Kings XI go down with a bang

On the last day of Adam Gilchrist’s IPL career, another veteran, Azhar Mahmood, scored 80 off 44 balls to give Kings XI Punjab a consolation win against Mumbai Indians

On the last day of Adam Gilchrist’s IPL career, another veteran, Azhar Mahmood, scored 80 off 44 balls to give Kings XI Punjab a consolation win over Mumbai Indians. Gilchrist, though, had the last word on the night. When Mumbai needed 51 off the last over, Gilchrist asked Praveen Kumar to keep wicket, and bowled offbreaks. Offbreak, to be more precise, because Harbhajan – the last man because Dhawal Kulkarni wasn’t batting – lofted the first ball he bowled to long-on. Cue laughter, celebration, joy, and from Gilchrist an improvised version of Harbhajan’s version of Gangnam-style. He also mimicked Kieron Pollard’s celebration. The match held absolutely no bearing on the rest of the tournament. Mumbai had already qualified in the top two, and Kings XI had already been knocked out. Mumbai now go to Delhi to play Chennai Super Kings in the first qualifier, and even if they lose it they get another shot at making it to the final.Assisting the veteran Mahmood was the Kings XI Punjab veteran, Shaun Marsh, who scores a fifty every third IPL innings. Today’s 63 off 47 was his 17th in 49 efforts. Along with Mahmood he helped Kings XI recover from the early troube of 6 for 2 in the third over. Marsh took the early lead, hitting six fours in the Powerplay, reaching 28 off 20. He dominated the strike too: Mahmood was yet to get off the mark. When Mahmood did open up, he took on the best Mumbai bowler, Lasith Malinga. A top-edged pull for six was followed by three fours, a slice past point, a drive through cover, and a glance fine of fine leg. By now 6 for 2 had become 63 for 2 in eight overs.Mumbai weren’t helped by Dhawal Kulklarni’s walking off with a back trouble. They are already struggling with injury to Sachin Tendulkar. Even Dwayne Smith hasn’t played the last two games. The fifth bowler, a combine of Kulkarni, Rohit Sharma, Kieron Pollard and Glenn Maxwell, went for 53 runs. Maxwell paid the worst price, going for 18 in the 13th over with Mahmood hitting him for six, six and four in consecutive deliveries. In the next over, both the batsmen got reprieves, dropped by IPL debutant Nathan Coulter-Nile and Harbhajan. Coulter-Nile came back to be smacked for consecutive fours by Mahmood. The century was on for Mahmood when he missed a Malinga full toss in the 18th over. Kings XI got a satisfactory 27 off the last 16 balls.Mumbai’s non-regular openers, Maxwell and Aditya Tare fell inside the first four overs. Ambati Rayudu, promoted because he generally doesn’t get to bat much, couldn’t covert his start and gloved a bouncer through to Gilchrist. A Dinesh Karthik duck later, it was down to regular Mumbai saviours, Rohit and Pollard. Piyush Chawla bowled Rohit with a quicker delivery, and Pollard fell under the pressure of rising asking rate. Mahmood signed off the night with his 200th T20 wicket when he bowled Coulter-Nile in the 19th over.

In a position every team can dream of – Wagner

This was one of New Zealand’s greatest days of Test cricket in recent times as they outplayed one of the strongest Test teams in the world from start to finish

