances that were created from the edge of Alviro Petersen’s bat and allow Petersen and JP Duminy to get on top of them. That came on the back of an ordinary first day, on which New Zealand managed to take only two wickets after putting the opposition in. Vettori said they were willing to front up to the fact that they had not done enough despite the two truncated days of cricket.”We were pretty disappointed after winning the toss and that first session [on Friday]. We probably fought back a little bit with the big wicket of [Hashim] Amla but the sort of stop-start nature of today and not knowing what we were doing also did not help.”We were a bit shocked to be starting at 2pm as well. The start of today wasn’t as successful as we wanted because we needed an early breakthrough this afternoon. Overall we are disappointed in only taking two wickets on a wicket that offered some assistance early on.”JP Duminy was less critical in his appraisal of the conditions, rating the day “about a seven,” as far as conditions go. Although the wind has a less hostile effect on batsmen, it did require Duminy to make certain adjustments. “I spread my feet a little bit more to get a good centre base,” he said. “It was difficult at times facing bowlers coming into the wind; if they pitched the ball up it sort of wobbled a bit. I tried to play as straight as possible. The other trouble is maybe the bat wobbling in the air during your backlift, so I held it a bit firmer to make sure I had control.”Duminy’s adjustment to the conditions was accompanied by an adjustment to the format, as he has not played Test cricket in more than two years. He finished the day unbeaten on 76 and has shown every intent of hanging around for long. “It’s a decent deck to bat on and there’s a little bit there for the bowlers as well,” he said.Vettori said he expected there to still be something in the track for the bowlers on the third day. “It’s still got some pace in it but it depends on the conditions tomorrow. That’s always the key in Wellington; overhead conditions play a big part,” he said. “Sometimes the best days are when it’s a big blue sky and the ball can swing here.”Clear weather and sunshine is predicted for the rest of the match and Vettori said he hoped New Zealand could make the most of it. “Wickets can fall in clumps here, so that’s our goal tomorrow morning. If the conditions hold out and it’s a better bowling day we need to attack pretty earlier on.”Edited by Dustin Silgardo

Pois no Barradão ele decidiu, outra vez.

Um time seguro; o outro…

Gayle diagnosed with grade two groin strain

Chris Gayle has arrived in South Africa carrying a grade two groin strain that could keep him out of action for the Dolphins for at least another week

Firdose Moonda21-Feb-2012

It’s Chris Gayle’s vast Twenty20-league experience that the Dolphins hope to gain from•Associated Press