Was this really the team bowled out for 45 two Tests ago? Was it really the team who sacked their captain in such a way that he took time away from the game? Was it really the team whose off-field exploits make as many headlines as those on it? Was this really the team whose management and executive structure do not appear to see eye-to-eye?What this was, without doubt, was one of New Zealand’s greatest days of Test cricket in recent times. This was not dominating against a lowly Zimbabwe or Bangladesh side. They outplayed one of the strongest Test teams in the world from start to finish. There was an air of disbelief from those who have followed New Zealand cricket’s recent woes.”We’re in the position that every team can dream of at the moment,” Neil Wagner said, and even that sounded like an understatement. It was Wagner who sparked New Zealand’s incredible day. In his first over, with his second and third deliveries, he removed England captain Alastair Cook and trapped Kevin Pietersen lbw first ball. England’s top order looked a little vulnerable coming into the match due to the lack of match practice and the home side made it count.Wagner had been bullish in Queenstown after roughing up England’s batsmen, including removing Pietersen, and highlighted keeping him short of runs. He said New Zealand would try to “hammer” on his confidence. He was as good as his word today and, when asked about England’s performance, did not produce a dead-bat answer.”They were under a bit of pressure and thought they might take lower-risk shots but at the end of the day, that’s the way they play,” he said. “There’s days when it doesn’t come off and days when it comes off and on those days you don’t want to be the opposition and they can hurt you badly. Other days it doesn’t come off and it was just one of those days when it didn’t work for them.”The standout feature of New Zealand’s day, of which there were many, was that the key individuals – Wagner, Bruce Martin and Hamish Rutherford – could, in slightly different circumstances, have been playing in the Ford Trophy one-day tournament rather than a Test match.Wagner was only included in the squad after impressing for the New Zealand XI in Queenstown. Initially, Mark Gillespie was tipped to be the likely option to bolster the pace resources, but Wagner’s six wickets last week tipped the balance back his way. He may still have missed the final cut, though, if Doug Bracewell had not decided to clean up his house, in the process stepping on a piece of glass. In this case, Wagner’s glass was certainly half full. However, his first three Tests had brought five wickets at 68.80 and it was already being suggested that he was another player unable to transfer dominant domestic form to the top level. One good day does not mean he has cracked it, but the relief from him was palpable. “I needed it and I was just glad to get it under the belt I guess,” he said.Wagner shared eight wickets with Martin, but the 32-year-old left-arm spinner was not a certain starter in this match just the day before. Four quicks were being seriously considered by Brendon McCullum and Mike Hesson. It’s difficult to say Martin bowled for his wickets (caught point, deep square-leg and short fine-leg) but his presence ensured England’s batsmen could not settle in against four medium-fast bowlers.Martin also made it clear before the series that he was not too interested in being a defensive bowler and “would look to take a few poles and bowl to some attacking fields” if he got his chance. McCullum, a captain out of the same aggressive mindset, supported him with men around the bat and also gave him the ball straight after lunch when logic might have suggested resuming with two seamers. When Matt Prior began to open his shoulders, McCullum did not withdraw Martin to the safety of the outfield and the following over he claimed the wicket. Then there is Rutherford, like Wagner, an Otago cricketer playing on his home ground. Of all the problem areas in the New Zealand team over recent times, the opening partnership has been one of most vexing.Rutherford did not look remotely out of place, resisting England’s attempts to disturb him with the short ball and driving more confidently than during the one-day series. His opening stand with Peter Fulton, currently worth 131, is New Zealand’s best since Mark Richardson and Stephen Fleming added 163 against England, at Trent Bridge, in 2004.A compact left-hander from the same school as McCullum, Rutherford was picked on the basis of strong domestic form but was not the most prolific option available.  There is also the likelihood that if Martin Guptill had not been injured during the one-day series, he would have been given another chance alongside Peter Fulton.  It was a day for a host of accidental heroes.

A previsibilidade ofensiva do Palmeiras

Broadcasters briefed on controversial ODI squad

Cricket Australia met with Channel Nine ahead of the ODI team’s announcement to explain why Michael Clarke and David Warner were to be rested and Michael Hussey dropped