Chris Gayle has arrived in South Africa carrying a grade two groin strain that could keep him out of action for the Dolphins for at least another week. Gayle is contracted to the Durban-based franchise for the entire MiWAY T20 Challenge but missed their first match on Sunday because of an injury sustained while playing for the Barisal Burners in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).Gayle’s injury was assessed in Durban on Monday, and both he and the Dolphins are remaining tight lipped about when he will be fit to play. The usual timeframe for an injury of this description to heal is two to three weeks and Gayle has already had a week’s healing time.”We will have to look at how the rehab goes,” Gayle said in Durban. “I’m feeling a bit better. The last couple of days I was feeling a bit on the negative side, but I’m walking much better than when the injury happened. It’s slowly progressing but, as a sportsman, I have to look after myself properly and try and get back on the park as quickly as possible. We will take each day as it comes.”The Dolphins play three matches this week, on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, and then have a four-day break before their next match on March 2nd. They opened their campaign with a three-run win over the new seventh franchise, Impi, on February 19. Gayle is their only overseas signing after Australia quick Shaun Tait pulled out with an elbow injury.Gayle is aware that he is marquee player of the event, which has ten internationals spread across the seven franchises, and is determined to live up to the hype. “I know that the expectations are very high. I try not to overdo things and keep it as simple as possible,” he said. “It’s cricket and you never know when you are going to have a bad patch but once I get a start in a particular series, I try and maintain it as much as possible. You have to try and be consistent and score as many runs as you can.”While Gayle recovers from his injury, he will still be involved with Dolphins the camp. Interim coach Lance Klusener, who called him a “legend”, said Gayle would play an important role in mentoring some of the young players in the squad. Gayle has played in 20-over leagues across the globe, having participated in Australia’s Big Bash, Zimbabwe’s Stanbic T20 and the BPL in just the last three months. After the tournament in South Africa, he will play in the IPL. It’s this vast experience that the Dolphins hope to gain from and Gayle seems more than willing to share. “I try and deal with the mental aspect of my game first of all, make sure that I am very strong upstairs and ready for the challenges,” Gayle said. One of the people who may be most interested in Gayle’s tales is not a member of the Dolphin squad at all. Richard Levi, who shares the record with Gayle for the highest individual Twenty20 international score and broke his record for the most sixes in an innings on Sunday, plays for rival franchise, the Cobras.Gayle heard the news of Levi’s innings on his arrival in South Africa and announced his thoughts on Twitter. He was full of kind words for Levi even days after. “Hopefully he can go from strength to strength, and do bigger and better innings in the future. He will have a lot on his shoulders now,” Gayle said. “I’ve been there, you might score a lot of runs on the international scene as a youngster but there is a lot of technology involved now and it’s going to get harder.”So you have got to learn how to manipulate bowlers. They are working you out, so you have to try and be a step ahead of them.” Levi, who returns home after Wednesday’s Twenty20 against New Zealand, will have the opportunity to meet Gayle on February 26, when the Cobras play the Dolphins in Paarl.

Resurgent Sri Lanka seal thumping win

Sri Lanka excelled with the ball and in the field to cut down Australia’s batting early at the SCG

The Report by Daniel Brettig at the SCG17-Feb-2012

A rejuvenated Sri Lanka excelled with the ball and in the field to cut down Australia’s batting and then raced impudently to their rain-reduced target for an eight-wicket victory and a bonus point in a lopsided encounter at the SCG.Despite the best efforts of David Hussey, the hosts were rumbled out for 158, their lowest at the ground since 1997 and fourth-lowest in all ODIs in Sydney, in a match reduced to 41 overs-per-side by a two-hour rain delay that took place when Australia were a punch-drunk 6 for 88. Tillakaratne Dilshan and the captain Mahela Jayawardene then removed all doubt about the contest with a stand of 74 inside 12 overs.Jayawardene was still there when the winning runs were collected with 16.5 overs to spare, surprising a crowd of 22,365 and pushing Sri Lanka back into finals contention with seven points after four matches. India lead the table on 10, while a suddenly wobbly Australia have nine.It was an unhappy return to captaincy for Ricky Ponting, who could rouse neither himself from an ODI batting slumber nor his team from the flat patch they have slipped into following a successful Test summer. Ponting is likely to still have the job on Sunday against India at the Gabba as Michael Clarke struggles to recover from a hamstring strain. The hosts’ batting was inattentive and wasteful in the afternoon, and there was precious little spark with the ball or in the field, thus maintaining the unsettling form line begun in Adelaide on Sunday.Farveez Maharoof bowled intelligently for the visitors on his recall to the team, while Lasith Malinga struck a key early blow by defeating David Warner with a slower ball. Thisara Perera engineered two run-outs and claimed two wickets at the bowling crease, and Angelo Mathews maintained his strong form in this series by accounting for Michael Hussey.David Hussey was left to salvage something from the innings, though he was fortunate to survive a dropped chance from Malinga at third man when on eight. After the rain cleared he went on to a meritorious 58, maintaining his strongest summer yet for Australia. His efforts ensured some kind of chase for Sri Lanka, a prospect that looked grim at 8 for 104.Given a chance to add a sixth win from their last eight matches at the ground, Dilshan and Jayawardene wasted little time setting about the target. Jayawardene pinged a perfect off-drive in Mitchell Starc’s first over, and Dilshan added a flatly-pulled six in the left-armer’s second.Brett Lee’s return to the team after a broken toe was rushed, and Dilshan made him pay for it by cracking a hat-trick of boundaries through the leg side as the bowler dropped short. Dilshan edged Clint McKay to slip when still five short of his half century, but by that point nearly half the target had been swallowed up in quick time and the rest of the runs – including Kumar Sangakkara’s 10,000th in ODIs – were collected without fuss.Ponting was happy to bat first on what looked a pitch for batting, but soon the clouds had closed in on both the ground and the Australian batsmen. Warner struck a pair of crisp boundaries but struggled to read Malinga’s changes of pace, and ultimately lobbed a catch to mid-on when trying to get down the pitch.Maharoof took note of Malinga’s craftiness, and used a similar ruse to account for Ponting. Nicely disguised, a slower ball had Ponting too far into the stroke to avoid pushing back a simple return catch, and departing for another slim score this series.Matthew Wade’s demise occurred after Perera swooped from short cover to turn a possible single into a horrid run-out, the wicketkeeper and Peter Forrest both at the same end before Wade elected to sacrifice his wicket. Sri Lanka’s alertness in the field had been apparent, it was justly rewarded here.Michael Hussey struck one six from Mathews but next ball he fenced at a delivery too close to his body for the shot and edged behind. Forrest fiddled at Maharoof’s exemplary length and line to offer a catch to slip, and Christian shuffled across to be lbw to Perera. The rain then arrived, leaving Australia in a parlous position. Two hours of showers swept across the ground, reducing the allotted number of overs. The hosts had only 15 to bat when they resumed, and soon lost another two wickets. McKay was fooled by Rangana Herath’s straight ball, then Lee was the victim of another Perera swoop, this time for a direct hit from wide mid-off.David Hussey was in dire need of any kind of support, and for 49 runs he received it from Starc. Hussey cracked boundaries through point, midwicket and down the ground, but on 33 was again reprieved, this time when Mathews shelled a difficult chance at short cover. Perera ultimately claimed Hussey, and Starc was run out to complete a most unsatisfactory innings for the hosts. Things would only get worse as day gave way to night.

Barbados humble Sussex to march into semi-finals

A round-up of matches from the Caribbean T20 on January 18

Tino Best was Man of the Match in Barbados’ win against Sussex•Randy Brooks/West Indies Cricket Board

Barbados crushed Sussex by eight wickets at the Kensington Oval and climbed to the top of the table in Group B. Sussex, who needed a win to keep their prospects alive, disappointed by shuddering to 89 all out in 18 overs. The Barbados bowlers continued their fine form by bowling out the opposition for less than 100 runs for third successive time.Sussex had a sedate, but solid start where they got to 23 runs in four overs without losing any wicket. But Tino Best sparked the slump by removing Joe Gatting and Sussex struggled through the rest of the innings, with only three batsmen getting to double figures. Fidel Edwards, playing his first game, picked up three wickets in his last 7 balls after Best (3 for 11) and Ashley Nurse (2 for 8) had annihilated the top order. In reply, Barbados cantered to their target without any trouble. Opener Kevin Stoute and No. 4 Shane Dowrich shared an unbeaten 52-run stand, which took Barbados straight into the semi-finals.In another Group B encounter, also played at the Kensington Oval, Netherlands beat Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) by 26 runs to keep the competition hot for the second semi-finalist spot. Batting first, the Dutch openers, Stephanus Myburgh and Michael Swart, added 70 runs in eight overs. Swart scored 57 off 43 balls and was supported well by Alexei Kervezee (36 off 31) to set up a challenging target for CCC. Later, the Dutch bowled with discipline to deny any momentum to the batsmen. Both teams need to win their last league games to challenge Jamaica for the other semi-final spot available in the group.