Australia’s squad for the first two ODIs against Sri Lanka was deemed so sensitive that Cricket Australia met with the host broadcaster Channel Nine ahead of its announcement to explain why Michael Clarke, David Warner and Matthew Wade were to be rested and Michael Hussey dropped.ESPNcricinfo understands CA’s team performance manager Pat Howard sat down for two meetings with members of the Nine commentary team and the network’s director of sport Steve Crawley during the Sydney Test, in an effort to convince the broadcasters of the need for squad rotation and the introduction of younger players during the ODI phase of the summer. While CA and Nine meet frequently for discussions of the schedule and other related matters, it is believed to be exceedingly rare for a squad’s selection and the reasons for its composition to be relayed in advance, underlining the controversial nature of the team chosen. After the national selector John Inverarity unveiled the squad on the fourth and final morning of the Test, Nine was critical of the absence of Warner and the retiring Hussey in particular from the first two matches. Crawley weighed in with the following words.”From an entertainment point of view, and as a fan, I struggle to understand how those two are not in the side,” he told the . “There is no doubt we’ve got to bring in new players. I think that’s a good thing. But I don’t get leaving out Warner and Hussey. When my kids play in the yard, they’re David Warner and Michael Hussey.”Australia’s stand-in captain George Bailey subsequently made a reference to the concurrent television rights discussions as a possible reason for Nine talking down his team, eliciting a sharp rebuke from the network’s cricket executive producer – and former New South Wales allrounder – Brad McNamara.”It’s rubbish and George should stick to playing cricket and leave rights to the people who know what they’re talking about,” McNamara said. “I reckon he’s got his hands full as it is. He needs to concentrate on staying in the side. And he needs to understand where his money’s coming from.”Without the TV rights deal, George is probably working in a coal mine or flipping burgers at McDonald’s. All this talk about the death of one-day cricket, it’s not coming from us. Given we were lacking star quality, we were very happy [with the ratings].”While hardly an innovation, Australia’s rotation of players at appropriate times in an increasingly packed calendar has caused plenty of angst around the country, and in some cases among the state associations. The former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is a supporter of the policy, but has said that CA may need to explain the rationale a little more clearly in order to avoid the sort of coverage it has since received.”I think an educational process should be put in place,” Ponting said, “to let the sponsors, the people who are covering the game and the fans understand what’s actually going to happen before the day the team is announced.”Though declining to speak specifically about the meeting, a CA spokesman said the governing body maintained a healthy relationship with Nine. “The closest of families occasionally disagree,” he said. “But we and Nine enjoy a remarkable chemistry which has always transcended the black ink of some 30 years of contracts.”Crawley was not available for comment.

Gambhir's chance to stake a claim

The presence of Gautam Gambhir in the match between India A and the Australians is going to be a constant reminder of his absence from the team for the first Test

Gautam Gambhir has been caught behind or in the cordon several times in the recent past•BCCI

The presence of Gautam Gambhir in the three-day practice match between India A and the Australians is going to be a constant reminder of his absence from the team for the first Test in Chennai starting on February 22.Over the past few days, Gambhir has received several endorsements but from the Australian side. On Friday, Michael Clarke said he had expected Gambhir to be in the Test team. A few days earlier, Matthew Hayden had told an Indian newspaper that he was surprised Gambhir had been dropped. On the Indian side though, there is no astonishment; a poor run of scores for Gambhir from the start of 2011, coupled with India’s dipping results in Test cricket, has led to a situation where he must reestablish public faith in his ability. The India A coach Lalchand Rajput said before the three-day game that it would be an important match for players like Gambhir. “They won’t put pressure on themselves because they have been in this situation earlier as well … These are good players who have performed very well at that level. It’s just a matter of getting there and spending more time in the middle and utilising the opportunity. Once he spends more time, everything will fall in place. Gautam knows this.”Of the quick bowlers Australia are most likely to field in the series, Gambhir will have a chance to illustrate his return to assurance against Peter Siddle and Mitchell Starc. A solid performance against the quicks would mean much, particularly if the Indian openers have a wobbly start in the first two Tests.Rajput said it depended on Gambhir being relaxed before the game rather than wound up with the possibilities it presented. It will require a move away from old habits, particularly the similarity in his recent dismissals, caught in the cordon trying what can only be called one-day dabs and steers.”He was playing one-day games the past few days, so he had to change his game a wee bit because you look for runs,” Rajput said. “In the longer version, he knows he has been getting out in those areas and is definitely looking forward to curb those shots.” As to what Gambhir needed to do in the longer version of the game, Rajput said it came down to playing close to his body.Gambhir’s efforts may not be the sole focus of the match. India-A’s role, Rajput said, had to be larger. “It’s very important that India A puts a lot of pressure on the Australians. We have done it earlier also, when we played against England in that one-day game. At that level, it’s a matter of confidence. If you do well against them, they will have to do a wee bit of thinking. It’s also up to the players to look into that aspect and put pressure on the Australians.”When the Australians lost to Mumbai in three days in 1998, Rajput said, “That put pressure on them and forced them to think about how they should plan for the Test series. So that’s something we are looking at – to put pressure on them and make it easier for the Indian team.” The team Rajput wants India A to help is, however, lined up against an Australian team far removed from the powerful squads that travelled to India for the last 15 years. So for Gambhir, a personal recovery wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
